Melville, NY (PRWEB) March 27, 2006
Approximately $600,000 in scholarships will be awarded by Katharine Gibbs School in Melville to enrolled students showing academic achievement in their course of study during the current academic year. This marks the highest dollar amount for merit scholarships the school has ever presented to students. The scholarships will be based on student GPAs and will be distributed at the end of each school quarter. By October 2006, between 600 and 800 students within the current student body across all disciplines will have been presented merit awards to supplement school expenses and tuition while enrolled at the school.
The scholarship program began in July 2005; this marks its first full year at Katharine Gibbs in Melville. The program will help for students enrolled in degree programs in subsequent years. The number of students and amounts of the scholarships will vary, and 200-250 are expected to receive awards each quarter. “These scholarships help students dramatically in their payment of tuition and books, and allow them to be rewarded for their academic achievement at the college,” said Patricia Martin, president of Katharine Gibbs School in Melville. “There are excellent scholars that deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments, and the scholarships will allow us to reward their effort and commitment. Katharine Gibbs in Melville is dedicated to supporting its students in making education affordable so they do not have to put their dreams on hold simply because they are unable to get funding.”
Because the scholarship is based on GPA, it is an ideal way to reward students’ day-to-day excellence as they pursue their degrees and certificates. The awards, coupled with other sources of financial aid (http://www. gibbsmelville. edu/fa. asp) for those who qualify, can strengthen the incentive for students to keep grades up and stay in school and complete their program.
