Nail Biting & Why it’s One of the Worst Bad Habits

Nail Biting & Why it’s One of the Worst Bad Habits

Nail biting is often attributed to being nervous or anxious, but it may lead to much more serious complications. Not to mention an unhealthy nail bed, biting your nails may lead to soreness and even infection. There are a few tips that may help to avoid nail biting and break one of the world’s worst bad habits.

Huntington Beach, CA (PRWEB) March 2, 2006

The day before a big exam, tax time and filling out tax forms or an important job interview. What do all of these things have in common? They may ignite nerves or a feeling of uneasiness. Quite often, individuals who feel this way may turn to biting their nails as a reaction to the mood. This is an unattractive bad habit, but also has the potential to cause serious problems to the nail biter. Among the concerns include damaged cuticles, infection or redness and swelling.

If nail biting has become a bad habit over the years, the best way to cope may be to wear gloves until the nervousness subsides. In addition, women who paint their fingernails may be less likely to bite them because it would ruin the appearance. An at-home manicure kit will improve the nail’s appearance greatly and will deter any biting for fear of ruining the hand’s perfectly groomed appearance. If you’ve ever heard the saying that ‘busy hands are happy hands,’ then you have probably already tried to put it to the test. By taking up a new hobby, such as painting, drawing, sewing or computers, you may be able to take your mind off of biting your nails if you can stay busy.

Any nervous reaction, such as nail biting or cracking gum, can be remedied with a little self control combined with a busy schedule. Whatever takes your mind off of nail biting, even if it is watching a film or taking photos, may help to get your hands back into shape. Some individuals, who have a more serious problem with nail biting and have tried almost everything to kick their habit, may find that adding band-aids to every fingertip will help them to prevent biting while also keeping the nail bed from getting infected. If fingernails are too low, they will expose the bed and possibly even cause bleeding. If the skin is broken, dirt can get inside and may lead to infection.

If the urge for nail biting continues, individuals with a serious nervous problem may need to seek professional medical advice. A qualified physician will be able to determine what cause of action, if any, is needed in order to cure the desire to bite your nails.
