<p>DuPont today announced it has made two cotton acquisitions in India to enhance its product lineup and strengthen its growing business here. DuPont business Pioneer Hi-Bred has purchased the cotton seed business of Nandi Seeds, based in Mehboob Nagar, Andhra Pradesh, India, and acquired cotton germplasm from Nagarjuna Seeds, based in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India.</p>
<p>“These acquisitions will help us enter the cotton seed market here and meet the needs of Indian farmers who grow more than 9 million hectares of cotton each year – more than anywhere else in the world,” said K. V. Subbarao, country manager -- Pioneer India. “Cotton is a natural fit for Pioneer in India. It completes our high-value product and service offering to farmers and enables us to further strengthen our growing seed business here.”</p>
<p>Pioneer currently offers corn, rice, pearl millet, sunflower and mustard in the Indian market and has grown revenue 40 percent annually for the last five years to reach about $70 million in 2008.</p>
<p>“Agriculture, food and nutrition is a key growth segment for DuPont in India, and these acquisitions are part of the company’s strategy to expand its presence here,” said Balvinder S. <p>July 23, 2007, will mark the 40-year anniversary of the beginning of the Detroit riots of 1967. At the end of the five-day riots, called the worst act of civil violence since the Civil War, 43 people lay dead, over 1,100 had been injured and more than 7,000 had been arrested. Dr. Patricia Gussin, known to colleagues as Dr. Patricia Stewart, a past Detroit resident, physician and former worldwide vice president for a leading healthcare company, revisits that harrowing time in her debut novel, Shadow of Death.</p>
<p>A first-year medical student at Wayne State University in Detroit when the riots began, Gussin stated, "Anyone who lived in the Detroit area in 1967 will never forget the horror of the riots as the city burned for five days. I think everyone remembers where they were when it happened and how they felt. I remember that time vividly."</p>
<p>Through the eyes of the novel's protagonist, Laura Nelson, Gussin examines the experience of being in Detroit during a time of tremendous unrest, social upheaval and devastation in Shadow of Death (Oceanview Publishing, ISBN: 1-933515-00-7, $22.95). Shadow of Death was recently named one of three finalists for Best First Novel in the "Thriller" Awards, sponsored by International Thriller Writers.</p>
<p>While the book is not autobiographical, says Gussin, her experience of being in Detroit during that time did play a large role in shaping the narrative: "Like Laura Nelson, I was a medical student with two small children. And I did experience what Laura experiences in the book. The scariness of Detroit at the time. The ongoing curfews. The palpable hostility."</p>
<p>Shadow of Death was recently adopted by Duquesne University's Spiritan Division and used as a means of launching discussions about tough issues affecting students both at and beyond the university.</p>
<p>Dr. Judith Griggs, Duquesne University Spiritan Division of Academic Programs Director, stated that she felt Gussin's Shadow of Death would be an excellent way to get students to address tough issues and further the mission of the Spiritan Division of Academic Programs: "Ms. Gussin's Shadow of Death addresses a number of important issues -- character, social issues, race relations, consequences and choices. <p>Gussin says that writing the book was in some ways a catharsis, "When I was in med school I was too overwhelmed with just making it through the day to reflect on the horrible devastation that I'd witnessed. Shadow of Death took me back to that time, letting me relive in slow motion those four years and appreciate the social turmoil and the personal stress. In many ways, the experience shaped my consciousness. On a personal level, being there at the time allowed me to grow and learn. I also think that this tragic event shaped the very fabric of the city of Detroit. Through tragic and devastating, I think that it made Detroit a different, and even a better place."</p>

Additionally, the median home price for a single-family home reached $147,000, and the average home price rose to $196,630, both increases from last year of 6.9 and 5.2 percent, respectively. Both the median and average sales prices were all-time records for the Houston market.</p>

<p>All listing categories combined, Houston’s overall housing market in April saw increases in most categories, including total property sales, average sales price, median sales price, and overall total dollar volume on a year-over-year basis.</p>
<p>The number of available homes (active listings) at the end of April was 44,144 properties, which was a decrease of 3.8 percent versus last April and the fifth consecutive month with a year-over-year decline. The figure was an increase of approximately 550 properties from last month though, which shows there are still plenty of available homes for purchase.</p>
<p>Month-end pending sales – those listings expected to close within the next 30 days – reached 5,043, which was down 1.9 percent from last year, and signals a slightly less busy May for sales. The months inventory of single-family homes for April came in at 5.3 months. This statistic signals more of a seller’s market and also shows that demand is more than keeping up with the available supply of homes, as displayed by April reporting the 18th consecutive decline in year-over-year months inventory figures.</p>

<p>Single-family Homes Update</p>
<p>The overall median price of single-family homes reached a record for the month of April at $147,000, which was an increase of 6.9 percent compared to the prior year, and the average sales price for single-family homes was $196,630 during April, which was up 5.2 percent versus the same period last year. The median is a typical market price where half of the homes sold for more and half sold for less than that figure.</p>
<p>Houston’s current median price of $147,000, while an all-time record for the Houston market, is 32.4 percent less than the national median price, which reached $217,300 in March, according to statistics released by the National Association of REALTORS®. These data continue to show the tremendous value and lower cost of living afforded to Houstonians.</p>
<p>Additionally, total sales for single-family homes in Houston continued its streak of year-over-year increases, marking 27 consecutive months that sales have been higher than the same month of the previous year. For April 2006, single-family home sales increased by 3.3 percent to 5,721, up from last year’s 5,537. April 2006 sales decreased on a month-over-month basis, after March’s unusually early strength, and reflect the more controlled growth that has been seen in this market for the last few years.</p>
<p>HAR is now also reporting existing home statistics for the single-family home segment of the real estate market. For the month of April 2006, existing single-family home sales totaled 4,904, which was a 3.8 percent increase from April 2005. The median sales price for existing homes in the Houston area was $139,900, an increase of 7.7 percent compared to the same period last year. The average sales price for the month of $182,764 was an increase of 3.7 percent from last year’s level.</p>
<p>Townhouse/Condo Update</p>
<p>The overall median price in the townhouse/condo segment in Houston was up 7.3 percent for April, with the median sales price for the month being $118,000. The average sales price for which a townhouse or condo sold in the greater Houston area was $145,953 in April 2006, which was a scant 0.3 percent increase from the same month last year.</p>
<p>Additionally, the number of townhouses and condos that sold in April increased substantially compared to last year’s sales, with 694 units being sold last month, versus 601 properties in April 2005, or a 15.5 percent increase in year-over-year sales.</p>
