SerbiaÂ’s Medical Market improves steadily

Serbia has overcome many of the political and economic problems it faced following the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. Although challenges still exist for the Serbian government, a number of developments including institutional reforms and the union of Serbia and Montenegro as a loose federation have assisted Serbia in strengthening its economy and political stability. The government is Western-leaning and actively seeking membership of the EU, NATO and the World Trade Organisation.

The healthcare system however, remains in a poor condition. It is over-resourced in terms of medical personnel and much of its equipment is outdated. Nevertheless, improvements are expected in the near future, as the benefits are derived from government reforms. The World Bank is providing financial assistance in the reform process, which should be successful given the country's political stability. The private healthcare sector is slowly expanding, although currently it only serves a wealthy minority.

The medical device industry in Serbia is very small; only US$4.5 million worth of equipment was exported in 2003. Manufacturers have also been recently affected by changes in legislation, including the enforcement of GMP standards. However, a new organization responsible for the registration of devices was established in the latter part of 2004, which should make the authorization process more efficient.
