The New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NMCADV), a non-profit organization representing 25 member programs serving domestic violence victim survivors and their children throughout the state, is the charity beneficiary of an upcoming all-female 5k fun run called Get Your Sassy Back.
The event will take place in the Village of Los Ranchos on August 2nd 2009; registration begins at 7:00 am and the run starts at 8:00 am.
According to Coleen Widell, President of the NMCADV Board of Directors, "Get Your Sassy Back provides an opportunity for women athletes to support victim survivors of domestic violence as well as the critical work of the Coalition. We are anticipating a large turn-out of walking and running teams from shelters and service programs, law enforcement, medical and legal professionals and individual athletes who have a heart for our work."
People who are interested in participating can register online at www. thatsawrapevents. com under Sassy 5k Fun Run. The cost is $30, with $5 of each registration going to NMCADV. Questions about the event can be directed to Pamela Ghoreishi at 505-489-9484.
All ages are welcome to participate in the 5K but no strollers, bicycles, dogs or roller-bladers will be permitted on the course. Participants will receive an event T-shirt, and to keep runners and walkers well-hydrated, the course will provide water stations.
In addition to the run, the event will also feature live entertainment, a health and fitness expo, a fashion show presented by Brooks Running Apparel and the ABQ Running Shop, a massage therapist, creative Sassy awards and a kid's corner organized by Moveabout Learning Workshops.
Get Your Sassy Back kicks off the Coalition's 9th annual statewide training conference, entitled "Tools for Change." The conference, which is open to the public, will be held August 3-5 at Isleta Casino and Resort. The Coalition will offer service providers, advocates, social workers, case managers, law enforcement officials, legal professionals, the medical community, and families of victims a comprehensive training program consisting of three days of keynote presentations, state-of-the-art workshops and information booths.
Since its inception in 1981, New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence works to achieve a coordinated local, regional and statewide response to domestic violence. The Coalition serves as a clearinghouse for information and referrals and collaborates with agencies and advocates in the areas of program development, public policy, education and funding proposals. The Coalition also offers various training programs, legislation and policy advocacy, technical assistance and a lending library.
