Thousands of Physical Therapists are Closing their Doors

Thousands of Physical Therapists are Closing their Doors

High insurance co-payments has led thousands of consumers who need Physical Therapy to stop their treatments. On May 18th thousands of Physical Therapists in New York State are closing their doors to go to Albany to fight for a new legislation that reduces patient co-payment obligation.

(PRWEB) March 9, 2010

Thousands of patients around the country have to discontinue their Physical Therapy treatments because they cannot afford to pay their sky-rocketing co - payments. Especially in this diffucult and uncertain financial environment insurance co-payments that exceed $40, $50 or even $60 per visit make almost impossible for people to afford two or three Physical Therapy sessions per week. Insurance companies by increasing the co-payment obligation to the patient, end up paying less to the providers and reap greater profits.

In a recent interview Dr. Dimitrios Kostopoulos, co-founder of Hands-On Care Physical Therapy stated “Despite the fact Physical Therapists are the front line providers for musculoskeletal problems, they are considered by insurance companies as "specialists" and fall under the "specialist" high co-pay schedule. Such a high co-pay schedule prohibits thousands of patients from receiving Physical Therapy services prescribed by their physicians”.
"Excessive Physical Therapy co-pays have resulted in thousands of patients with unresolved problems, forcing them to undergo expensive and invasive procedures that would have been otherwise unnecessary. This drives up the costs of healthcare", as Mark Amir President of Madison Physical Therapy emphatically states.

The New York Physical Therapy Association (http://www. nypta. org) is supporting legislation that will eliminate this burden to New Yorkers and has asked its members to join them at Lobby Day on May 18th in Albany. Understanding the impact this issue has on the care their patients receive, a group of individual Physical Therapists have created a grassroots campaign to support this legislation. "We are asking our fellow therapists to close their doors on May 18th and take their staff and their patients to Albany to support this new legislation and consumer's rights", as stated by Konstantine Rizopoulos, PT who is one of the organizers of the movement. More information about their campaign can be found at http://www. ClosingMyDoors. com (http://www. closingmydoors. com)

David Sofer PT, owner of Community Physical Therapy of Brooklyn proclaimed that “…many insurance companies pay only 5 to 10% of the total cost of physical therapy care, while the patient has to come up with the rest of 90 to 95% of the payment. That is not what insurance is supposed to be. It’s just not fair”.
Correctly applied Physical Therapy has been shown to reduce the utilization of imaging, medications, injections and surgery at significant levels. Overall Low Back pain costs are the same in this country as the costs of treating cancer. "The downstream savings that physical therapy provides are not being realized because of the significant cost burden placed on patients by insurers in their shortsighted attempts to cut costs" noted by Jeff Hathaway PT, President of Proactive Physical Therapy.

Physical Therapists are asking their patients and colleagues to join them at http://www. ClosingMyDoors. com (http://www. closingmydoors. com) and on May 18th in Albany.

Indiana Dentist Rescues the Dentally Fearful Patients with Sedation Dentistry at the Center for Implants, Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry

Indiana Dentist Rescues the Dentally Fearful Patients with Sedation Dentistry at the Center for Implants, Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry

Going to the Dentist doesn't have to be a fearful or a bad experience. Millions of people avoid going to the Dentist due to fear and anxiety. Rest assure there is a solution. Dr. Irfan (Ivan) Atcha's Sedation Dentistry Method at the Center for Implants, Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry can help as it has help the fearful regain their confidence about going to the Dentist and are smiling again!

Dyer, IN (PRWEB) February 16, 2009

Advances in Sedation Dentistry allow many procedures to be done by a advanced trained Sedation Dentist like Dr. Irfan(Ivan)Atcha at the Center of Implants, Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry www. BestIndianaDentist. com without the need for referrals to specialists. This means Dr. Atcha can provide his patients with complete treatment plans and see to your care from start to finish. Even root canals, crowns, implants, and periodontal (gum) work can be done by a advanced trained Sedation Dentst like Dr. Atcha who has received the proper training in various Sedation methods such as Oral, IV and General anesthesia.

Sedation dentistry not only creates a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for the public, it also allows Dr. Atcha to accomplish more dentistry in a single visit - meaning his patients have to return fewer times to complete their treatment and regain their oral health back.

Whether our patients require a single filling or are looking to have their entire smile restored, sedation dentistry can help patients achieve optimum dental health in the most comfortable way possible.

However there are cold hard facts patients must know about Sedation Dentistry and Sedation Dentists says Dr. Atcha:

What is Sedation Dentistry? It has become very popular for dental practices to market the terms sedation and sleep dentistry. Sedation or sleep dentistry have different meanings to dentists and patients.

Most patients do not know that there are different levels of training that dentists are legally required to obtain in order to provide basic to advanced levels of sedation and anesthesia. Dentists can provide oral sedation (pills), conscious sedation (intravenous medications), or general anesthesia (true sleep) provided they are properly trained and licensed.

Only a few select dentists like Dr. Atcha in this country are advanced trained and licensed to provide complete anesthesia. "Our patients will not respond or recall even the most noxious procedures". "There are different types of sedation methods that pateints should be aware of," says Atcha as there is so much hype about dentist jumping on the Sedation Dentistry band wagon and advertise themselves as sedation dentists.

Most dentists that only provide oral sedation, advertise sedation with just a single pill. These oral medications are only effective in individuals that are mildly anxious. Very anxious or phobic patients never achieve their desired level of comfort. Oral sedation can actually make an anxious patient more uncooperative. "Contrary to advertised claims, patients are not asleep with oral sedation", Says Atcha " For a patient to be asleep with oral sedation, they must be overdosed! This places them at risk, especially since only minimal patient monitoring is present or utilized in offices that advertise oral sedation." A dentist need only attend a weekend course to be able to provide oral sedation in their practice.

A few dentists are trained to provide IV, or intravenous sedation for their patients. IV sedation can provide a much better patient experience because medications are administered directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous line. Despite claims that a patient will be asleep, they are legally required to remain conscious. Patients must realize that they will be relaxed but not asleep. Dentists are only required to complete 60 hours of training, pass a test, and pass an on site inspection to receive a permit.

General anesthesia is the only anesthetic state where the patient can be considered completely sleep. Throughout the nation, only a very small number of dentists have residency training, knowledge, and a license to provide patients with general anesthesia like Dr. Atcha at his Center for Implants, Sedation and Cosmetic Dentistry. Medications can be administered intravenously or through gases inhalational agents. Patients are asleep, amnesic and stress free during procedures. Imagine having a root canal and the patient never feel, hear or remember anything! "Dentists must complete a residency in anesthesiology and pass periodic on site inspections to receive a permit to administer general anesthesia". Says Atcha.

Above all else, patients safety comes first as Dr. Atcha and his anesthesia assistant are properly trained in administration of anesthesia and monitoring of the patient from start to finish. Oral Sedation, IV Sedation and General anesthesia can be performed in their licensed surgical/sedation center in Dyer IN as they are the only surgical/sedation center in the area that provides all the services under one roof. "No multiple providers are needed for our patients to incur extra cost to our patients" says Dr. Atcha who performs the anesthesia and also the dental procedures on the patients himself!

Now is the time to take advantage of the many benefits of sedation dentistry. Patients can have all their dental work in fewer visits and the visits can be very comfortable. Best of all patients will have no memory of the visits. Dr. Irfan (Ivan) Atcha, a sedation-trained advanced dentist, (ACLS certified) that can deliver the care and attention his patients deserve - and the smile his patients have always dreamed of. International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) Announces Physician Training Program

International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) Announces Physician Training Program

International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), in partnership with Turn the Corner Foundation (TTC), launch a new physicians training program intended to decrease the incidence of chronic Lyme disease. Lyme is a complex disease without accurate diagnostic testing solutions. Advanced clinical expertise is often required by physicians to ensure patients receive effective diagnosis and treatment programs. This program is intended to increase patients' access to care for Lyme treatment by increasing the number of physicians trained to treat both early and late-stage cases of Lyme disease.

Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) September 30, 2008

The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) today officially launched a physicians training program with the goal of decreasing incidence of chronic Lyme disease. The training program intends to train more than one hundred physicians over the next five years. The program has been underwritten by a grant from New-York-based Turn the Corner Foundation Turn the Corner, an organization dedicated to the support of research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.

"With more than an estimated 200,000 of cases annually, Lyme disease has become the leading epidemic of our time," said Dr. Daniel Cameron, ILADS board president and internal medicine physician. "We need more physician-scientists who will be the future leaders in the treatment of Lyme and associated diseases."

Increasing the number of physicians educated on the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease is a key goal in the fight against chronic Lyme disease because advanced cases of Lyme are often the result of misdiagnosis or under treatment soon after a tick bite. Recently discredited treatment guidelines authored by the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) reflect a narrow view of Lyme disease, making it difficult for physicians not well versed on the complexities of the disease to recognize symptoms and provide adequate treatment. There are no accurate diagnostic medical tests for Lyme disease.

The ILADS/TTC Physician Training Program represents the second phase of ILADS campaign to prevent chronic Lyme disease. The campaign, launched this summer with the release of a guide for consumers and health professionals ILADS Top 10 Tips for Preventing Chronic Lyme Disease (http://www. ilads. org/files/2008/Preventing_CLD_Top_Ten_Tips. pdf), intends to raise awareness of the risks associated with the disease, provide prevention guidance to consumers and training for medical personnel.

Evidence-based Medical Training:
ILADS Physicians Training Program is designed to enhance clinical expertise for physicians with established medical practices. Curriculum is based on ILADS' evidence-based treatment guidelines and focuses on the importance of hands-on experience complemented by thorough review of quality, peer-reviewed literature. During the one-two week program, participants partner with a designated ILADS Lyme literate physician and participate in the diagnosis and care of a variety of challenging early and chronic cases.

A pilot version of the program was launched in 2004. To-date, approximately 100 physicians representing a variety of geographies in the United States have successfully completed the program.

"Effective treatment of Lyme disease requires a comprehensive approach to patient health care," said Maureen McShane M. D, a family practitioner in Chazy, New York. "ILADS' physician training program was invaluable for teaching me how to better assess, diagnose and treat Lyme disease and possible co-infections."

Applications for the training program can be obtained via email lymedocs @ aol. com.

Large Crowd Expected at 2008 Conference:
ILADS 2008 ninth annual conference is scheduled for October 18 and 19, 2008 at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco. Several hundred medical professionals representing a myriad of specialty areas are expected to attend. Entomologist Willy Burgdorfer (http://www. lyme. org/ldf/burgdorfer. html), who is credited with discovering the bacteria pathogen that causes Lyme disease, will be keynoting the conference.

The conference is intended to foster dialogue and collaboration among researchers and medical professionals who work with Lyme disease patients in various settings. The program will focus on providing updates in clinical understanding and treatment techniques. Attendees eligible for continued medical education (CME) credit can earn 9.5 credits.

ILADS conference program (http://www. ilads. org/files/2008_meeting/Program. pdf) and continued medical education credit information is available on the ILADS website.

About ILADS:
ILADS www. ilads. org is a nonprofit, international, multidisciplinary medical society, dedicated to the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of Lyme and its associated diseases. ILADS promotes understanding of tick-borne diseases through research and education and strongly supports physicians and other health care professionals dedicated to advancing the standard of care for Lyme and its associated diseases.

About Turn the Corner Foundation:
Turn the Corner Foundation www. turnthecorner. org is a not-for-profit public charity founded in 2002 by Staci and Rich Grodin, with headquarters in New York City. "Economy Class Syndrome" - a New Concern for Air Travelers

"Economy Class Syndrome" - a New Concern for Air Travelers

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) creates concern by even the most athletic air travelers.

Asheboro, NC (PRWEB) February 18, 2007

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is believed to be caused by sitting in unnatural, or cramped positions, such as in the "economy-class" seats on flights for long periods of time. Blood clots can form in the calves of about 5% of air travelers, but those with lower heart rates are prone to the more serious Deep Vein Thrombosis. The profile of DVT, or "Economy Class Syndrome" has been raised recently in a number of widely reported health issues among long-flight airline passengers. The clots are dangerous when they block blood vessels in the leg, or worse, in the lungs. This injury can often feel like a muscle cramp and is usually misdiagnosed, which worsens the injury and increases the risk of DVT. The English soccer team actually broke their trip into two segments when flying to the World Cup in Japan - taking a two-day rest stop and wearing compression stockings during the flights.

Almost 85% of air travelers that experience DVT are athletic. People with lower resting heart rates are considered to have greater risk of stagnant, statis blood, which is subject to clotting. Runners and endurance-type athletes are actually more likely to have sore muscles and bruising that can trigger clotting. 82% of passengers that experience DVT are actually under the age of 60.

In recent years, many airlines have begun distributing information making passengers aware of the risks of DVT over long flights. However, further measures can be taken to assure that those who spend much of their time on planes can prevent the effects of DVT.

Some suggestions for frequent travelers include:

Wear graduated support compression stockings to encourage circulation (Don't confuse compression stockings with support stockings. "Regular" Support stockings can actually be harmful). Passengers should flex their legs at fifteen-minute intervals during their trip. A helpful 5 minute airline stretch has been developed and be downloaded at our site: http://www. economyclasssyndrome. net (http://www. economyclasssyndrome. net) or http://www. ameswalker. com (http://www. ameswalker. com) If other risk factors---such as a personal or family history of clots---are present, more frequent flexing and compression stockings are strongly advised. Avoid sleeping on the flight if possible. Drink lots of water, and exercise by walking up and down the aisle during the flight.

Another Oprah American Success Story

Another Oprah American Success Story

In her years as the “Queen of Talk TV” Oprah Winfrey has sparked many a success story. From helping to launch the careers of little known writers to transforming little known products into household names. Indeed the power of Oprah has launched many an entrepreneurial ship, but perhaps no cruise on the good ship Oprah has been as wild a ride as that of Wayne Perry. Thanks to an appearance on Oprah’s top rated show, Perry accidentally discovered a natural herbal remedy that is gaining a stellar reputation as an important medical breakthrough for relieving chronic headaches and sinus conditions.

Albany, NY (PRWEB) February 21, 2005

During the mid 1990s, Wayne Perry was a nationally recognized self defense instructor who had a unique claim to fame. When graduates of Perry’s “street style” self defense workshops (mostly women), went back to their daily lives, Perry and his hidden camera crew would attack the ex-students as a final exam of sorts.

“Once the students finished the workshop, they could elect to have us attack them with hidden cameras. Of course we charged extra for that service, but it was popular. Of course we wouldn’t quite attack them all the way. It was more like a semi-violent game. The object would be for the attacker to surprise the student and literally attempt to drag them away to a car or behind a building and if the student could fight back enough to make the attacker let go, they'd win. Then we'd have it all on camera so everyone could learn from it. Whenever these people used the tactics I taught them to hurt one of us, I felt happy even though they were beating the hell out of us at the time," jokes Perry.

As word of PerryÂ’s wild self defense workshops grew, he became a regular guest on many talks shows including "Maury Povich", "Montel Williams" and others. Then one day Perry received a call from a producer working with the Oprah Winfrey Show. The caller asked Wayne if he was the guy who attacked his students with hidden cameras.

Within a week, Perry was flown to Los Angeles where he was contracted to teach a 4-hour self defense workshop to a group of ordinary people from various walks of life. The one thing all these people had in common was the fact that each had been victimized by violent crime on some way. Once the workshop was over, Perry and the Oprah camera crew went on the hunt for their victims, and within a 3 week period each student had been attacked for all of OprahÂ’s viewers to see.

“I credit Oprah with the fact that we could even do the attacks on television. After the first attack, the lawyers for the show reviewed the footage and tried to call the whole thing off because of liabilities. Everyone had volunteered and signed waivers, but the lawyers got nervous when they saw it on tape. Then at the last minute I got word from the producers that Oprah had pushed for the show and so it continued thanks to her, and believe me she was taking a hell of a chance by backing us up. But it turned out great and Oprah ended up making an entire episode about the whole thing. It was awesome, says Perry.

In fact that episode of Oprah‘s show was one of the most repeated episodes ever with dramatic clips popping up on nearly every Oprah special even years later.

During the next year, Perry would return as an Oprah guest three more times. It was during one of these appearances that Perry taught Oprah how to use a self defense pepper spray to ward off attackers. Perry had allowed Oprah to spray him with a water filled spray canister as he attempted to grab her. The goal was to see if Oprah could hit Perry’s face with the spray before he could actually grab her. Within seconds, Oprah had soaked Perry with the fake spray and “Pepper Spray” became a household name.

During that episode, Oprah announced that Wayne had been sprayed with "real" pepper spray more than 30 times for live demonstrations. After that appearance, Perry was deluged with requests for pepper spray demonstrations, and in hopes of capitalizing on his new found fame, Perry booked himself across the country as the human guinea pig for defensive pepper spray. By 1998, Perry had been sprayed by dozens of pepper spray brands in every concentration -- an incredible 68 times in all.

Even as thousands of people bought his self defense videos, and attended his workshops, Perry lived with a secret that made his life a living hell. OprahÂ’s self defense guru had suffered from chronic headaches for more than 20 years. Similar in pain to a migraine, Perry was diagnosed with Cluster headaches and chronic Sinusitis. The headaches were so bad at times that Perry had even contemplated suicide on several occasions when the headache attacks became unbearable. For years, he had seen various doctors, and was prescribed numerous medicines(from steroid nasal sprays to antidepressants), but nothing ever completely controlled his headaches.

As Perry toured the country and the talk show circuit, he had been lucky enough to avoid getting headaches during his appearances since most of his workshops were held during the day, and his headaches mainly came at night. Then during a demonstration for a local newscast, Perry was overtaken by one of his headaches just moments before conducting a live pepper spray demonstration in front of the news cameras.

As the headache grew, Perry smiled as if nothing was wrong while the news reporter filled the audience in on what was about to happen. Then the reporter turned and gave Wayne the cue to move in for the attack. The reporter fired a blinding spray of hot pepper extract directly into PerryÂ’s face instantly sending him to his knees, but much to his surprise, Wayne immediately noticed his headache was gone.

“I couldn’t believe it. I had been on every medicine you can think of and the pepper was the only thing that ever worked that strongly. I had a full blown attack and nothing could ever turn them back, but that pepper spray did it immediately. This was no placebo effect and I knew the secret was the pepper extract and the fact that it went up my nose. I knew I had discovered something important that day and I credit Oprah Winfrey with the whole thing. If it wasn’t for her announcing to the world that I was willing to be pepper sprayed, I’d probably still be suffering from the headaches. It changed my life forever,” explains Perry.

“Changed his life” is an understatement for sure. After Perry’s pepper discovery, he spent several years creating the world’s first hot pepper nasal spray known as “Sinus Buster”. This natural spray became an instant success – not just monetarily speaking, but also in medical circles. It turned out that Perry’s formula was effective on nearly all headaches including Migraines, Menstrual, Sinus and Hangovers. Furthermore, this hot herbal concoction also quickly became recognized as a breakthrough in relieving chronic sinus and allergy conditions including “Anosmia,” the loss of the sense of smell. Many people credit Sinus Buster with reviving their senses of smell – something that modern medicine had believed was impossible until they witnessed the effects of Perry's hot pepper nasal spray.

In 2003, Perry created SiCap Industries, a company specializing in hot pepper based health products. To date, the company has done nearly 1 million dollars in sales, and Sinus Buster is being recommended by doctors around the world. In fact the reach of Sinus Buster has been so powerful itÂ’s sparked the interest of some major players in the clinical trial business.

In February, Sinus Buster was initiated into a Phase 1 clinical trial in Finland and the UK. The trials are focusing on the sinus and headache relieving abilities of Sinus Buster, but the researchers are also studying the formulaÂ’s effect on weight loss. It turns out PerryÂ’s formula may also help suppress the appetite and boost metabolic activity leading to natural weight loss and overall weight control. If these findings prove true, Sinus Buster could be on itsÂ’ way to becoming a billion dollar product.

Since Perry’s formula is so complex, most researchers admit it cannot be replicated “exactly” due to the fact that SiCap uses several different pepper extracts mixed together to create what the company refers to as a “trade secret”. So far the Sinus Buster formula has been studied by several well regarded chemists who say the amounts of active ingredients are miniscule that the exact formula can only be copied by mere accident – the same way Perry discovered it so long ago.

“It took me several years of experiments and lots of trial and error until I got it right. Now we operate like Coca Cola. If they patented their original formula, everybody would be making Coke Classic today because the patent would have run out after their first 20 years in business. And believe it or not, Sinus Buster is kind of like Coke because many people use it just to wake up in the morning or because they like the blast they get from it. It’s an acquired taste that cannot be perfectly copied, and we’ve just recently started making our own extracts using a combination of mushrooms and peppers. This special extract will be added to our latest maximum strength Sinus Buster formula due out this year and it’s going to blow the lid off the sinus, allergy and headache markets. The key is incorporating the medicinal properties of mushrooms with the medicinal properties of hot peppers. And just think all this is thanks to Oprah Winfrey. Now that I look back, I see how she really did guide me and how life seems to really turn out like one big plan,” Perry exclaims.

As far as getting back on Oprah to tell his story, Perry is hopeful but guarded. He believes his time will come again since his story is truly one that deserves to be told.

"We've heard from customers who actually contacted the Oprah Show to see if we were legit. As far as I've heard, Oprah's people consistently back us up. I'm not sure if I'll ever be back on the show, but if they do something on natural remedies or former Oprah guests who've found success...I'm sure I'll be included. If not, I thank Oprah anyway for all her help," adds Perry.
