Ergonomics Programs Cut Costs

Los Angeles, CA, December 4, 2002 – The National Ergonomics Conference and Exposition—the “NECE”—will host demonstrations and seminars on ergonomics on December 9 (preconference workshops) and December 10-12 (conference and expo), 2002, at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, NV. Entrance is free with preregistration on NECE’s web site, www. ergoexpo. com.

The term “ergonomics” is the study of the relationship between the human being and work demands. “Your company’s profitability is directly linked to its level of productivity,” and, “Through workplace-specific ergonomics education, [you can]… increase productivity, reduce injuries, improve product and service quality and grow your company’s bottom line.” (Source: Ergoexpo. com.)

For example, on back pain, the American Chiropractic Association says that thirty-one million Americans have low back pain at any given time. Half of all working Americans admit to having back symptoms each year. A third of all Americans over age 18 had a back problem in the past five years severe enough for them to seek professional help. The cost of this care is estimated to be a staggering $50 Billion yearly just for the easily identified costs. Clearly, using ergonomics to reduce back pain could save money, and it could save those at risk a lot of strain, pain or agony. For a healthy back, and to reduce strain and fatigue at the end of a workday, you can start with good posture and full back support when you sit. (Source: See, e. g., Mayoclinic. com, American Chiropractic Association, www. exxoscape. com.) Of course, before using any health regimen or product, you should consult with your health care professional on what is best for you.

A new company, eXXoScape Corporation, will attend the ErgoExpo for the first time to show and network with its new product, the eXXoScape(TM) full back support. eXXoScape is designed to fix the problems with most chairs—-they don’t support both the lumbar curve and proper upper back alignment with good posture. eXXoScape has a separate inflatable support for each of the upper and lower back; these supports go inside a fleece case with straps that adjust to fit just about any chair. Details are on www. exxoscape. com.

Choosing to have an ergonomics program for workers does not have to be expensive. For example, for each individual, a company can save about $540 by adding a back support to a chair they already have instead of buying a high-end chair, such as the Aeron(R) chair, which costs about $600.00 new. The eXXoScape(TM) back support costs under $60. High-end chairs also aren’t portable and don’t always do the job. Aeron’s(R) manufacturer has just started selling a low back support—with no extra upper back support—for over $100. That lumbar support is designed to be added to its already expensive chairs, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

So for 10 employees, the cost of new high-end, full-back-support chairs would likely be over $6,000 (with tax, S&H, etc.), but putting a full back support on chairs the company already has would be just over $600. Without full back support for its employees, the company could suffer the losses of lower productivity of employees with back pain, lost time for medical visits, and related medical expenses; or in the extreme case a company may lose an employee altogether with the related costs of hiring and training another person.
