Local Non-profit offers Solution for Proposed Cuts in ADAP Funding

Local Non-profit offers Solution for Proposed Cuts in ADAP Funding

The increasing cost of prescription medication and proposed reduction in funding has forced many living with chronic illness to seek additional help.

(PRWEB) February 1, 2003

HOUSTON (January 28, 2003) – If passed, it promises to be one of the hardest blows yet to Texas healthcare reform. In an effort to lower budget deficits, this year 13 state Aids Drug Assistance Programs (ADAPs), including Texas, are expected to limit access to HIV medications for thousands of uninsured and underinsured individuals. If passed, 2,500 Texans currently enrolled in ADAP will be removed from the program and denied funding for medication. The plan also includes proposed income level reductions, which would cut annual qualification levels by more than 50 percent – from $27,000/year to $12,404/year. The increasing cost of prescription medication and proposed reduction in funding has forced many living with chronic illness to seek additional help.

Non-profit organizations such as the Houston Buyers Club (HBC) offer free educational seminars and discounted supplements for individuals living with HIV, Hepatitis C and other chronic illnesses. HBC provides a variety of supplements that stimulate, support and act to protect the bodyÂ’s immune system, and inhibit viral activity. Physicians refer patients to HBC for supplements that help safely and effectively manage chronic side effects.

NAMI San Diego's 2007 Annual Walk a Success, 2008 Walk Already Slated -- Get Ready Now

NAMI San Diego's 2007 Annual Walk a Success, 2008 Walk Already Slated -- Get Ready Now

The 2007 San Diego County NAMI WALK raised $120,000 which will go towards increasing awareness about our country's need for a world-class treatment and recovery system for people with mental illnesses. The 2008 San Diego County NAMI WALK will be April 19 in Balboa Park. Donations are being accepted and walk teams are already being formed.

San Siego, CA (PRWEB) September 14, 2007

The date was April 21, 2007. The place, Balboa Park. A total of 1,200 people, committed to eradicating the stigma of mental illness, showed up with their walking shoes and hit the street for San Diego's National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Campaign for the Mind of America.

The walk was a success. It raised $120,000 and consisted of more than 60 walking teams. The money will go to increase awareness about our country's need for a world-class treatment and recovery system for people with mental illnesses. It will also go to fund local NAMI programs that help those with mental illness and their families and friends to understand this disease with compassion and hope.

To put it in perspective, more than 244,000 people are living with mental illness in San Diego alone. In the state of California, 600,000 children, adults and elderly are in need of mental health services that aren't readily available. In our nation, one in five people will suffer from a serious mental illness in their lifetime. Truly staggering statistics in a country flush with state-of-the-art medical treatment. Oftentimes, that treatment is just out of reach for those with mental illness for reasons of stigma, availability and insurance policies.

NAMI San Diego is looking forward, however. Looking to a future where all those who have mental illness can be readily treated and cared for both medically and by the attitudes of society as a whole. Part of that forward-looking stance includes getting ready for the next walk on April 19, in Balboa Park at 6th and Quince streets. Donations are being accepted and walk teams are already being formed.

Get involved early! For more information, go to www. namiwalksandiego. org or call (619) 584-5564

TheCPAPPeople. com was launched last month in an effort to provide affordable products and services to sleep apnea patients who want choices and availability while maintaining privacy, convenience, and reliability. The website contains educational resources, advanced sorting and searching features, and a quick checkout process. The focus of the company and the website is patient compliance with CPAP therapy.

CPAP Connections Inc. has established valued relationships with the global leaders in continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The company is proud to be an authorized reseller for Philip Respironics, a unit of Royal Philips Electronics, ResMed Inc., New Zealand-based Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Corporation Limited, and DeVilbiss Healthcare Inc.

The board of directors of CPAP Connections Inc. consists of five individuals with experience in e-commerce, CPAP therapy and sales, banking, and the healthcare industry. In addition to the board, CPAP Connections Inc. has established an advisory panel made up from industry leaders and experienced business professionals in the Richmond, VA area. The company is a member of the Virginia Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Sleep Apnea Association, and the Chesterfield County Chamber of Commerce. The company is also certified by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.

In this time of healthcare debate and insurance questions, CPAP Connections has stepped up to provide services and products that do not require insurance at prices that are lower than most deductibles. The company offers products that generally cost less than brick-and-mortar suppliers and it provides more selection. Patients can rest assured that the value of the service provided is on-par with a local supplier and support is always available via email, live chat, or telephone. Says Tim Tillman, Chief Information Officer, “We may be an Internet provider, but we believe we can offer the same or better level of service as a patient’s local supplier. We know these products and we have the resources available to answer any question.”

Chief Executive Officer Bryan Carlson says, “We are very excited to be a part of this community. Our focus is customer satisfaction and compliance and we hope to be a valued service for sleep apnea patients across the country and in our own backyard.”

Approximately one in five U. S. adults suffers from some form of sleep apnea, and it is believed that 85% of those are undiagnosed. There is growing scientific evidence of the relationship between sleep apnea and other co-morbidities such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Sleep apnea has no major demographic and can affect anyone in any age group and in any physical condition.

CBS Show "The Doctors" Reveals New Golf Ball Massage Tool

CBS Show "The Doctors" Reveals New Golf Ball Massage Tool

CBS’s The Doctors just ran a segment on Golf Ball Massage specialist Heather Karr (a licensed massage therapist) and her new invention for giving the ultimate golf ball massage.

Moorpark, CA (PRWEB) December 2, 2010

Why use a “golf ball” for massage? Amazingly, a golf ball is the perfect size and shape object to exert the pressure needed to release muscle tension due to stress and over-activity. CBS’s The Doctors just ran a segment on Golf Ball Massage specialist Heather Karr (a licensed massage therapist) and her new invention for giving the ultimate golf ball massage.

Using a golf ball alone to deeply massage will quickly ruin a therapist’s hands. The golf ball massage was such an essential part of Heather’s massage business (ahhhmmm Massage Therapy in Thousand Oaks, California), she filed patents on a tool that allows the golf ball to roll freely on the body under pressure, yet does not exclude the relaxing effect of the human touch.

Heather’s unique jewel-like invention, the SPAball Kaddy, is molded out of a super-strong crystal-clear polymer. Its ergonomic design fits easily into your palm and provides precise control of the golf ball. Best of all, it lets you apply the required pressure while eliminating stress to your hands. Professional therapists like Dorothy Twitchell comment − “Simply amazing. This is more than just a tool, it’s a modality that adds another dimension to my massage treatments. The SPAball Kaddy allows me to work deeper on my clients without any stress to my hands (especially thumbs).” Rebecca Canaan, a licensed massage therapist adds − “Wow! All I can say is that it was one of the best massages I’ve ever had. Heather used her golf ball massage technique with the SPAball Kaddy and my muscles are tingling with fresh oxygenated blood healing them. The cross-fiber work was exactly what I was looking for.”

Although it was designed for professional therapists, the SPAball Kaddy can be an effective tool in anyone’s hands. Now you can put muscle health back in your own control. The SPAball Kaddy is easy to take anywhere and use any time. Serious weekend athletes will find a golf ball massage a pre - and post-game necessity.

Heather’s SPAball Kaddy is simply the latest addition to her growing line of golf ball massage products. She introduced her KaddyBACK™ a few months ago that positions a golf ball on your back, while you are sitting or learning against a wall hands-free. To view these great products go to http://www. golfballmassage. com for instructional videos and more product information. A percentage of the profits from the golf massage products will go to help build the House of Hope (http://www. ourhouseofhope. org), a loving end-of-life care home for people in the Ventura County and Northwestern Los Angeles County.

For more information please contact: Heather Karr at 26500 W. Agoura Road, Suite 102-668, Calabasas, CA 91302. Phone 805-857-5693. Fax 818-474-7465. Email: heather(at)golfballmassage(dot)com. Website http://www. golfballmassage. com/.

Survival Books Enter the Electronic Age

Survival Books Enter the Electronic Age

Survival knowledge is best stored in your head; if real trouble strikes there is rarely time to sit down and read a survival book; even if you have the presence of mind to read one in such a scenario! 21st Century View Ltd publishing took this view and opted for the electronic format for their latest book by author James Mandeville.

(PRWEB) October 19, 2005

Ex-army survival expert and author James Mandeville’s new book, “No Water? No Food?” (Finding water and food anywhere in the world.) ISBN 1-905337-00-0. First edition 01-04-05), is being made available by the publishers, 21st Century View Ltd., as a download and on CD from their website www. burn-a-book. com

A spokesperson for the publishers said the company took this approach because electronic books in their high quality e-book format allowed many full colour photographs and illustrations to be included in the publication — this would have been prohibitively expensive to produce using conventional book printing. Although we recognise that e-books have enjoyed a mixed reception from the public, our new format works just like a website, being highly illustrated, easy to navigate and read and it is being received very enthusiastically by readers.

“Survival knowledge is only useable when you carry it in your head and it does not matter if you read it in electronic book format or in a printed book.” That is the view of author James Mandeville. “No one I have ever served with in the army sat down and read a survival manual when in an actual survival situation! In such a scenario, everyone is traumatised, frightened and low on coping mechanisms. A survival manual in a rucksack or suitcase is no substitute for carrying that knowledge in your head. If you need to carry the knowledge around with you in a book you probably will not survive long enough to use it if you really get into a tough situation!

I began writing “No Water? No Food?” back in 2001 and since then the world has witnessed increasingly violent and tragic natural disasters, wars and acts of terrorism. These events have affected families, communities, regions and countries; the list goes on and on. There is much any survivor can do to help themselves in such a situation and in the extreme examples you have to be able to help yourself because help from other sources will be a long time in arriving. I wanted to share my survival knowledge with the general public and the electronic download seemed a good way to interest computer-savvy people in the book. In “No Water? No Food?” I also give equal weight to survival in the home. On the publisher’s website I have included a free article telling people how to prepare their homes and families to cope with local and regional disasters.”

21st Century View Ltd publishing is a private publishing company based in The Channel Islands. They specialize in books on health, personal survival and technical books.

SpaExec Arizona, Top Spa Executives Discuss Cutting-Edge Marketing and Retail Strategies

More than ninety spa executives met at Sanctuary on Camelback in Paradise Valley, AZ on August 8th for SpaExec's third regional meeting of 2007. The focus of the event was on marketing and retail sales in the luxury resort environment. The evening kicked off with networking and a product showcase from SpaExec's sponsors, moving onto brief presentations and round tables. Guests finished the evening at a cocktail event featuring Asian pear martinis and spa apps from celebrity chef Beau MacMillan.

Petaluma, CA (PRWEB) September 13, 2007

More than ninety spa executives met at Sanctuary on Camelback in Paradise Valley, AZ on August 8th for SpaExec's third regional meeting of 2007. The focus of the event was on marketing and retail sales in the luxury resort environment.

"The meeting was very informative and the SpaExec team is magnificent," said Vel Mathews, Director of Spa Operations at The Retreat at Seven Canyons.

"An outstanding event with quality speakers and products represented," said Jill Eisenhut, Spa Director at Willow Stream Spa at The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.

The evening kicked off with networking and a product showcase from SpaExec's sponsors, moving onto brief presentations and round tables. SpaExec sponsors Dori Soukup from Pevonia, Liz Verbruggen from Aromatherapy Associates and Erich Worster from Anakiri Bioenergetic Skin Care presented cutting edge online marketing strategies. Guests finished the evening at a cocktail event featuring Asian pear martinis and spa apps from celebrity chef Beau MacMillan.

Pevonia's Dori Soukup presentation stressed the importance of establishing key performance indicators such as breakeven point, revenue capacity, volume per guest and call to reservation ratio. From Aromatherapy Associates, Liz Verbruggen shared retail sales strategies such as maximizing the location of the retail space, avoiding cluttered displays and unclear packaging. Anakiri's Erich Worster discussed online marketing in addition to moderating a roundtable discussion focusing on the need to maintain integrity through pricing on products and how to work with vendors to accomplish consistency.

With such a highly sophisticated group of spa directors, the roundtable discussions uncovered some useful marketing and retail sales strategies. Recommendations to improve retail focused on the dependent nature of sales and marketing efforts, the importance of therapist "buy-in," and the need to work with your vendors to create convenient ways to reach to satisfy the end-customer.

Here are some highlights:

Develop Multiple Marketing Touch Points: Tell a continuous product story throughout not just the spa but entire property. From point of purchase displays and product-line supplied art to complimentary in-room gift sets at the resort that direct interest to the spa retail boutique.

Sales Begin in the Treatment Room: It is critical to educate therapists that providing clients with retail product information and recommendations is really just completing their prescription for health. As the therapist is the one most familiar with the client's body and specific needs, they should be the ones initiating the sale.

Invest in Retail Sales Associates: The retail sales associates and spa receptionists are the front line ambassadors to the spa and its retail space. They are primary elements to the success or failure of a viable sales floor and should be given ongoing product and customer service training along with a sense of ownership.

Develop on-line sales capabilities on your website. Many people will purchase the products recommended from the spa where they received a memorable treatment, even if they don't live in the area, as long as they can easily do so on-line.

Ask your Vendors to Drop-ship Specialty Items: Depending on shelf and inventory space issues, investigate product-lines that offer automatic ordering. The guest purchases in-store and the order is fulfilled and shipped by individual company immediately to their home. Saves inventory space and frees guest from having to pack larger items.

SpaExecs final event of 2007 will take place at Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach on Thursday, October 25th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. The focus of the event will be on spa industry education and career path opportunities for spa professionals. In addition to Orange County spa executives, directors and managers from luxury properties in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Palm Springs will participate in the event.

Outbreak Plan to Isolate Avian Flu

Outbreak Plan to Isolate Avian Flu

Nolan said that Thailand would be most likely place as distribution center where supplies such as Tamiflu.

(PRWEB) January 1, 2006

Richard Nolan, senior adviser to the director of the Strategic National Stockpile at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta commented that "theoretically, it ought to work". Currently, he is working on the plan, which would establish a distribution center for influenza prevention supplies.

Experts realize that Asian region is the most appropriate location for mutation to take place that is why, Nolan said that Thailand would be most likely place as distribution center where supplies such as Tamiflu - the influenza medication thought most likely to be effective against avian flu - could be quickly shipped around the region".

For avian flu to become a pandemic threat, it would have to mutate into a virus that can be transmitted from person to person. So far, humans can contract the disease only from birds.

Health Specialists are already working in Asian countries to analyzing the matters of avian flu, influenza. Nolan said those teams require quick access to supplies, mostly if they determine an avian flu that spreads among people.

"People get really up close and personal with their chickens," Nolan said.

If avian flu were determined, it could take as long as nine months to develop and manufacture a vaccine. It would be more effective to corral the virus and prevent it from spreading.

He questioned and answered as he thinks, he asked "Can you isolate it enough, given the fact that it's likely to occur in a rural village?" "Yes" as he thinks.

Nolan said that the problem right now is every country in the world worried about pandemic flu is starting to ask the single manufacturer of Tamiflu for massive quantities of it but it would require an almost immediate response, including distribution of Tamiflu in the infected population.

The "recipe" for Tamiflu is patented, and Roche, the pharmaceutical company with the rights to produce it, cannot keep up with demand.

The CDC hopes to stockpile Tamiflu regimens for the Asian distribution center, which would be operated by the World Health Organization, Nolan said.

"It's likely to not be an ideal amount," he said. "It's going to be whatever we can get our hands on."

"We are discouraging people from stockpiling," said Dr. Doug Moore, chief of public health for the health department. "We want to make sure we have it for people who do need it."

Tamiflu is available by prescription from medical providers for people are who sick with influenza. It should not be put away on a shelf in case of a future illness, Moore said.

The health department has asked area providers not to dispense the drug preventively, and especially not for the remote possibility of avian flu.

"We don't know if it's going to be effective" against avian flu or even if avian flu will become a human threat, Moore said.

Meanwhile, Moore said, it is up to the federal government to stockpile Tamiflu and other supplies for the possibility of an outbreak on American soil.

"It's at the nation level. It's not done at the local level," he said.

The CDC would probably be charged with distributing supplies around the country during an outbreak, and local agencies, such as the health department, would have little control.

Moore said supplies would be targeted to areas with confirmed disease cases. If avian flu popped up in many places at once, it would be up to federal officials to prioritize dispensation.

Aerotel and Medicronic-Vodafone Launch Innovative Wireless Homecare System in Spain

Aerotel and Medicronic-Vodafone Launch Innovative Wireless Homecare System in Spain

Medicronic Salud and Vodafone Spain use Aerotel Medical Systems' Wireless Homecare System with huge success.

Bilbao, Spain & Holon, Israel (PRWEB) April 3, 2008

Aerotel Medical Systems, one of the world's leading manufacturers of advanced telemedicine and remote monitoring solutions, announced today that Vodafone Spain in conjunction with Medicronic Salud have used Aerotel's e-CliniQ™ Wireless Home Monitoring System with successful results.

The e-CliniQ™ Wireless Home Monitoring System enables patients to keep track of their health, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Using Bluetooth technology, Aerotel's Tele-Modem™ Homecare Hub remotely monitors the patient's vital signs from various homecare sensors, transmitting the data to Medicronic's central receiving station via the Vodafone cellular network, where it is stored and analyzed by Aerotel's Medical Parameters Monitoring (MPM™) software.

The seamless technology is being used successfully by MEDICRONIC-VODAFONE SPAIN, a joint venture between Medicronic Salud and Vodaphone, to monitor, for example, patients' blood pressure and other vital signs. Easy to use, the e-CliniQ™ system is activated at the touch of a button. Blood pressure readings are encrypted and sent via a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to the receiving center where the patient or doctor can directly access the information via the internet, using Aerotel's MPM-Net™ technology. The system allows doctors to check that patients are adhering to their pharmaceutical treatments.

"Flexibility and adaptation to patient needs has been key to e-CliniQ's success," commented David Rubin, Aerotel Medical Systems President & CEO. "In the modern age of wireless telecommunications and anywhere connectivity via cellular and internet networks, there is no reason why we cannot provide our patients with full remote and non-intrusive monitoring care, saving time and money in unnecessary visits to doctors and hospitals."

Dr. José Antonio Amérigo, Medical Director of MEDICRONIC-VODAFONE SPAIN, says that new cell phone technology, allows to control and follow up of Chronic Illness patients in many different ways, giving them full mobility and using e-CliniQ's to check instantly their vital parameters no matter the time or the place they are.

In Spain where more and more old people use cell phones, it is easy for them to be connected instead of depending on a fixed place were the analogue lines exist like at home. Spain has the oldest rate of elder people at the European Union and with one of the higher number of Chronic Patients, most of them over 65 years old.

"The consistence of Aerotel´s technology," says Dr. Amérigo, "is a good example to use in Chronic Disease Management, where the patient takes their own control of the situation, supervised from a distance by a group of doctors and nurses, at the MEDICRONIC-VODAFONE Call Center."

Aerotel's innovative technology also enables patients to monitor other values such as weight, blood glucose, ECG (electrocardiogram), cholesterol, blood oxygen saturation level (SpO2) and Spirometry.

Critics Say HUD-Realtors Collaboration Hoodwinks Homebuyers

Critics Say HUD-Realtors Collaboration Hoodwinks Homebuyers

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® assisted the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for over a year to develop its recently distributed Radon Gas and Mold Notice and Release Agreement, but critics contend it was strategically written to downplay the danger of radon exposure so as not to hinder the sales process and may put the eventual occupants at risk for radon-induced lung cancer.

Alstead, NH (PRWEB) July 6, 2004

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® assisted the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for over a year to develop its recently distributed Radon Gas and Mold Notice and Release Agreement, but critics contend it was strategically written to downplay the danger of radon exposure so as not to hinder the sales process and may put the eventual occupants at risk for radon-induced lung cancer.

The form notifies potential purchasers of single-family property repossessed by the Federal Housing Administration that "radon gas and some molds have the potential to cause serious health problems," and encourages them "to obtain the services of a qualified and experience professional to conduct inspections and tests regarding radon and mold prior to closing." Starting June 28th, buyers will be required to sign the release forever discharging HUD and the Realtor from any and all claims and liabilities resulting from the presence of radon or mold on the property.

David Hill, President of the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST) finds it particularly devious that HUD and NAR chose to compare radon and mold as a similar risk. "The Notice fails to disclose that EPA strongly recommends every home purchaser, regardless of where they live, to have a radon test because radon exposure actually kills people," says Hill. "And, who's going to disclose that fact? Certainly not the Realtor! The Notice is misleading and doesnÂ’t provide the necessary information to make an informed decision before one signs the release."

According to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to radon is the nation's second leading cause of lung cancer behind cigarette smoking. The Agency's newly revised risk assessment of 21,000 annual radon-related lung cancer deaths in the U. S. is a 50% increase over its 1994 estimate.

The EPA website posts, "The World Health Association (WHO), the National Academy of Sciences and the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, as well as EPA, have classified radon as a known human carcinogen because of the wealth of biological and epidemiological evidence and data showing the connection between radon and lung cancer in humans." About mold, EPA only says, "The common health concerns from molds include hay fever-like allergic symptoms. People with asthma should avoid contact with or exposure to molds."

Dallas Jones, President of the American Radon Policy Coalition says the HUD-NAR concoction is downright Machiavellian. "Judging from HUD's sudden concern with shedding radon liability, the Department already knows there are significant radon risks associated with these properties," says Jones, "yet, the Realtors have successfully lobbied for joint liability protection with a Release Form that deliberately withholds factual information about the deadliness of radon exposure."

"Unless official documentation is provided to dispute their claims, Realtors can continue to deceive trusting purchasers with myths like 'we don't have any radon around here' or 'the whole radon issue is highly overblown' just to prevent a perceived hurdle to the sale. And, it's such a shame since radon problems, when found, are so easily and inexpensively mitigated. The cost of testing and mitigation is even eligible for financing under some federally insured mortgage programs, another fact that is conspicuously missing from the Notice."

"To make matters worse," continues Jones, "many purchasers of FHA foreclosures are investors or landlords who will either resell the property for a profit or rent it. Since they aren't going to reside in the home, the potential presence of a Class-A carcinogen is of no consequence to them and they have no motive to invest their capital in testing and potentially mitigating dangerous levels of radon. The eventual occupants will likely be a low-income family or who will never see the HUD Release Notice, much less an explanation of radon's deadly consequences."

ARPC attorney Holly Cole says HUD's shifting of liability without an Environmental Assessment may also be a violation of the National Environmental Policy Act. The Code of Federal Regulations written for NEPA compliance states, "It is HUD policy that all property proposed for use in HUD programs be free of hazardous materials, contamination, toxic chemicals and gases, and radioactive substances where a hazard could affect the health and safety of occupants or the utilization of the property."

"Radon is both a toxic gas and a radioactive substance," says Cole. "Simply having the purchaser of an FHA foreclosure sign a release does nothing to ensure the property is free of a substance that can so severely affect the health of the occupants."

At the request of Senators Lugar and Santorum, the HUD Office of Inspector General is currently conducting an investigation (Case HL-04-0612) into the HUD's failure to carry out legally mandated radon testing.

Sue Michael, a Pennsylvania victim of radon-induced lung cancer and member of Cancer Survivors Against Radon (CSAR) says HUD should require purchasers to test in order to qualify for a federally insured or sponsored mortgage. "There has to be a termite letter; why not a radon test? Radon-induced lung cancer is so preventable. If my house had been tested and fixed when we bought it, I wouldn't be fighting for my life right now."

Local Women’s Fitness Boot Camp Fights Obesity by Educating Community Through Free Supermarket Tours

Local Women’s Fitness Boot Camp Fights Obesity by Educating Community Through Free Supermarket Tours

Rancho Cucamonga, Ca Owners of the Inland Empire Adventure Boot Camp, Tony & Molli Rathstone, announce the launch of Free Boot Camp Supermarket Tours throughout the Inland Empire.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA (PRWEB) January 29, 2006

These tours through local supermarkets in the area are designed to educate consumers and fight deceptive food labels. Misinformation and loopholes in the FDA food labeling laws are all deceiving the masses and contributing to our nation’s obesity epidemic.

“These people are dying and looking for answers. We don’t want to be just another rep-counting personal training company. Our goal is to educate and empower people to take control of the way their body looks and feels,” explains Tony & Molli Rathstone, who have been operating the Women Only Boot Camp since May 2004. “Our tours which are free for a limited time cover the following key areas:

1.Hidden fats. Loopholes in the food labeling laws allow the food industry to label a product which is entirely made up of fat as “fat-free”. People need to know how to spot hidden fats.

2.Hidden sugar. The food industry also deceives consumers by replacing fat with sugar and labeling it “fat-free”. Sugar can also be hidden in our food because it is called many different names which can be confusing to consumers. People also need to know the difference between “sugar-free” and “no sugar added”.

3.Supportive nutrition. A supportive meal is one which supports the speeding of your metabolism. It provides material from which we can build and maintain cells, one which allows us to maintain a balance of hormone production allowing for on-going fat release, as well as one which provides adequate “highly thermic” fuel for energy production. People need to know the components of a supportive meal and not be duped into the latest diet craze.

4.Identifying quality food selections. Supermarkets are usually laid out in the same format. Generally, there are good sections and bad sections. We educate people on how to locate these quality sections for their food choices.”

Boot Camp Supermarket Tours are held at different locations throughout the Inland Empire area and last approximately 1 hour. You are encouraged to reserve your spot for a free supermarket tour by calling 909-556-9024 or logging onto http//www. inlandempirebootcamp. com and filling out the contact form.

Http//www. inlandempirebootcamp. com want to make a difference and help combat misinformation from both the food and fitness industries. “The fitness industry is the only industry in the world where almost as a rule, people fail to get what they pay for, and they blame themselves! We give people the real answers that they need to make positive improvements in their health,” says Tony & Molli Rathstone.

Staying Home! As Prices Soar, Foraging is Saving Money on Groceries, Gas and Vitamins

Staying Home! As Prices Soar, Foraging is Saving Money on Groceries, Gas and Vitamins

"Foraging for food in the forest or even in your backyard can take the strain off your pocket book, it does for me," says Weed Lady Mollie Stolle. Mollie will soon be sharing her wildcrafting know-how in a summer Weed-Shop in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Wildcrafting in Western North Carolina can be good exercise and may be one of the best places on the planet for getting a large variety of pristine nutritious plants, healing herbs and appetizing wild foods for even the pickiest eater. Mollie Stolle is proud to announce opening enrolment of her new summer weed-shop/workshop included is a weed eater's lunch. Mollie will host her weed shop just steps from the Blue Ridge parkway and a nearby drive to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.

Clyde, NC (PRWEB) June 14, 2008

Nearby Asheville is reaching new heights as a center for alternative culture, including health, wellness and personal development with the announcement of Wellness Weeds fun-shop, all day workshop. On Saturday, June 28, 2008, Weed Lady will share her special approach to wildcrafting in her summer weed workshop. Mollie has an eye for both herb safety and nature conservation. Mollie keeps a sharp focus on protecting endangered plant species. Mollie Stolle will be sharing her secrets at an undisclosed location at the mountain's base of nearby Cold Mountain, North Carolina. With room left for just seven herb enthusiasts, the class includes a wild gourmet meal. Participants will be gathering their own lunch, the menu, not final yet, may include fresh Stinging Nettle pesto, Burdock drizzled with Chick Weed vinegar, savory soup of Yellow Dock, Poke Sallet with Chick Weed, Stinging Nettle tea and Dandelion wine but mother nature can offer up her own surprises all this, something different or much more.

Mollie Stolle and her students do find themselves eating well with an added benefit of saving money. "It's wonderful to walk the land... getting fresh air, sunshine and exercise…just hiking the forest is Mother Nature's health club (Native Americans did the same) and I get to bring home supper without spending a penny," says Mollie. Her husband Bill Stolle, a Certified Public Accountant, says, "Mollie has saved us a bundle by gathering her herbs for supplements and wild foods, that saves on gasoline and a membership to health club." Stolle went on: "I crunched the numbers… it turns out Mollie saved us $3,722.37 last year alone, this year we'll save even more… if I factored in no doctor visits those numbers could skyrocket." Mollie has been foraging for herbs for 12 years and may have saved her family a small fortune.

More and more folks are discovering the mind-set of abundance, getting free, delicious, and nutritious food. What you get from nature's cupboard is many times more nutritious than anything you get at a grocery store. "Unfortunately, most refer to these treasures as weeds! I call them wonders." Says Mollie, "In all tests I know, wild edible plants are rated much higher in vitamins and minerals than commercially produced food. Local plants are much more beneficial for your health."

Weed lady goes on: "My favorite because this is a most nutritious plant, the Stinging Nettle. Nettle nourishes every cell in your body. This wild herb is also one of the most delicious. You can eat her raw (after you disarm her sting), cook her or make a nutritious tea. You could literally live off just Nettles."

On Saturday, June 28, 2008, select applicants can discover weed eating, grubbing and foraging as a real life wild crafter. Weed Lady's Harvest class, will not overwhelm a new student with huge numbers of edible plants and herbs. Mollie chooses to focus on a lower but still fairly good number of readily found and easily identifiable plants for her foraging classes. This increases a new student's confidence and starts them properly. Taraxacum officianles, Stellaria media, Urtica and Laportea sounds a bit scary but there's only a little talk of genius and species her class will focus on discovery and the joy of learning.

For a limited time, Weed Lady Mollie is offering her herb guide with recipes at no cost, including her favorite selections of native plant recipes, allowing you a taste of weed eating right out of your kitchen. Her gourmet recipes are sure to surprise and delight even the most discerning. Get Weed Ladies Wildcrafting Guide including Wild Recipes by calling a toll free number with a recorded message and then leaving your address call: 1-800-380-8152

The Blue Zone - Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who've Lived the Longest

The Blue Zone - Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who've Lived the Longest

What if you could add 10 years -- 10 good years -- to your life? A new book investigates the mysteries of human longevity around the world and reveals a revolutionary, cross-cultural and easy-to-implement formula for living longer, better.

Washington (PRWEB) January 14, 2008

Here's some good news: The average American can look younger, feel younger and avoid about 70 percent of the things that foreshorten his or her life.
Studies show that habits -- as opposed to genes -- determine up to 90 percent of our life expectancy. Only 6 percent of how long we'll live is explained by our parents' longevity. Adopting the optimal lifestyle, experts say, can give us up to 10 more good years of life. But what is the optimal lifestyle?

In a new book from National Geographic, THE BLUE ZONE: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who've Lived the Longest (National Geographic Books (http://http://press. nationalgeographic. com/pressroom/index. jsp? pageID=pressReleases_detail&siteID=1&cid=1198267665048); March 25, 2008; ISBN 978-1-4262-0274-2; $26), world-renowned explorer Dan Buettner (http://http://www. bluezones. com/dan-buettner/) leads teams of researchers across the globe to uncover the secrets of the Blue Zones -- four geographic regions where small populations are living remarkably long, full lives. In addition to sharing his extraordinary accounts of the oldest people on the planet, Buettner examines how their unique lifestyles correlate to their extraordinary longevity. Finally -- and most importantly -- Buettner details exactly how to incorporate these powerful lifestyle characteristics into your daily routine so that you, too, can live in the Blue Zone.

Partially funded by the National Institute on Aging, Buettner and his team of demographers and scientists embarked on what would become a massive, seven-year effort to identify and meticulously research the world's longevity hotspots. So far, they have confirmed the following four regions as Blue Zones: the Barbagia region of Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; the community of Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda, Calif.; and the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. In each Blue Zone, Buettner and his team found that people reach age 100 at rates significantly higher than the rest of us, and on average, they live longer, healthier lives. They also suffer a fraction of the rate of killer diseases found in America.

In THE BLUE ZONE, Buettner recounts how these four different cultures have taken their unique paths to longevity. He introduces longevity all-stars like Ushi Ukushima, who grows most of her own food and is a frequent party hostess at 104 years old; Giovanni Sannai, who, at 103 beat Buettner in arm wrestling (for real!), and Dr. Ellsworth Wareham, a practicing surgeon who still performs open-heart surgery at 93.

Working with the world's top longevity experts, Buettner describes the origin and nature of the unique lifestyle habits of the larger community in each Blue Zone, such as drinking a glass or two of red wine daily, growing a medicinal garden of mugwort, ginger and turmeric, and drinking unusually hard water. He then distills these myriad lifestyle elements into nine common lessons that are the underpinnings of daily life and ritual in each of the Blue Zones -- what he calls the "Power 9"-- that positively impact lifespan. Examples include moving naturally (being active without having to think about it), cutting calories by 20 percent, eating a more plant-based diet, participating in a spiritual community and finding your "ikigai" or "plan de vida" -- your purpose in life.

Of course, this information does no good unless it is put into practice. In THE BLUE ZONE, Buettner works with leading behavior experts to offer an action plan to put this cross-cultural distillation of the world's best longevity practices to work in your own life. Encoded in the world's longevity cultures are millennia of observed human experience. Buettner writes, "It's not coincidence that the way these people eat, interact with each other, shed stress, heal themselves, avoid disease, and view their world yield them more good years of life. To learn from them, we need only to be open and ready to listen."

Buettner also tackles the realities of aging to understand some basic principles. What are the chances of actually reaching 100 years old? Is there any truth to claims that some pills and cosmetics can reverse the signs of aging? What promises do vitamin supplements, hormone therapies and genetic intervention offer? To answer these and other questions, Buettner enlists the help of leading scientists in the fields of biology, geriatrics and the science of longevity. Each agrees that the only proven "fountain of youth" is found in emulating the key elements of those who are living longer in the Blue Zones.

THE BLUE ZONE also points readers to a powerful online tool called the Vitality Compass. Created in conjunction with the Minnesota School of Public Health, the Vitality Compass gives you a starting point against which to measure your longevity lifestyle. Timed to the book's publication, it will be live on Buettner's Web site, www. bluezones. com (http://www. bluezones. com), on March 25, 2008. The Vitality Compass asks a series of questions and, based on the answers given, calculates 1) your potential life expectancy at your current age; 2) your healthy life-expectancy -- the number of good years you can expect to live; 3) the number of extra years you are likely to gain if you optimize your lifestyle. It offers a customized list of suggestions to help you with that plan.

Buettner explains, "You will not find longevity in a bottle of diet pills or with hormone therapy, but by embracing this a la carte menu of a few simple but powerful habits, and by creating the right community around yourself." In THE BLUE ZONE, he blends his lifestyle formula with the latest longevity research to inspire lasting behavioral change and add years to your life.

Physical Activity Is Natural Pain Reliever for Arthritis

Physical Activity Is Natural Pain Reliever for Arthritis

Physical activity is actually a natural pain reliever for most people suffering from arthritis. A recent study concluded that regular exercise is an effective course in significantly improving and managing arthritis pain.

Atlanta (PRWEB) April 9, 2008 -

It may seem counterintuitive to exercise when suffering with joint pain, but physical activity is actually a natural pain reliever for most people suffering from arthritis. A recent study published in Arthritis Care and Research concluded that regular exercise, specifically the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, is an effective course in significantly improving and managing arthritis pain. This is good news for the aging population of U. S. baby boomers who want to get back to basics with a natural remedy for pain. In fact, arthritis is projected to increase by 40 percent, affecting 67 million Americans, in the next two decades.

The in-depth study looked at the effectiveness of the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, developed in 1987 to reduce pain and stiffness by keeping joints flexible and muscles strong. Key findings of the study include participants reporting a decrease in pain and fatigue, an increase in upper and lower extremity function, and an increase in strength after participating in the basic, eight-week exercise program. Also, participants who continued the exercise program independently, beyond eight weeks, sustained improvement in reduced stiffness.

"The study showed that the exercise program is suitable for every fitness level, even inactive older individuals," said author of the study Leigh Callahan, Ph. D., Thurston Arthritis Research Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Many people believe the myth that exercise exacerbates their symptoms. The truth revealed in the study is that symptoms improved with exercise."

Exercising for joint health is different than exercising for cardio health. People living with arthritis don't have to sweat to achieve success. The basic eight-week Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program consists of low-impact routines with gentle range-of-motion movements that can be done while sitting or standing.

"Even minor lifestyle changes like taking a 10-minute walk three times a day can reduce the impact of arthritis on a person's daily activities and help to prevent developing more painful arthritis," explains Patience White, M. D., chief public health officer of the Arthritis Foundation. "Physical activity can actually reduce pain naturally and decrease dependence on pain medications."

About the Study
The objective of the study was to evaluate the basic eight-week Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program for improvements in symptoms, functioning, level of physical activity and psychosocial outcomes. A total of 346 individuals with self-reported arthritis from 18 sites participated in a randomized controlled trial. The eight-week exercise program consisted of exercise twice weekly for one hour. The study participants had a mean age of 70 years (ranging from 32 to 94 years old), 90 percent were female, 75 percent were white and 60 percent had more than a high school degree.

About the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, formerly known as People with Arthritis Can Exercise (PACE), is a program developed by the Arthritis Foundation in 1987 to promote self-management of arthritis through exercise. The program is offered at basic and advanced levels, and is available throughout the country in many convenient community-based settings. A detailed listing of classes in local areas can be found on the Arthritis Foundation's Web site at www. arthritis. org.

About the Arthritis Foundation
The Arthritis Foundation is the leading health organization addressing the needs of some 46 million Americans living with arthritis, the nation's most common cause of disability. Founded in 1948, with headquarters in Atlanta, the Arthritis Foundation has multiple service points located throughout the country.

The Arthritis Foundation is the largest private, not-for-profit contributor to arthritis research in the world, funding more than $400 million in research grants since 1948. Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the foundation helps individuals take control of arthritis by providing public health education; pursuing public policy and legislation; and conducting evidence-based programs to improve the quality of life for those living with arthritis. Information is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-283-7800 or www. arthritis. org.

Nothing Ever Changes at My Hospital

Nothing Ever Changes at My Hospital

Nurses can change healthcare, but it starts from within and not from the outside in. Validating your nursing knowledge and skills is the first step to personal and professional development that creates change.

(PRWEB) March 7, 2005

“Nothing ever changes around here, and I mean ever!” a nurse said to me very emphatically. And I had to admit that she was right. Very little ever changes on the outside. It’s on the inside that change can be made in leaps and bounds. I’ve found that in my nursing career, the more I change, the more everything else changes…for the better.

Nursing offers more opportunities than any other career choice. In my nursing career IÂ’ve worked in a variety of different clinical areas, taught nursing students, served as an expert witness, taught continuing education, and worked as a unit manager and house supervisor. Each of these opportunities helped me contribute more to the nursing field and impact thousands of patients.

In 1990, I became certified in Critical Care nursing, and that was just the beginning of a life of constant improvement. The experience of studying for the certification exam made me aware of just how much I didnÂ’t know about nursing and stimulated an interest in continuing my education. From there I obtained a MasterÂ’s degree and pursued an additional two years of post-masterÂ’s work. The process changed my attitude about healthcare delivery and my role in making nursing all it should be.

Anything that stagnates becomes putrid. The quest for lifetime learning taught me that if anything is going to change itÂ’s up to me to initiate that change, and to begin with myself. When I pursued additional education and certification, my attitudes changed. I saw new opportunities within my current job and outside of it too.

Anyone can do what I’ve done. I’m not just “lucky” because I have a Master’s degree, or because I’m certified in Critical Care nursing. Those things just opened more doors for me. I know nurses with diplomas and associate degrees who teach continuing education and serve as legal nurse consultants. I know nurses with a bachelor’s degree who are managers, supervisors, and teach nursing students.

You can too, and it starts with certification. The extra letters at the end of my name donÂ’t make me a better nurse; itÂ’s the study and self-development that went into certification that makes me a better nurse. In order to consider becoming certified, I had to value myself and had to desire to validate my expertise. The process of preparing for certification taught me things I didnÂ’t know, or had forgotten. And the combination of taking action on my own behalf, and additional study led to more confidence, better collaborative relationships with my peers, and better care for my patients.

Certification is something that you do for you. I’ve stopped teaching certification classes to people who are just “going through the motions.” They attend a seminar because their hospital wants them to become certified and will pay for it. I want to teach the nurses who want certification as a personal and professional goal. Together we’ll get “fired up” about it! These are the nurses who’ll change the system. These are the nurses that our patients rely on. These are the nurses who don’t wait for the system to change before changing themselves – these nurses seek out opportunities to BE the change they want to see happen.

“Nothing ever changes around here” may be true for some, but you don’t have to make it a part of your career. Join me and thousands of other nurses in becoming certified to validate your expertise and start the amazing journey in a career more fulfilling than you ever expected!

David W. Woodruff, MSN, RN, CNS, CCRN helps nurses become extraordinary, and has helped thousands of nurses to become certified through his unique “Test Prep” programs that guarantee success on the certification exams. Get more information at www. Ed4Nurses. com

Protect Yourself Against Cell Phone Radiation and Electromagnetic Fields

Protect Yourself Against Cell Phone Radiation and Electromagnetic Fields

You have probably read or heard about how cell phone radiation can affect your health. We are exposed to so much electromagnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation these days! You cannot escape from it but you can protect yourself with Chi Waveguard.

(PRWEB) April 26, 2006

In today's lifestyle, you are exposed to man-made electromagnetic fields. The growing demands of ever-changing technologies and changes in social behavior have created more negative electromagnetic fields around you.

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) above certain levels can trigger biological effects! Over the decades, electromagnetic field sources have become the focus of health concerns.

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) is everywhere such as:

In the workplace: computers, cell phones, fax machines, copy machines, fluorescent lights, printers, scanners, telephone (PBX) switching systems, electrical instruments, motors and other electrical devices.

At home: television sets, stereo systems, air conditioners, fluorescent lights, telephone answering machines, cell and portable phones, refrigerators, blenders, portable heaters, clothes washers and dryers, coffee makers, vacuum cleaners, toasters, microwave ovens and others.

Reported symptoms of exposure to high levels of electromagnetic radiation include:

headaches anxiety depression nausea fatique loss of libido cancer brain tumors Alzheimer's Parkinson's

You cannot escape from it but you can protect your family and yourself from electromagnetic fields.

The FDA states that "the available scientific evidence does not demonstrate any adverse health effects associated with the use of mobile phones." However, that doesn't mean that the potential for harm from electromagnetic radiation doesn't exist.

Here are some facts about EMF:

1. The EMF problem in growing - 35% of Americans rank electromagnetic field as the number one health concern. Damage is being inflicted today even if you are not aware of it.

2. Bombarded with man-made EMF - when your body is bombarded with man-made EMF (electromagnetic fields), its innate intelligence and energy can be weakened. This makes it more difficult for your body to protect itself from negative influences.

3. 100 million times more electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation than your grandparents - some scientists estimate that you are now daily exposed to 100 million times the EMF radiation of your grandparents.

4. Lower energy levels - your body's energy is altered by the high frequencies of EMF. Man-made radiation magnifies your body's "fight or flight" responses. It compounds your adrenal loads from other stressors and significantly reduces your ability to cope effectively.

5. Increased daily stress levels - EMF disrupts your natural energy levels and hence triggers your stress responses. Alternative and traditional doctors have reported that electromagnetic fields (EMF) is a co-factor in increasing your daily stress levels.

6. Impaired ability to heal - stress can impair your body's natural ability to heal. EMF adds stress to your personal stress and fatigue, and also adds stress your already taxed system. EMF contributes to energy depletion and fatigue from cell phones, air travel and household appliances.

Those are more than enough reasons to reduce the electromagnetic fields around you. Chi WaveGuard at http://www. anti-emf. com (http://www. anti-emf. com) is a health-protector that contains chi technology material. It is the result of a state-of-the-art bio-wave technology that was developed in Japan. C. J. Chivers Wins 2007 Michael Kelly Award

C. J. Chivers Wins 2007 Michael Kelly Award

Esquire Magazine Contributor Honored at Awards Dinner in Washington

Washington, D. C., (PRWEB) April 23, 2007

David Bradley, chairman of Atlantic Media Company, announced tonight that C. J. Chivers is this year's recipient of the Michael Kelly Award. He won for a reconstruction of the 2004 Beslan school siege written for Esquire.

The $25,000 award is given annually to a journalist whose work exemplifies a quality that animated Michael Kelly's own career: the fearless pursuit and expression of truth. Kelly, who was the editor of two Atlantic Media publications, the Atlantic and National Journal, was killed while covering the war in Iraq in 2003.

According to a statement from the award judges, "Chivers produced an extraordinary hour-by-hour account of the school siege that is impossible to put down. Through careful, persistent reporting, Chivers provided Esquire readers with a haunting look at how innocent hostages, Chechen terrorists, and Russian authorities responded to a crisis that left 362 dead."

In addition to Chivers, the judges recognized journalists from four publications as finalists: Rukmini Maria Callimachi, an Associated Press correspondent; Jesse Hamilton, a reporter for The Hartford Courant; William Langewiesche, international correspondent for Vanity Fair; and Charles Forelle, James Bandler, Mark Maremont, and Steve Stecklow, reporters with The Wall Street Journal.

The journalists were honored at a dinner tonight in Washington.

The finalists were selected from a total of 57 entries from journalists at U. S.-based newspapers and magazines. The award is for work published in 2006.

A panel of five journalists served as judges for this year's award: Peter Canellos, Washington bureau chief, The Boston Globe; David Grann, staff writer, The New Yorker; Charles Green, editor, National Journal; Cullen Murphy; editor at large, Vanity Fair; and Margaret Talbot, staff writer, The New Yorker. Murphy, former managing editor of the Atlantic, recused himself from deliberations and voting regarding the Vanity Fair entry.

Atlantic Media Company is a Washington, D. C.-based publishing company whose flagship properties include the Atlantic, National Journal, and Government Executive.

WINNER
C. J. Chivers
Contributor, Esquire

C. J. Chivers arrived in Beslan soon after its elementary school had been attacked by Chechen terrorists in August 2004. Over the next 18 months, he returned again and again, on weekends, on vacation, determined to tell the definitive story of how 362 people, many of them children, ended up dying there. He interviewed some survivors in sessions lasting as long as 10 hours. His goal, he said, was to create the first "wide-lit narrative of the event." In reporting the story, Chivers acknowledged later, he was "essentially obsessed." The result of his obsession was a gripping 18,000-word, hour-by-hour account that both contradicts the official story of the Breslan hostage crisis and illuminates man's capacity for good and evil. Or, as Esquire put it, "an extraordinary accounting of the experience of terror in the age of terrorism."

Chivers is a Moscow correspondent for The New York Times and a regular contributor to Esquire. After graduating from Cornell University in 1988, he joined the U. S. Marine Corps and served in the Persian Gulf War. Honorably discharged in 1994 with the rank of captain, Chivers entered the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, graduating in 1995 as valedictorian. He began his writing career at the Providence Journal, and joined the Times in 1999 as a metro reporter, covering crime and law enforcement. He was in downtown Manhattan on the morning of September 11, 2001, and witnessed the attacks on the World Trade Center. For the next twelve days he remained on the site. Since then, Chivers has also reported from Afghanistan, Israel, Iraq, and Russia. Chivers, 42, lives in Moscow with his wife, Suzanne Keating, and their four children.

FINALISTS
Rukmini Maria Callimachi
Correspondent, Associated Press

Rukmini Maria Callimachi spent a year in New Orleans chronicling the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina for the Associated Press. Her articles artfully captured the challenges confronting a city struggling to reclaim its spirit. She wrote about a three-year-old child who rode out Katrina's waves inside a cooler and is now terrified of taking baths. She wrote about the arrival of the new phonebook as a mark of how much things had changed. (The number of pages listing contractors had more than doubled from the year before, while the number of 'Beauty Salon' listings was down 42 percent.) And she wrote about how, amid all of the destruction and despair, the wedding business in New Orleans was booming. "It reminds me of Valentine's Day," a marriage license clerk told her. "Except it's like Valentine's Day all the time."

Callimachi began reporting out of Dakar, Senegal, as one of the West African correspondents for the Associated Press in late 2006. Before that, she spent a year in New Orleans documenting the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She joined the AP in Portland, Ore., in 2003. Her reporting has won the Templeton Religion Story of the Year award and the Associated Press Managing Editors' Charles Rowe Award. She began her career as a freelancer for Time magazine in New Delhi, India. Born in Bucharest, Romania, Callimachi graduated with honors from Dartmouth College and completed her masters in linguistics at Exeter College, Oxford. Her poetry has been published in more than 20 journals, including The American Scholar. In 2000, she co-led the Royal Geographical Society of London's expedition to Tibet.

Jesse Hamilton
Reporter, The Hartford Courant

Over the course of a year, Jesse Hamilton reported on the experiences of the Marines of Charlie Company before, during, and after their tour of duty in Iraq. He trained with them in the Mojave Desert, joined them on patrols and house-to-house raids in Fallujah, and stood with them in Arlington as they buried one of their own. Through their stories, Hamilton told the story of war and warriors. In simple, direct, and compelling prose, he showed Hartford Courant readers what Iraq looked like, what it smelled like, and what it felt like for Marine reservists from Connecticut called upon to fight.

Hamilton has been writing about the military for The Hartford Courant since 2002. Before that, he worked at several newspapers in Washington state, winning a George Polk Award and an Investigative Reporters and Editors Award at the Yakima Herald-Republic for an investigation of the fighting of a forest fire that killed four wildland firefighters. He won the Society of Professional Journalists' feature-writing award for his account of a true-life murder mystery in a small town. In his career, he's also covered a tribal whale hunt, the fire that killed 100 in a Rhode Island nightclub, and three back-to-back hurricanes striking central Florida. Hamilton, 32, was born in Portland, Ore., and earned a B. A. degree from Western Washington University. He lives in Groton, Conn., with his wife, Audrey.

William Langewiesche
International Correspondent, Vanity Fair

Since the U. S. invasion in March of 2003, William Langewiesche has made 10 reporting trips to Iraq and chronicled its deterioration with clear-eyed precision. In perhaps his most ambitious reporting effort, Langewiesche carefully reconstructed the killing by U. S. Marines of 24 Iraqi civilians in the city of Haditha in November, 2005. In his hands, Haditha becomes not only a story about the Americans and Iraqis caught up in a tragic chain of events, but also a cautionary tale about the rules of engagement under which American forces operate in Iraq. Haditha, he wrote, "is what defeat looks like in this war."

Langewiesche assumed the newly created post of international correspondent for Vanity Fair in 2006. Prior to that, Langewiesche was a national correspondent at The Atlantic. During his tenure there, he was nominated for eight consecutive National Magazine Awards, and won in 2002 for reporting for his article "The Crash of EgyptAir 990." Langewiesche is the author of numerous books, among them American Ground: Unbuilding the World Trade Center, an insider's account of the cleanup of the Twin Towers, and The Outlaw Sea: A World of Freedom, Chaos, and Crime. His book The Atomic Bazaar: The Rise of the Nuclear Poor is due out this spring. Prior to joining The Atlantic, he had been a professional pilot. Langewiesche resides in California and France.

Charles Forelle, James Bandler, Mark Maremont, Steve Stecklow
The Wall Street Journal

Reporters aren't known for writing algorithms, but one that The Wall Street Journal's Charles Forelle devised helped trigger federal investigations of nearly 140 companies for massive and long-hidden fraud. Forelle, working with Journal colleagues James Bandler, Mark Maremont, and Steve Stecklow, used the statistical-modeling technique to find likely perpetrators of stock-options abuses. The Journal showed that options were often rigged, providing billions in extra pay for executives. In one case, the Journal determined that the odds of a chief executive's stock-option grants always being dated just before a rise in the stock price were one in 300 billion. In another case, one in 200 million. As a result of the Journal's inquiry, at least 70 top business executive lost their jobs.

Charles Forelle is a reporter in The Wall Street Journal's Boston bureau. He joined the Journal as an intern in June 2002. Born in New York, Forelle received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Yale, where he was managing editor of the Yale Daily News from 2000 to 2001. He currently resides in Boston.

James Bandler is part of the Journal's special projects reporting team and is based in Boston. He joined the Journal in September 1999 as a health care and education writer. A graduate of Brown University, Bandler has also worked at the Rutland Herald, Barre Times Argus, and Boston Globe.

Mark Maremont is a special projects editor at the Journal, based in Boston. He joined the paper in May 1997. Maremont began his journalism career as a New York-based telecommunications editor at BusinessWeek. Maremont received a bachelor's degree from Brown University and a master's degree from Columbia University.

Steve Stecklow is a senior special writer and news editor in the Journal's Boston bureau. He previously worked in the Journal's London bureau as a global investigative reporter. He has also worked at the Atlantic City Press, Philadelphia Bulletin, and Philadelphia Inquirer. Stecklow received a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
