The deadline for submissions to the Career Education Scholarship Fund is May 15th, 2009. The scholarship is not renewable.
"When mulling over the possibilities for establishing a scholarship in Del's name, we immediately thought of Brown College, as many of our employees here at Dakota Radio Group, including myself and our General Manager, Mark Swendsen, are Brown grads," said Paul Rollie, Program Director. "Brown College has long-earned a reputation for training solid, quality broadcasters…instruction second to none, that comes from experienced radio professionals and is set in an actual radio station "environment." To help future broadcasters realize their dream, well, we couldn't think of a better way to pay tribute to our colleague and friend, Del Fisher."
Del Fisher was the embodiment of a true radio broadcaster. He began his career at the ripe old age of 14 at KOLY-AM in Mobridge, South Dakota. What began as a part time job soon led to a very successful career. Fisher spent many years at KGFX in Pierre, South Dakota where he was the morning announcer and Farm Director. He had a great love for people and genuinely cared for those in the community. Over the years, Fisher built a unique relationship with his listeners and the community. If he heard that someone was suffering from health problems or having trouble, he would contact the person in charge of the fundraiser and promote it on the air, interviewing the organizers and letting his audience know there was someone in their area in need of help.
Del was detailed in his on air presentation, constantly keeping local listeners up to date by collecting area rainfall amounts from other listeners and farmers in the area…things like rain, humidity readings, temperature, and wind speed are all elements that affect both agriculture and outdoor activities in central South Dakota and Del took great care to make sure his listeners were informed. Fisher was named the South Dakota "Broadcaster of the Year" in 1999, an honor he truly cherished.
The Career Education Scholarship Fund is a non-profit foundation that was incorporated in 1998 with the mission to help students enrich their lives by attaining a quality education in their selected discipline.
