Three new members were inducted locally. New Rotarians joining in August are MaryAnn Marotta, manager of Enterprise Car Rental; Jerry Cooper, a retired manager; and Sean McGill, manager of the Fixed Base Operations at the Fernandina Airport.

The Florida Park Service commended the Rotary Club for providing 300 fishing rods and reels to area youth. The club also completed a roadside cleanup along the Amelia Island Parkway with Explorer Scouts.

Consumers no longer need to go through the lengthy and often expensive process of scheduling multiple doctor appointments with several co-pays to get basic wellness tests such as a heart risk assessment. Instead they can select up to four basic lab tests online, starting at $54.95, using the webLAB wizard located in the Google Health Services Directory. The tests consumers order are conducted in a manner that fully complies with state and federal regulations. In addition, test results are delivered within a few days and can be stored in the consumer's Google Health account.

"webLAB makes it safe, easy and affordable for people to directly order lab tests online, then store and track the results electronically on Google Health," said John Eastman, director of business development for PWN. The consumer then has their blood sample drawn at a local lab and a result is produced. A PWN representative follows up with the consumer in the event a critical value is presented in the result.

The rates of Lyme disease -- and the serious, often debilitating symptoms it can cause -- have been rising steadily across the U. S. and throughout the world. In fact, health experts from the Wildlife Conservation Society just released a report listing 12 pathogens, including the agents behind avian flu, Ebola, cholera, and Lyme disease, which are likely to invade new regions as a result of global climate change. Other experts are reporting that the ticks that carry the Lyme disease bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, once thought to be transmitted only by deer and mice, can also be spread by chipmunks and other small animals.

With roughly 20,000 new cases reported each year to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne infection in the United States. Yet Lyme disease is hardly at the top of many researchers' rosters, says Dr. Harriet Kotsoris, neurologist and medical advisor to Time for Lyme, Inc., a research, education and advocacy group that along with the Lyme Disease Association recently endowed the first Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research Center at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City dedicated to the study of chronic Lyme disease.

Why? For one thing, while everyone agrees that rates of Lyme infection continue to rise, there's no consensus on why they're rising. Since the early 90s, the annual number of reported cases has more than doubled. This reflects a growing problem which may only represent the tip of the iceberg. Both testing and surveillance methods are inefficient, which leaves thousands undiagnosed and therefore uncounted. To further complicate matters, many experts argue that Lyme disease is over-reported (others say it's under-reported), and most observers agree that there are significant differences in the way Lyme disease is diagnosed and tracked in various states in the U. S.

Another topic of debate is the disease itself -- more specifically, the way it can manifest itself in the months and years after the initial infection. Many experts argue that chronic or long-term Lyme can produce a long list of symptoms, including neurological and psychiatric problems, while others contend that the condition doesn't even exist. Just last year, the New England Journal of Medicine published an article disputing the existence of chronic Lyme -- and essentially ignoring more than 19,000 scientific studies on tick-borne illnesses in the process.

What's more, Lyme disease is only one of a whole host of diseases that are essentially competing for researchers' attention -- and dollars, says Dr. Kotsoris. "Lyme disease is just one of many serious diseases, and unfortunately, many of them get a lot more attention from the media -- the research facilities -- and the pharmaceutical companies -- than Lyme does."

In response, Time for Lyme has made substantial donations to several institutions and individuals, all of whom are conducting important research in a few different areas:

Better Antibiotics
Dr. Benjamin J. Luft, the Edmond Pellegrino Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York (SUNY), Stony Brook, is on a quest to find better antibiotic therapies for Lyme disease. We know that the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria can remain viable in animals even after treatment with penicillin, tetracycline and macrolide antibiotics. Dr. Luft and his colleagues have discovered that the microbes possess something known as efflux pumps in their cell membranes, which help eliminate antibiotics and other toxins from the bacteria's body and thus help them survive. Research is underway to determine the mechanisms of resistance and whether two already approved antibiotics could block these efflux pumps and allow antibiotics to build up inside the bacteria, thus speeding their death.

Chronicling Chronic Lyme
Dr. John Aucott, Principal Investigator for the Lyme Disease Research Foundation of Maryland, is conducting a longitudinal study in collaboration with scientists at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The clinical research team will examine the course of infection with the Lyme organism and the resulting illness from the initial rash to the chronic persistent stage. His objectives: to measure risk factors, symptom pattern and severity, and immune system response over time in patients with chronic Lyme symptoms.

Treating Persistent Symptoms
Dr. Armin Alaedini, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, is conducting research to determine the relevance and role of the body's immune system in chronic Lyme. To better understand how to help patients whose symptoms persist after antibiotic treatment, Dr. Alaedini is analyzing blood and spinal fluid for biomarkers that might correlate with various symptoms of the disease.

Research like this is not just important, says Dr. Kotsoris: It's absolutely essential. "We need to keep pushing for answers so that we can minimize and even eliminate these infections and their devastating effects," she says.

If you love hot peppers and spicy foods in general, you're about to love them a whole lot more. Several recent studies have shown that (capsaicin), the natural chemical that puts the "HOT" in hot peppers, may actually prevent the growth of certain types of cancer.

In particular, there have been several clinical studies conducted in Japan and China that showed natural capsaicin directly inhibits the growth of leukemic cells. That means diseased cells can actually be stopped in their tracks by the introduction of capsaicin.

Although these studies used pure capsaicin directly injected into isolated diseased cells in a laboratory setting, scientists have also concluded that daily consumption of hot peppers (thus capsaicin), may actually prevent certain types of cancer.

In fact, scientists have long studied the low cancer rates of South American countries. It is widely regarded by medical experts that this low cancer rate may be tied to the large amounts of capsaicin in their diets. Throughout South America, instestinal, stomach, and colon cancer rates are very low compared to the United States. Furthermore, nearly every main dish in their normal diet contains some form of capsaicin based food -- particularly hot cayenne and jalapeno peppers.

Aside from it's potential cancer inhibiting power, capsaicin has also been clinically proven to prevent blood clots that lead to stroke and heart disease. So it would make sense that the thermal heat action of capsaicin in the bloodstream could effect sick blood cells.

Furthermore, this natural heat producing chemical is also known to fight chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, allergy symptoms, and headaches. In fact, capsaicin has been clinically proven to fight a whole list of ailments including arthritis pain, inflammatory skin disorders, certain types of herpes, and instestinal disorders.

Capsaicin is mainly found in hot pepper plants from the Capsicum Frutescens family. While most varieties are found in South America, there are also Capsicum varieties in Africa, India, and even China. Yet not all Capsicum pepper plants are hot. For example, Paprika is from the capsicum family yet it's mild at best. On the other hand, paprika's cousin, Cayenne is scorching hot. It all depends on the heat factor within a particular plant.

Hot peppers are so unique, they even have their own heat scale known as "Scoville Heat Units". Mostly used in the food industry, the Scoville heat scale is regarded as the most efficient way to measure the true hotness of a pepper plant. Different pepper extracts have different Scoville factors -- so some are better suited for certain uses than others.

In large scale processed food operations, manufacturers get their capsaicin from a special pepper extract known as "Oleoresin Capsicum". This capsicum extract is used to boost the pepper taste in large amounts of food without adding the "pepper cost". Oleoresin capsicum is so concentrated, one 8 ounce cup of this extract could spice up 10,000 gallons of spagetti sauce.

America has been lulled into believing that doctor-prescribed pills are the answer to what ails our children. Kids used to be told, “speed kills” only to be prescribed amphetamine class drugs to control symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). When did this contradiction become the norm? How do we explain to our children that they shouldn’t try crack cocaine or meth-amphetamine when they are consuming similar agents daily as a normal course of treatment?

The overuse of prescription drugs such as stimulants, tranquilizers, sleeping pills and anti-depressants is the focus of Label Me Sane, a California not-for-profit organization. Label Me Sane, was established by Alesandra Rain and Andrea Crocker after recognizing that few drug education lectures provided the truth about the war on drugs.

Rain, a survivor of addiction to the anti-anxiety class of psychiatric drugs, is angered about the widespread use of psychotropic and behavioral drugs. She contends that the general public does not know the true history of illegal drugs and their connection to past psychiatric use. Rain claims that most illegal drugs were used in the psychiatric profession for years but were discarded after the dangers were recognized. “Cocaine and heroin were considered the ‘wonder drugs’ of their time, just like many of the new mood altering drugs marketed today. Explains Rain.

“Most parents feel they are helping their children by drugging them.” States Rain. “Parents buy on to the belief that prescription medications are safe, and have no idea they are putting their children at risk.” Rain continues.

“It is a known fact that amphetamine based drugs can cause depression, delusions, weight loss, insomnia, anxiety, and tics (repetitive movement) and a whole range of other complications.” Warns Rain. “Yet when these adverse effects surface, frequently other mood stabilizers are prescribed to treat what is mistakenly concluded as other forms of mental illness, rather than the fact that the drugs are causing the symptoms.” explains Rain.

Over 8.5 million children in the United States have been prescribed drugs to treat ADHD while the underlying causes may remain untreated. Allergies, nutritional deficiencies, lead poisoning and various health conditions mimic the identical symptoms of many mental disorders yet our society seems quick to turn to drugs as the only solution.

“My symptoms of depression and anxiety stemmed in large part to a severe vitamin and mineral deficiency. Instead of treating me with proper nutrition, I was put on a cocktail of drugs that made me feel like I was no longer living. The side effects were horrific and I thought I was losing my mind. Once I was off all the drugs and dealt with the underlying nutritional deficiencies, the depression and anxiety immediately lifted. It saddens and angers me that untold numbers of people may suffer the same road needlessly.” Rain concluded.

Heroin and Cocaine were on the market for decades before they were deemed unsafe. How long will the psychotropic drugs be prescribed before the reality about their devastating effects are recognized? Acclaimed chef, author and Oxfam Ambassador Kylie Kwong is challenging Australians to imagine life cooking recipes with only one vegetable, as part of her support of the international aid agency’s new ‘Stop Hunger (https://www. oxfam. org. au/donate/current-appeals/stop-hunger-appeal)’.

“Many poor communities around the world are surviving on only one type of vegetable and are at severe risk of hunger and malnutrition because they do not have access to the diverse range of produce that we take for granted in Australia,” Ms Kwong said. 

“I passionately believe that by providing people with the skills and knowledge to grow and prepare nutritious food, we can stop hunger.

“Oxfam Australia is helping children eat a healthy balanced diet, and helping local farmers and fishermen generate an income so that they can provide for their families.

Oxfam Australia Executive Director Andrew Hewett said the Stop Hunger Appeal aimed to raise almost $2 million that will help Oxfam ensure that people in poor countries such as Timor-Leste have enough to eat.

“Before Oxfam started working in Lontale, a village in Timor-Leste, people in the community relied on a single source of food, often just having the choice between rice, maize or pumpkin,” Mr Hewett said.

“Oxfam has been training people in gardening and nutrition and how to sell their produce at local markets, so that they can now grow a variety of vegetables which they can eat or sell allowing them to escape the poverty cycle.”

In Timor-Leste, over one-third of the population regularly experience food shortages at a time of the year known as the "hungry season'.

While this period typically lasts two to three months before communities harvest maize and rice in March and April, late and insufficient rainfalls, locusts, and environmental degradation are making periods of food shortage even longer.

According to the World Food Program, in Timor-Leste approximately 47 per cent of children under the age of five are chronically malnourished.
