Strength for Caring, an online resource for family caregivers, is pleased to announce new resources to celebrate National Stress Awareness Month, including a Stress Reduction message board, articles on reducing stress, time-management tips and worksheets, and resources for balancing day-to-day responsibilities.
Many family caregivers suffer from chronic stress and develop their own healthcare concerns, even while caring for others. In the United States alone, 50 million people provide care for a chronically ill, disabled, or aged family member. A recent report by Evercare and the National Alliance for Caregiving found that caregivers’ health is suffering due to their caregiving responsibilities, and the resulting stress.

As LLuminari expert Dr. Norman Rosenthal explains, “Often, when faced with the stress of taking care of a very ill or aging family member, a caregiver may neglect his or her own health. Bingeing on junk food, smoking, lounging around are all means that the stressed-out caregiver may use to relax. Of course, the short term relief from these tactics is horribly outweighed by their long-term consequences.”

Many caregivers find themselves working full-time jobs, caring for children, and caring for their aging parents. This triple-whammy of responsibility can lead to increased stress, restless sleep, missed doctor appointments (on the part of the caregiver), and feeling “burnt out.” Without help, this stress can lead to disabling conditions, including depression.

Dr. Vicki Rackner says that sometimes, setting caregiving limits and boundaries can reduce stress, “With boundaries, we can find personal renewal while caregiving, and find the strength to cope when life gets chaotic.”

Strength for Caring has published an entire section on how to reduce stress, manage multiple responsibilities, and finding time to care for you as well as your loved one.
