According to a recent report from Quris, 57% of US e-mail users say they have made an online purchase directly as a result of a permission e-mail they received.
But e-mail users are not necessarily loyalists, as 80% say they have stopped reading e-mails from companies they had once signed up with because they now consider the e-mails irrelevant.
Quris surveyed 1,691 US e-mail users in August 2003 and also learned about the particular reasons e-mail users have for losing interest in permission e-mail. Nearly 70% of respondents told Quris that they lose interest if the e-mails come too frequently, while 34% say they lose interest in e-mails if there's nothing of "significant value" in the messages.
Retailers in the US understand the importance of e-mail marketing. As Shop. org and Forrester Research found in May, 71% of US retailers send e-mail marketing to house lists and 96% say sending e-mail to house lists is effective.
In April, the e-tailing group found that 80% of retailers in the US have sent e-mails about sales or special deals, still only 33% are sending personalized messages.
