Egoscue Method Comes to Albany, NY Area!

The Egoscue Method, a revolutionary, drug-less form of exercise therapy, is coming to the Capital region. By focusing on a client's posture and movement, Egoscue therapists are able to help ease chronic aches and pains.

Many of us suffer from chronic pains of some sort. Most health statistics bear this out, claiming that at least 80% of us will suffer from low-back pain at some point in our lives. These pains seem to be a rite of passage, but this does not have to be so.

Many years ago in San Diego, California, a former Vietnam vet named Pete Egoscue was told that the injury he suffered while in war would result in a permanent physical limitation. But Egoscue had other ideas and set out on a path of self-education including anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics. He learned how to rehabilitate himself, and at the same time The Egoscue Method of exercise therapy was born.

Egoscue established a clinic in the San Diego area, and has been responsible for helping thousands of people with problems that were otherwise labeled untreatable or in need of surgery. Now, The Egoscue Method is making waves in the Capital region. Nathan Mosher, CSCS, owner of Pinnacle Performance in Troy and a part-time fitness specialist, is bringing "The Method" to central New Yorkers. Mosher has been a fitness trainer for several years and is currently a full-time student in physical therapy at the Sage Graduate School in Troy.

"I see many similarities between Pete's methods and exercise programs that physical therapists use, but there are some unique differences", says Mosher. "While physical therapists try to correct local conditions or problems, 'The Method' focuses on the entire body. For example, the pain a person feels as strain in the shoulder may actually be caused by a dysfunction in the hip joint."

Mosher went on to explain the background of the exercises, called "E-cises" in Egoscue terms, are different from what is currently popular in fitness circles.

"Well, for one thing, some of the e-cises are similar to yoga poses, classical stretching, isometrics, and other methods. But some are made up on-the-spot to treat specific conditions. And it is in the application of the e-cises that is the greatest difference between this and other forms of exercise."

Egoscue practitioners can tell if there is a problem with alignment and posture while watching a person stand and walk. Fixing poor alignment of the skeleton involves stretching and functional exercises meant to promote posture and the small muscles that control it.

"I try to help the body get back to the alignment it was supposed to be in all along", said Mosher.

The Egosuce clinic claims a 94% success rate with helping clients. "The Method", as it's known to those familiar with it, has been used by NFL player Junior Seau, and golf legends Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, among others.
