Blood that remains in your baby’s umbilical cord after it has been cut is called “cord blood” and it is rich in newborn stem cells. These stem cells are one of the most promising sources of biological material for the treatment of a number of serious illnesses including heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Because they are the body’s “master” cells and regenerate into the cells that form all other tissues, organs and systems in the body, stem cells have a natural, regenerative power to heal and are currently being used to treat, or cure, over 75 life-threatening illnesses, including leukemia, blood disorders, and cancers.
Dr. B. After the baby is born and the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, the cord blood is collected by using either a syringe or blood bag. “The procedure is safe, painless and only takes a few minutes”, explains Dr. Kashanchi. The cord is stored and easily available if it is ever needed. These stem cells will be a perfect match for the child, while there is only a 25% chance that a sibling will be a match.
When stem cells are collected from the mother’s connection to the baby -- the umbilical cord -- the mother has helped her baby after the birth with her own blood.
