Upstate New York Physician Recruiters Receive Awards from New Doctors Across New York Program
More than $2.2 million awarded over five years for Physician Loan Repayment and an additional amount of nearly $1.9 million over two years for Physician Practice Support to member hospital and doctors.

Governor David A. Paterson has announced awards for New York State's new Doctors Across New York (DANY) program and the Upstate New York Physician Recruiters were major beneficiaries. The program, designed to help train and place physicians in medically underserved communities across the State, will provide more than $11 million over five years to aid physicians with repayment of qualified school loans in exchange for a minimum five-year commitment to practice in an underserved area.
An additional amount of $11.1 will be awarded over two years to aid physicians in expanding or establishing medical practices and facilities to recruit new physicians to practice in these vibrant Upstate New York areas as well.
Under this funding, members of the Upstate New York Physician Recruiters received more than $4.1 million, with $2.2 million awarded as part of the Physician Loan Repayment program and nearly $1.9 million awarded as part of the Physician Practice Support program.
"Our member organizations are excited to be receiving this funding to assist us in recruiting highly skilled physicians to our communities," said Jennifer Metivier, President of the Upstate New York Physician Recruiters. "Upstate New York is a great place to live and practice medicine and the Doctors Across New York program provides an additional incentive to physicians to come and stay in Upstate New York."
Time is of the essence however, as these grants expire if they are found unused after six months. But State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M. D., is confident that won't be the case: "We believe that the quality of life in New York sells itself as a great place to live and practice medicine. Once these doctors see how lovely our rural communities are and enjoy the satisfaction of getting to know their patients, I think they'll stay in New York."
Members of the Upstate New York Physician Recruiters that received DANY funding include: Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid; Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake; Alice Hyde Medical Center in Chateaugay; Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone; Aurelia Osborn Fox Medical Center in Oneonta; Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira; Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill; Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg; Canton-Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam; Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Clinton; Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh; Little Falls Hospital in Little Falls; Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown; Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in Niagara Falls; O'Connor Hospital in Delhi; Olean General Hospital in Olean; Rochester General Hospital in Rochester; and Rome Memorial Hospital in Rome; and Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.
Applicants were reviewed based on population needs and the community's circumstances, such as the length of time the position had been vacant, long waiting times for appointments, or high use of rooms for routine care.
