Acumen Fund Announces Ripple Effect Pilot Projects In Kenya To Identify Innovative Solutions To Water Challenges

Acumen Fund Announces Ripple Effect Pilot Projects In Kenya To Identify Innovative Solutions To Water Challenges

Pilots will enable local organizations to test new ideas for delivery and storage of safe water for consumers who lack access

New York (PRWEB) December 1, 2009

Acumen Fund, a nonprofit venture firm addressing poverty in South Asia and East Africa, announced that it has selected four organizations in Kenya to conduct pilot programs to address issues of safe water transportation and storage.

The pilot programs are part of a broader project called Ripple Effect, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which brings together Acumen Fund and IDEO, a leading design firm, to apply design thinking and entrepreneurial, market-based solutions to the challenges of safe water storage and delivery. Acumen Fund and IDEO worked in collaboration to identify and partner with the following local organizations in the water sector, each of which received innovation grants to pilot their ideas across Kenya and pro-bono consulting support in technical design and business models:
Kentainers, a manufacturer of water and sanitation containers, will develop a model for water kiosks that include water storage, treatment, and container washing stations.

Maji Na Ufanisi, an NGO that builds community toilets and water kiosks in informal settlements, will host a design competition to develop water carts and storage vessels appropriate for community-based business models to distribute water.

PureFlow, which distributes household water purification solutions, will develop a scalable business model for delivery of safe drinking water through a business-in-a-box safe water kiosk system.

Umande Trust, an NGO which works on sanitation, will create "water choice points," that allow customers to have options around purchasing and transporting water.

"We're very excited to see the work that has already begun," said Sangeeta Chowdhry, Ripple Effect Project Manager, Acumen Fund. "The ideas these organizations are piloting represent creative, out-of-the-box approaches to improving water treatment, delivery and storage in rural areas and informal settlements of Kenya."

Through its investments in the water sector, Acumen Fund has come to understand many of the challenges entrepreneurs face in providing safe, clean water to their customers. These latest Ripple Effect pilots seek to secure the "last mile" of water delivery. Having successfully completed its first phase in India with five organizations, Ripple Effect recently launched its East Africa phase: first by conducting an assessment of issues faced by low-income communities on the ground, followed by a workshop with local water organizations to brainstorm and create innovations that will improve water delivery and storage across Kenya and the region.

"Ripple Effect is a new model of innovation," said Sally Madsen, Project Leader, IDEO. "Rather than trying to push a single solution, we're exploring a range of methods to develop products, services, and systems that fit the missions and businesses of the Indian and Kenyan organizations with whom we are partnering."

A team from Acumen Fund and IDEO spent two weeks with the four organizations in Kenya to provide business and design mentoring to support the development of these ideas. The pilot programs will conclude at the end of January 2010 with an Award Ceremony and presentation of the results.

"The Ripple Effect project is helping fuel real innovation among these Kenyan organizations in the water sector," said Biju Mohandas, Acumen Fund's East Africa Manager. "The goal is for these water companies to adapt the best of the pilot projects and expand their implementation to more effectively serve low-income consumers across Kenya and the region."

VentNation Officially Launches; Gives Users Platform to Vent Online

VentNation Officially Launches; Gives Users Platform to Vent Online

New website offers users a safe haven to vent their frustrations, rant about a variety of topics, and air their dirty laundry online.

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (PRWEB) October 27, 2009

Internet users now have a new social media platform at their disposal - except this is not any ordinary social networking website. VentNation seeks to be the foremost online venue for individuals who want to either release stress, vent their anger and frustration about an individual or topic, or comment and rant about a hot button issue. Launched recently, VentNation takes anger management (http://www. ventnation. com) to a whole new level - if one has bottled-up emotions about a certain individual, group of individuals, or issue, he/she can simply visit VentNation and spill the beans.

The website features the catchy slogan, "Relax, Relate, Release", and is the brainchild of Alex Berhane in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Berhane explained his vision about VentNation: "What I wanted to do was create a place for people to vent their frustrations. I also wanted people to come to the site, read something that maybe they could relate to and add a post of their own." Berhane also delved into how VentNation was different than the typical websites. "Facebook, Twitter, MySpace...people can vent their feelings, but they often have to restrain themselves. VentNation removes that barrier. Users can let it rip, and be anonymous if they so choose."

Upon registering for a free membership, users can have at it and enjoy VentNation's numerous features. Individuals can post or "vent" about a variety of topics, ranging from the ordinary (politics, religion, products) to the more explicit (sex, relationships, "WTF"). Users in the VentNation community can rate each other's postings using a slider at the side of each post, and posts can be rated anywhere from "Sucks" to "Wow!". The higher a post's rating, the more prominently it gets featured on the VentNation homepage. The site also includes a section for anonymous posts, where, as stated previously, users can remain anonymous, preventing potentially harmful repercussions if the vent is about a boss, an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend, or former friend.

Another distinguishing characteristic of VentNation (http://www. ventnation. com) is its social bookmarking functions. Explains Berhane: "We encourage users to not only vent about the usual, daily life happenings, but to post links to news stories or hot topics - the community could then rant about them, and create healthy dialogue." In addition, VentNation allows users to submit all types of links, videos, photos and blog articles that may pertain to their vent, or simply share an interesting link that the community may find of use.

Though VentNation has only been online for a short time, it is already garnering considerable press attention and has been a hit with thousands of users, who are finding the site as a useful tool to spew their anger and vent their frustrations. The site can be viewed as therapeutic for some, since it allows them a platform to manage their anger and release their stress safely and controllably.

If one is having relationship troubles, problems at work, or simply feels the need to vent about a news story or any other important topic, they have a new place to vent about it - VentNation.

Feng Shui Master Launches New YouTube Video that Integrates Spirit and Science (the God particle) for Personal Inner Peace

Feng Shui Master Launches New YouTube Video that Integrates Spirit and Science (the God particle) for Personal Inner Peace

Jami Lin's Light of Possibility Video is now available on YouTube. Learn how to integrate Spirit & Science to create inner peace

Lanham, MD (Vocus) September 4, 2009

Internationally renowned master and best-selling author, Jami Lin, shares universal secrets that combine Spirit and Science to maximize personal inner peace in her YouTube video Light of Possibility. Quantum physicists are on a quest to find the God particle (http://www. pr-promopro. com/Media/Videos/CA/light. php) or cosmic intelligence. Utilizing scientific elements of color (http://www. coloralchemy. com/) and Feng Shui (http://www. feng-shui-interior-design. com/), the God particle can be found within the human experience.

Jami Lin shares, "Somehow, I always felt connected to this cosmic intelligence -- I believe that we all are connected if we just spend a little time developing awareness we can tap into the God particle within ourselves." The video helps people recognize that connection begins by daily reflection on one's happiness and the conscious choice to live a positive life.

Create a special place in the home for meditation purposes. It should be free from clutter and have special object that speak to your vision of perfect happiness. Amplify harmony with moderate light levels: not to bright, nor hidden in the darkness. If a favorite, incorporate scented candles and/or quiet music.

Chinese metaphysics, cross-cultural spiritual traditions, and even the Big Bang theory beautifully describe the creation of the universe. In a nutshell, first there was nothing but the void of darkness, and then there was Light. Spiritual traditions dating back to the ancients all use the symbolism of the White Light for the energy of the Creator. Visualize that White Light of Possibility entering through the head and radiating throughout the body and touch specifically colored items that will be used for the journaling experience. Focus thoughts on the positive aspects of the day and reflect upon methods to transform negative dark aspects back into that positive light. Return the white light and give gratitude for its guidance when the meditation is complete.

Enhance the benefits of Feng Shui by learning how to position furniture and balance color throughout each room in the home. Stay out of the darkness by learning how to eliminate the negative energy and how to harness the positive energy.

Discover how to dress in the Five Chinese elements to create success for each day. Learn how to position the body when sleeping and sitting to maximize potential. Activate the energies with aromatherapy. Find out how accessories can channel the universe and subconscious to share answers to life questions.

Living in darkness is painful and is such a waste when we have a conscious choice to be happy. "Discover the conscious choice of being happy and living in the Light of Possibility video," it is the root of all self-help and personal growth (http://www. pr-promopro. com/Media/Videos/CA/light. php). Be happy: Enjoy Jami Lin's two-part video today.

ColorAlchemy is featured on HeartandHome radio show (heartandhomehealing. com/upcoming_shows. htm) and discusses how to integrate the color blue to calm the body and clear the mind. Jami Lin, award-winning book of ColorAlchemy (http://www. coloralchemy. com/), shares how to harness a daily color to make improvements in their lives. "Blue is the color of Friday to help people focus." Blue is the color improved mental clarity for clearer communications and decisiveness. It helps people mean what they say and say what they mean."

Rooted in Newtonian and quantum science, ancient spiritual and healing traditions, and clinical studies, color therapy provides time-tested results for mind, body, and spirit wellness (http://www. pr-promopro. com/Media/Ideas/spirit. php). The award-winning book ColorAlchemy (http://www. coloralchemy. com/), by Jami Lin teaches people how to harness a daily color to make improvements in their lives.

"Following the sequence and simplicity of a rainbow, linking the essential, seven attributes of all human need and desire is as easy as remembering the days of the week." "No professional color therapy (http://www. coloralchemy. com/) required, just simple-to-incorporate habits. By merely thinking about the color of day and its respective attributes, the ultimate goal becomes automatic. The mind instantly calls upon the color attribute that is needed, and with its conditioned benefits, favorably shifts any circumstance."

Practicing is ColorAlchemy is easy; integrate color in the conscious mind by strengthening red attributes such as vitality on Monday. Tuesday, creatively incorporate more orange for pleasure. Command yellow on Wednesday for confidence. Trust green on Thursday for deepening love. Focus on blue on Friday for clarity. Connect with indigo on Saturday for awaking intuition and find inner peace with violet on Sunday for spiritual connection. "Automatically, the 7 Days and 7 Colors easily convert into 7 Triumphs."

Blue represents the throat chakra, which encompasses the body parts surrounding the throat area and used in speaking. Affected body parts include the Adam's apple, lungs, vocal cords, throat, jaw, neck, mouth, shoulders, thyroid, and parathyroid.

A lack of blue color indicates a person may feel bottled-up or incapable of expressing oneself. He is unable to be truthful thus creating negativity and loss of potential. Unresolved feelings give way to an inability to clearly communicate thoughts and feelings. He may start to feel depressed and moody and seem to lack emotional depth. The poor self-esteem will show through, and for those listing, they will have trouble understanding what is being said.

Physical manifestations of an imbalance in the throat chakra include sore throat, stiff neck, colds, lung problems, thyroid problems, and other mouth problems. Common physical addictions are to smoking, nasal inhalants, and seeking a runner's high.

Blue is the color that allows for truth of emotions and feelings to be expressed outwardly, bringing integrity to the spoken words and thoughts. It brings harmony to speech and voice. It allows sharing of creativity and achievement of personal goals. It provides a sense of calm and of relaxed comfort. It allows for focus, dedication, and diligence. It is also beneficial for those who suffer from insomnia or hyperactivity. Blue color cools the body, thus reducing fevers, slowing bleeding, and reducing inflammation. It also can alleviate respiratory ailments such as cold and flu.

Relief can be brought to these areas by breathing in the color blue. With eyes closed, meditate for two minutes on the color blue, or on blue objects, while taking deep breaths. Envision a healing blue ray of light entering your body.

Use healing hands to touch affected parts of the body while focusing on that blue color and practicing color breathing.

Surround in the power of blue by wearing blue clothing, adding a blue pillow or throw, changing a cell phone background or computer screen saver, or using blue dishes at meals and snacks. Store vitamins or pills in blue containers.

Excessive blue brings about frustration and a fanatical nature. The person will talk too much, but not really saying anything. Manipulation occurs as a result of a strong desire for fame and power. On the other hand, too much blue can also lead a prone person to depression. Orange color is the balance for an overabundance for blue. Inhale the orange and exhale the excess blue.

People healthy in the throat chakra tend to be spiritual seekers, thoughtful, and unselfish. They are good communicators, feeling relaxed and calm.

NUTRIfoundation Calls on Schools Nationwide to Transform the Nutritional Choices of Meal Programs and To Include Nutrition Education in Their Curriculum

NUTRIfoundation Calls on Schools Nationwide to Transform the Nutritional Choices of Meal Programs and To Include Nutrition Education in Their Curriculum

NUTRIfoundation is holding its first fundraiser on Friday, November 4, 2005 at Crazy Buffet at 945 W. State Rd. 436, Unit 1179, Altamonte Springs, FL at 7:30 pm.

Kissimmee, FL (PRWEB) November 7, 2005

A group of health professionals, parents, teachers and community members have united to create a non-profit organization called NUTRIfoundation to petition for schools to adopt a meal program providing nutritional, whole-food choices and to include nutrition education in their curriculum. They are working to send specific recommendations on how to improve the nutritional quality of foods and beverages sold on school grounds and in school fundraisers.

These changes will not affect revenue of food sales for schools because there are healthier options that can replace the now highly-processed, low-nutrition, sugar-laden products supplied by corporate enterprises. The members of NUTRIfoundation are willing to support and assist schools in decisions made to improve on foods now sold in schools. The foundation seeks a change that will benefit the students' behavior, learning abilities, performance, health and wellness.

"It is urgent and critical that we transform the mindset of the school administrators, to prioritize the health of children over profits. Our future generation of children and young adults in high schools are our soon-to-be, corporate co-workers, politicians, doctors, and leaders, etc. It is essential that their fundamental nutritional and physical fitness needs are met and sustained for life because this will impact everyone's quality of life in terms of optimal performance, behavior, good health, lower national health care costs, and a 'trickle-down effect' to our economy. Our cause is for the benefit of everyone." states Diana Chauvin, Chief Director of the NUTRIfoundation.

One out of three American children is overweight and fifteen percent of all U. S. children are obese. There are over 300,000 deaths each year in the United States that are associated with obesity. Despite the skyrocketing childhood obesity rates, many high-calorie, low-nutrition foods are still being sold in our schools.

The Appleton, Wisconsin Alternative School featured in the documentary Super Size Me has achieved significant results with "troubled" teens by changing their diet. "We noticed a change from the get-go," said teacher Mary Bruyette, one of the catalysts for the Appleton Central program. "All teachers reported that students were able to concentrate for longer periods in class."

Wound Care Products Market to Reach $15.3 Billion by 2010, Driven by Sealants, Growth Factors, and Skin Replacements, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc

Wound Care Products Market to Reach $15.3 Billion by 2010, Driven by Sealants, Growth Factors, and Skin Replacements, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

Driven by advanced wound care products, world wound care products market is projected to grow at a healthy pace of 5.9% over the next five years. United States represents the world's largest and the fastest growing market. The market is likely to sustain its lead through the forecast period, reaching US$6.1 billion in 2010. Europe represents the world's second largest and the second fastest market for wound care products.

San Jose, California (PRWEB) July 9, 2007

A new report on wound care products has been released by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. "Wound Care Products: A Global Strategic Business Report" presents comprehensive analyses and includes coverage of the US, Canada, Japan, Europe (France, Germany, Italy, UK, Spain, and Rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan), Latin America and Rest of World Markets. The report provides in-depth analysis of key trends, issues, business opportunities, and challenges in the wound care products market. The report takes a hard look at new product developments and technologies and the impact of these on the future growth of the market.

Wound care has come a long way from being an art to emerging as a science. Modern wound healing principles and protocols are replacing some of the more 'traditional' methods. Evolving biotechnology has allowed manufacturers to develop new products as a means to garner higher profit margins. With continuous developments in the wound care market, companies are devising new procedures and therapies for reducing the time associated with the healing process, and for reducing costs. Despite the predominance of low-cost traditional wound care products, advancements in technology continue to foster the development and introduction of revolutionary advanced wound care products.

Advanced wound care products market (http://www. strategyr. com/MCP-3230.asp) comprising sealants, growth factors, skin replacements, and others would be the key driver of the overall wound care products market (http://www. strategyr. com/MCP-3230.asp). Growing at a robust CAGR of nearly 11%, the advanced wound care products market is set to touch US$5.4 billion by 2010. Although advanced products cost more, their effectiveness and the reduced healing time represent the key driving factors. Traditional wound care products market (http://www. strategyr. com/MCP-3230.asp) is experiencing tepid growth owing to a marked shift to advanced wound care products. However, these products account for the bulk of world wound care products market, at nearly 70% in 2006. Low cost and easy reimbursement in hospital settings are the primary factors that continue to sustain this mature market.

There has been a fast paced progress in the industry for advanced wound care products since the 1970s and the industry has ventured into new areas with the entry of highly developed products. Aided by increased market penetration with substantial presence on the shelf of major distribution channels, advanced wound care products have gained a ready market acceptance. Active wound care products market (http://www. strategyr. com/MCP-3230.asp) of the advanced category represents the fastest sub-category in the overall wound care products market, at 17% CAGR over the next five years. Within the active segment, growth factors market and skin replacements market hold immense potential, forecast to register CAGRs of 16% and 22% respectively. Sealants market, also part of the advanced category, is expected to grow at a robust pace to reach US$1.4 billion in 2010.

Rapid growth in the global wound care arena has led to intense competition, with players vying to gain a larger share of the market. The market comprises players who continue to dominate the market through heavy discounts. Such large players also benefit immensely from their strong brand identities for maintaining dominant positions. A key trend in the marketplace is the widely prevalent alliances between large pharmaceutical companies and the emerging biotech industry for the introduction of novel wound care products and procedures.

Leading players in the worldwide wound care products market include Johnson & Johnson (J&J), Tyco Healthcare, 3M, ConvaTec, Smith & Nephew, BSN Medical, Kinetic Concepts, Inc., Molnlycke Healthcare, AcryMed, Beiersdorf AG, Carrington Laboratories, Coloplast A/S, C. R. Bard Inc, Derma Sciences, FibroGen, Kensey Nash, LAM Pharmaceutical Corp, Medline, Organogenesis, Ortec International Inc, ProCyte Corporation, and Trumed Technologies. Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and Tyco Healthcare represent the top two players in the worldwide wound care products market, together accounting for over 30% in 2006.

Tempe Police Department Arms Officers with Mobile Communications by In Motion Technology

Tempe Police Department Arms Officers with Mobile Communications by In Motion Technology

In Motion Technology today announced that its solutions have been deployed by the Tempe Arizona Police Department to put reliable, secure, real-time information at the fingertips of its officers in the field, enhance the Department's ability to manage assets in the field, and strengthen law enforcement efforts.

Tempe, Arizona (PRWEB) March 19, 2009

In Motion Technology (http://www. inmotiontechnology. com), the leader in mobile networking technologies that efficiently connect and manage equipment, information and people in the field, today announced that its solutions have been deployed by the Tempe Arizona Police Department (http://www. tempe. gov/Police/) to put reliable, secure, real-time information at the fingertips of its officers in the field, enhance the Department's ability to manage assets in the field, and strengthen law enforcement efforts.

"Today our officers are able to spend less time behind a desk and more time in the community, protecting the public," said Hugh Hallman, Mayor of the City of Tempe (http://www. tempe. gov/elected/hallman. htm), whose 320 officers protect 170,000 residents across 42 square miles and respond to more then 115,000 calls each year. "Our officers appreciate the quick access to information that they could previously only get at their offices, and are anxious for us to give them more applications that can further extend the office to their vehicles. In Motion Technology is helping us improve our operations and enhance public safety."

In Motion's patented onBoard Mobile Gateway (http://www. inmotiontechnology. com/products/obmgateway. html) creates a wireless mobile hotspot in and around each vehicle. The Gateway connects to commercial cellular, 700 MHz, 3G, 4G and a variety of other wireless networks -- and seamlessly switches between networks - to create a continuous, high-bandwidth pipeline of information to and from the vehicle.

The Gateway offers levels of data security and communications reliability that set it apart from other mobile communications solutions. This enables Tempe officers to file reports and access information about suspects, vehicles and property from their patrol cars. They can download mug shots, view databases of "most wanted" criminals, and access other crime fighting resources without returning to the station. This level of knowledge lets officers make split second judgments based on real-time information. The Gateway is designed to enable the Tempe Police Department to easily add the latest network and crime fighting technologies to the vehicle area network. In the future, this will allow the Police Department to deploy mobile surveillance video technology, electronic ticketing, automated license plate recognition and a variety of other devices to enhance officer safety and effectiveness.

The onBoard Mobility Manager (http://www. inmotiontechnology. com/products/obgmanager. html), In Motion's network management system, played a key role in Tempe's decision to work with the company. Kanetix Article Explains How to Protect Your Home from Creditors

Kanetix Article Explains How to Protect Your Home from Creditors

Kanetix releases a new article detailing how Canadians can protect their home from creditors with life insurance, titled “Buying a home? Cover your assets with life insurance”. The article details the differences between mortgage life insurance and term life insurance helping Canadians choose the life insurance policy that best protects their family and home.

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) August 25, 2006

Today, kanetix released a new article detailing how Canadians can protect their home from creditors with life insurance.

“If you own a home, or are planning on buying one, chances are it will be the largest purchase you make in your lifetime.” explains Gregory Ellis, Co-founder of www. kanetix. ca, “This is often the reason why life insurance is recommended—usually mortgage or term life insurance, and is why we thought it important to explain some of the key differences between the two.”

Kanetix’s new article at http://www. kanetix. ca/term-life-insurance (http://www. kanetix. ca/term-life-insurance) titled “Buying a home? Cover your assets with life insurance” details the differences (like price, beneficiaries, the amount of coverage, and length of coverage) between mortgage life and term life insurance helping Canadians choose the life insurance policy that best protects their family and home.

In summary, mortgage insurance pays off the mortgage if one of the people listed on it dies before it’s paid. You pay a premium rate per $1,000 of the mortgage. This rate is the same for everyone in your age bracket because fewer, if any, health questions are asked. Depending on the individual, this will benefit some people more than others.

As your mortgage decreases, so too will your insurance coverage—your premiums however will not. This means that with each payment made to your mortgage, the cost for your mortgage insurance gets more expensive. Coverage stops when the mortgage is paid.

Term life insurance rates are usually more affordable because some medical questions are asked which means the insurer can offer you the best available rate. You pay your premiums based on your healthy status only and not that of the group.

Term life insurance can cover more than just your mortgage. You choose the amount of coverage, so if you want to pay off the mortgage, other debts (like car loans or credit cards), or for the regular living expenses of the surviving family members—you can. You can also determine the length of coverage, like 10 or 20 years.

For more information about the differences between mortgage and term life insurance, read kanetix’s new article or get online quotes to compare rates, visit http://www. kanetix. ca/term-life-insurance (http://www. kanetix. ca/term-life-insurance).

NovaSure Treatment Works Well for the Most Common GYN Problem; Patient Drives Herself Home After Brief Procedure

NovaSure Treatment Works Well for the Most Common GYN Problem; Patient Drives Herself Home After Brief Procedure

Thomas L. Lyons, M. D., of the Center for Women’s Care & Reproductive Surgery in Atlanta was the first in the Southeast to offer NovaSure as a solution to the age-old problem of excessive menstrual bleeding, or menorrhagia. It is designed for pre-menopausal women who have completed their childbearing.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) January 17, 2006

For years, Eleanor Craig, an outdoorswoman, landscaper and former special education teacher, had suffered from severe dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Her periods often lasted three out of four weeks, with painful, debilitating cramps.

Although for days on end she had to alter her routine to manage her problem, she didn’t really want to get hysterectomy.

As she became progressively more anemic and overwhelmed, fortunately she learned of the FDA-approved NovaSure™ endometrial ablation treatment, introduced in 2002.

Endometrial ablation is a clinical procedure that is performed to reduce and ideally eliminate excessive menstrual bleeding by destroying, or ablating, the endometrial lining of the uterus. The patented NovaSure System is a next generation device that uses precisely measured radio frequency energy delivered via a slender, hand-held catheter to remove the endometrial lining.

Thomas L. Lyons, M. D., of the Center for Women’s Care & Reproductive Surgery http://www. thomasllyons. com (http://www. thomasllyons. com) was the first in the Southeast to offer NovaSure as a solution to the age-old problem of excessive menstrual bleeding, or menorrhagia. It is designed for pre-menopausal women who have completed their childbearing.

According to the National Women’s Health Resource Center, a non-profit offering information on women’s health, approximately one in five women suffer from this problem. It accounts for approximately 30% of the estimated 600,000 hysterectomies performed in the U. S. annually.

Major Benefits to Women

The 90-second treatment is significantly shorter than any other endometrial ablation treatment. The average procedure lasts five minutes and is performed without general anesthesia, meaning the patient can quickly resume her daily activities.

An added benefit to women: no medications or other preparation of the uterine lining are necessary prior to the procedure.

Although menorrhagia is not life threatening, it disrupts the lives of 20% of women due to iron-deficiency anemia, fatigue, embarrassing accidents and often severely restricted activity. Women suffering from menorrhagia commonly use more than 20 sanitary napkins or tampons in a single day.

"We're glad to continue offering a variety of choices to women who want less-invasive solutions," said Dr. Lyons http://www. thomasllyons. com (http://www. thomasllyons. com) "Conventional, or 'rollerball' endometrial ablation uses electro surgery and requires general anesthesia. It's difficult and complex, and not widely available because of that. We're always striving for a better way."

In his outstanding career as a laparoscopic GYN surgeon, Dr. Lyons travels around the world and trains other surgeons in the procedures he has developed: Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy (LSH) and the Laparoscopic Burch procedure for urinary stress incontinence. Additionally he has developed many high tech instruments that are used in laparoscopic procedures.

Dr. Lyons is globally recognized as an innovator of minimally-invasive surgery.

“Each of the patients who experienced the NovaSure procedure here has returned to work or normal activity the next day,” said Dr. Lyons. “Eleanor Craig was quite able to drive herself home afterwards.”

Scores of his patients search the web and determine that he is their best solution, coming to him from as far as Tokyo, Moscow and Buenos Aires.

La Rabida Children’s Hospital Presents 14th Annual Symposium on April 9 "A Collaborative Approach to Cerebral Palsy"

The purpose of this year’s symposium is to increase the target audience’s understanding of cerebral palsy with its accompanying disabilities. We will also offer practitioners tools for working with individuals and families to maximize their child’s functional abilities.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) January 21, 2010

This continuing education opportunity is designed for medical and ancillary healthcare professionals and educators.

Cerebral palsy (http://www. larabida. org/page-cerebral-palsy) is a general term used to capture a group of neurological disorders that appear in the first few years of life and affect a child’s ability to coordinate body movements. The condition impacts the lives of some 500,000 Americans.

About the Symposium

The goal of treatment is to help the child become as independent as possible. "Because CP can affect so many aspects of a child's development, treatment requires a team approach. A team approach is an intrinsic part of the way we work with patients and families at La Rabida. We feel very pleased to be able to offer this educational day to professionals working in the Chicagoland area," said Lauren Krause, MS, CCC-SLP, La Rabida’s Chief of Speech-Language Pathology and symposium chair.

Symposium speakers will present across three tracks – Topics in Medical Care; Topics in Therapy; and Topics for Home and Community.

A lunchtime program will highlight the journey of an actor with cerebral palsy and a choreographer who was inspired to work with him and cast him in a dance piece. The collaboration of Tamar Rogoff, a choreographer, and Gregg Mozgala, an actor and writer, has been featured nationally for their groundbreaking work in “Diagnosis of a Faun.” (http://www. larabida. org)

Healthcare Organizations Across the U. S. Switch to OpenDNS, Get Safer, More Reliable Internet and Save Thousands Per Year

Healthcare Organizations Across the U. S. Switch to OpenDNS, Get Safer, More Reliable Internet and Save Thousands Per Year

Healthcare Industry Embraces OpenDNS as DNS Infrastructure, Security Solution

San Francisco (PRWEB) March 18, 2009

OpenDNS, provider of the award-winning service that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced healthcare organizations across the country are switching to OpenDNS in masses for all Web content filtering and DNS infrastructure needs. The OpenDNS customer adoption momentum in the healthcare industry is largely attributed to OpenDNS's superior performance and affordability - OpenDNS is completely free -- and the need for a Web content filter on Wi-Fi networks used by patients to access the Internet. Particularly in these trying economic times, network administrators at healthcare organizations, like all enterprises, seek to cut costs by switching to a Web content filtering solution that doesn't consume thousands of dollars of closely-guarded IT budget. OpenDNS customers in this space include health insurance provider Blue Cross and Blue Shield and hospitals across the United States, including some of the country's largest teaching hospitals.

"In the process of evaluating Web content filters, we received price quotes ranging from $8,000 to as high as $18,000 -- and that was just the fee for the initial start-up. We would also be incurring monthly charges," said Dennis Boisclair, Senior Network Administrator for Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, the teaching hospital of Brown University Medical School. "It was a no-brainer to go with OpenDNS. The transition to OpenDNS was pleasant and well worth it, and I'd absolutely recommend it to others."

Memorial Hospital today uses OpenDNS to protect some 1,600 users from inappropriate and malicious Web content, such as phishing sites and certain types of malware.

The experiences of Women's Hospital in Indianapolis, Lake Martin Community Hospital in Alabama and Good Shepherd Medical Center in Texas were no different. When Good Shepherd network administrators explored solutions to filter inappropriate content on the wireless network used by patients, network administrators experienced sticker shock. Ultimately they opted for OpenDNS because of the cost savings, ease-of-use and performance.

"OpenDNS is an easy-to-use filtering system that just works. It's wonderful," said Jeremy Blankenship, Network Technician for Good Shepherd Medical Center. "Most other solutions we looked at were between $15,000 and $30,000 upfront, and that doesn't include maintenance costs. As a not-for-profit hospital, it's very difficult to find the money for something like that. OpenDNS has saved us from having to buy a filtering solution."

"The ease of use, price, and functionality of OpenDNS made the decision to use the service easy," said Jonas Bowersock, Network Administrator at Lake Martin Community Hospital. "We're very happy with OpenDNS, as both Web filtering and anti-phishing rank high on our priorities list."

Miami, Florida-based Larkin Community Hospital, which employs a full-time staff of more than 500 practitioners, ranks Web content filtering among its top technology priorities. Having used a pricey appliance, and at a point where a new model would cost thousands of dollars, in addition to an annual subscription fee, Larkin IT staff were drawn to OpenDNS's free solution.

"OpenDNS is fantastic and I recommend it to everyone," said Elias Diek, Network Administrator for Larkin Community Hospital. "It's more responsive than our previous DNS service, it saves us thousand per year and helps us to control all of our computers with ease using the Web content filtering dashboard."

In addition to the cost savings OpenDNS provides, the service is a scalable security solution for large healthcare organizations with multiple locations. Before making the switch to OpenDNS, Regence BlueCross and BlueShield network administrators sought a Web content filtering tool to deploy throughout the not-for-profit health care company, which serves 3 million members in Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Like lots of other large organizations seeking to increase network security, Regence BlueCross and BlueShield previously used a pricey Blue Coat appliance as its sole filtering solution, but it was lacking services that OpenDNS provides for free.

"OpenDNS gives us more layered protection for services that Blue Coat doesn't proxy for," says Charles Koenig, network administrator for Regence Blue Cross and Blue Shield. "Anti-Phishing is a big concern for us and since switching to OpenDNS our number of security related incidents has decreased."

About OpenDNS
OpenDNS is the leading provider of free security and infrastructure services that make the Internet safer through integrated Web content filtering, anti-phishing and DNS. OpenDNS services enable consumers and network administrators to secure their networks from online threats, reduce costs and enforce Internet-use policies. OpenDNS is used today by millions of users and organizations around the world. For more information about OpenDNS, please visit: www. opendns. com

Mental Health Awareness and Education Website Offers Free Information for Veterans and Their Families Dealing With Suicide and Depression

Mental Health Awareness and Education Website Offers Free Information for Veterans and Their Families Dealing With Suicide and Depression

With Congress wrestling with mental health funding issues and increasing public awareness of soldiers' suicide rates and depression, MentalHelp. net offers free online information from mental health experts.

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) May 19, 2008

MentalHelp. net, a site dedicated to educating and informing the public, has announced that additional resources are available on the site for soldiers, their families and anyone with questions about how the Iraq war is impacting suicide rates and depression among military personnel.

"The soldiers, their families and the public are increasingly concerned about suicide (http://www. mentalhelp. net/poc/center_index. php? id=9&cn=9), depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other mental health issues related to the Iraq war," Mark Dombeck, Ph. D., founder of MentalHelp. net said. "The number of Iraq war veterans needing mental health (http://www. mentalhelp. net) care continues to rise sharply."

"MentalHelp. net is an excellent resource for finding information on certain mental illnesses and disorders. MentalHelp. net's mission is to help educate the public about mental illness and the importance of treatment," he added. "Mental health is an integral part of health care, but is often overlooked because of inaccessibility. Many people are not sure if they need help, and that is where the material at MentalHelp. net comes in. From symptoms of certain mental illnesses and disorders, to living with someone who has a mental illness, MentalHelp. net is an excellent free resource for anything regarding mental illnesses."

Natalie Staats Reiss, Ph. D and an editor at the site added, "Many soldiers coming home from war are in desperate need of help from a therapist, but many think they do not need the help. MentalHelp. Net has a plethora of articles about disorders and mental illnesses that may be affecting veterans. Two common ones are post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression (http://www. mentalhelp. net/poc/center_index. php? id=5&cn=5)."

"There are a variety of other issues that can arise when a soldier returns from war, and MentalHelp. net has information on these as well. These articles can help not only the veterans themselves, but the families of these veterans. Family members can access hundred of articles explaining a mental illness or disorder and learn the symptoms so they can help their loved one" Riess explained.

"PTSD is very common among veterans and can be treated in a variety of ways. Some can be helped by therapy visits, and others can be helped by medication. Recent statistics show that one in five soldiers returning from war suffer from PTSD. Left untreated, serious consequences can occur," added Dombeck. "MentalHelp. net strives to get the word out to the public about the importance of treatment for these issues and get our veterans the help that they need."

MentalHelp. net has a therapist finder feature on their website that allows anyone to search for a therapist in their area based on the issue for which they would be seen. Veterans and family members alike can use this feature to locate a mental health professional who will be able to provide the services needed. Other features on the MentalHelp. net website are question and answer sections, an online mental help support community (http://community. mentalhelp. net/) where people can give and receive advice on certain mental illnesses, and blogs written by mental health professionals.

"With all of the information that MentalHelp. net has to offer, help for veterans is just a click away. By spending a little time on the website, you can read about a mental illness, read about the symptoms, and find a mental health professional in your area," Dombeck said. "This free resource is extremely valuable and easy to use in order to get our veterans the help they need--and deserve."

Motorsports Sponsorship Spending to Total $3.37 Billion in 2010

North American-based companies will spend an estimated $3.37 billion to sponsor motorsports teams, tracks and sanctioning bodies this year, up 2.1 percent from the $3.3 billion spent in '09, according to IEG Sponsorship Report, the world's leading authority on sponsorship.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 10, 2010

North American-based companies will spend an estimated $3.37 billion to sponsor motorsports teams, tracks and sanctioning bodies this year, up 2.1 percent from the $3.3 billion spent in '09, according to IEG Sponsorship Report, the world's leading authority on sponsorship.

While the projection lags IEG SR's 3.4 percent increase for the overall sponsorship industry and 2.8 percent rise for sports properties, it is welcome news following the six percent decline in motorsports spending from '08 to '09.

"The motorsports category has suffered more than many others recently, as its high cost of entry in many cases fell victim to increased scrutiny over corporate marketing expenditures and questions about return on investment," said William Chipps, IEG Sponsorship Report's senior editor.

Although many companies opted out of racing during or following the '09 season--Allstate Insurance Co., Brown-Forman Corp.'s Jack Daniel's and Beam Global Spirits & Wine, Inc.'s Jim Beam, are among those who dropped out of NASCAR--there are some bright spots.

Most notably, the Indy Racing League late last year brought on Phillips-Van Heusen Corp.'s Izod clothing brand as title sponsor through a new six-year partnership.

And despite the large number of sponsor defections, a number of NASCAR teams have been able to renew, and in some cases, expand existing partnerships.

For example, Aaron's, Inc. expanded its primary sponsorship of a Michael Waltrip Racing Sprint Cup team for six additional races, while Diageo North America, Inc.'s Crown Royal brand extended its partnership with Roush Fenway Racing, becoming primary sponsor of the Matt Kenseth-driven No. 17 car for 35 Sprint Cup Series races this year.

NASCAR itself recently brought on two new sponsors, both in nontraditional categories: movie theater advertising firm Screenvision Cinema Network, LLC and Drive4COPD, a health awareness campaign for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease funded by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

PGA Resort Scores an Eagle on Airline Flight Information Service for Guests

PGA Resort Scores an Eagle on Airline Flight Information Service for Guests

Real-time flight departure information adds greater guest convenience and increased club business.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) November 12, 2008

Located 12 miles from Palm Beach International Airport (PBIA), PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, FL caters to a guest list of golfing enthusiasts who travel to this luxurious AAA Four Diamond resort from all points on the globe by air. Its list of amenities, from 90 spectacular holes of golf and an unrivaled spa facility, to seven highly rated onsite restaurants and lounges, attracts not only golfers, but families, couples, corporations and business travelers. Self-described as the "Celebrated Grand Champion of Florida Golf Resorts," the property delivers on its promise of a world-class experience.

Flight info adds to 4-Diamond service
With so many guests arriving and departing via PBIA, the resort offers guests its own onsite limo service to the airport which began a logical step to look into other travel options that might help simplify their guests' airline travel (http://flytesystems. com/FlyteBoard. html? Campaign=PRWebPGAResortNov122008) experience. According to the property's Director of Marketing, Brett Laiken, that was when they discovered FlyteBoard, a real-time flight information (http://flytesystems. com/hospitality. html? Campaign=PRWebPGAResortNov122008) display subscription service by Flyte Systems.

"At the PGA National Resort & Spa, our focus is on making our guests' visits memorable, and that begins from the moment they deplane to the moment they board our limo for their return home," Laiken said. "With FlyteBoard, our guests no longer have to guess whether or not their flights will depart on time. A quick glance at the FlyteBoard high-resolution screen tells them whether they can linger a little longer, or if it really is time to go."

According to Laiken, PGA National installed FlyteBoard in May in the property's state-of-the-art Business Center after researching several options. Since then, he's seen a substantial increase in the number of guests who visit the Business Center as they prepare to depart. "Guests rely on the live airline flight information (http://flytesystems. com/AboutFlyte. html? Campaign=PRWebPGAResortNov122008)," Laiken noted. "It adds confidence to their travel day and that is a valuable guest service."

Real-time Flight Information
What sets Flyte Systems apart from PC-based applications is the ability to post accurate, real-time airline flight arrival and departure information (http://flytesystems. com/FlyteChannel. html? Campaign=PRWebPGAResortNov122008), not FAA-regulated scheduled departure times that do not list delays caused by air traffic control, aircraft maintenance, crew availability and weather.

Flyte Systems offers a suite of products that serve the traveling public: FlyteBoard, FlytePass, FlyteChannel and FlyteTouch.
FlyteBoard is a wall, floor or ceiling mounted high-definition, flat panel screen for lobbies, restaurants, bars and other public areas, displaying flight information for one or more airports.  FlytePass combines FlyteTouch with free, secure boarding pass printing and can be provided stand alone or neatly packaged in an optional all wood kiosk or integrated metal kiosk, to match your décor.  FlyteChannel permits guests to view live airport flight information conveniently and comfortably from their in-room television.  FlyteTouch enables individual guests to search flight information using an interactive touch screen that displays real-time flight arrivals and departures for one or more airports.

Plastic chair or hip club?
Laiken points out that when guests discover their flights have been delayed or cancelled, they go to the front desk and postpone their scheduled airport limo ride and then head into the PGA National's popular iBar, the chic lounge located next to the Business Center. "When guests know they have a choice of going to the airport and waiting out their delayed flight sitting in a plastic chair at a fast food restaurant, or relaxing at iBar, there is no contest."

Flyte Systems applications are often used by properties to generate increased revenue streams with innovative marketing approaches to the distressed traveler. For tips on how to generate revenue by providing guests with Flyte Systems airline information, please log on to the Flyte Systems website at www. flytesystems. com.

AP9 SimplyYou Reminds the Public on the Benefits of Exercise

AP9 SimplyYou Reminds the Public on the Benefits of Exercise

AP9 Simply You provides members with excellent savings on health, fitness, and beauty purchases.

Norwalk, CT (PRWEB) July 24, 2007

Over the years, people have always looked for the equivalent of a "get rich" scheme when it comes to having a good body. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts when it comes to getting into shape and losing weight. Eating healthy and regular exercise are the only ways to sculpt that perfect body, reports AP9 SimplyYou, a membership program that offers significant benefits in healthcare, discounts, security, personal property and personals.

One of the main reasons that people exercise is to lose weight, reports AP9 Simply You. But losing weight is only one of the many benefits that people can gain from regular physical activity. From improving quality of life to reducing stress, exercise adds years to one's life, gives people more energy, and helps improve self-esteem. For those looking to improve their quality of life, exercise is the answer.

Whether it's a jog around the neighborhood or taking a yoga class at the gym, an enjoyable workout is within reach for everyone. The right exercise doesn't have to be time-consuming or difficult, either. Regardless of the type of exercise, constant physical activity is one of the most important aspects of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. That's why AP9 SimplyYou offers these reminders on the benefits of exercising.

--Lose weight. By burning calories, exercise helps people achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Burning calories can also reduce body fat -- increasing energy levels and improving one's appearance and confidence. The combination of a healthy diet and regular exercise is often the best solution for those looking to shed a few pounds.

--Reduce cholesterol levels and the risk of developing diabetes. Exercise can reduce cholesterol in an overall effort to prevent heart attacks. Also, people who stay in good shape are far less likely to be diagnosed with diabetes, since frequent exercise can lower one's blood sugar level. According to the American Diabetes Association, just half an hour a day of moderate physical activity, coupled with a 5-10% decrease in body weight, resulted in a 58% reduction in diabetes in a study of people with pre-diabetes.

--Reduce pain and stress. Exercise stimulates the production of endorphins that produce feelings of well-being and help people relax. Whether it's a ten-mile bike ride or thirty minutes on the treadmill, releasing pent-up energy can be a great way to get over an argument with a friend or a frustrating day at the office.

--Strengthen bones and muscle. Frequent exercise, especially weightlifting, helps build up strength and tone the body. From an appearance standpoint alone, lifting weights and running can help give people the body that they desire. Physical activity can also prevent the bone-weakening disease osteoporosis.

In the constant grind that is life, going to the gym may seem impossible sometimes. But finding the time to exercise can help improve your confidence, happiness and quality of life, reports AP9 Simply You.
