Downsized and Unemployed Find New Start with Medical Training at Northeast Technical Institute

Unemployed students get the help they need for retraining at local Career Centers.

Scarborough, ME (PRWEB) November 10, 2008

Outsourcing, downsizing, restructuring, and workforce optimization are just some of the catchphrases used to describe an unfortunate reality in our current economy….job loss.

More and more people are finding their jobs going overseas or disappearing altogether. Even having worked for the same company 20 plus years doesn't provide immunity.

Northeast Technical Institute (NTI), working in conjunction with state and federal workforce agencies, is providing these individuals with the tools, knowledge and opportunity to start again. Paid re-training is available through MA, ME and NH agencies to those who qualify. Once the applicant is approved, they can attend one of a number of programs offered at NTI which provide entry into an industry that has remained strong and resilient. Healthcare jobs are plentiful, and according to the Department of Labor, many fields within this industry will continue to experience significant job growth well into the next decade.

Clinical Medical Assistant, Medical Office Assistant, Health Information Specialist, Medical Billing and Coding, Phlebotomy/EKG, and Medical Transcription are all offered at NTI campuses located throughout Massachusetts and Maine. All are offered on a regular basis with classes starting every week. Most courses take only a few months to complete and national certification is available. And with NTI's exclusive "Flex-Train" method, students can custom design a schedule to meet the demands of their busy lifestyle. Flex-Train also allows students to receive one-on-one instruction allowing the student to progress faster.

Priscilla Bergeron, who received assistance from the Valley Works Career Center and the NH Works Career Center, worked for Hewlett-Packard for over 20 years. Not ready to retire but needing new skills, she completed the Health Information Specialist program and is now employed in the Medical Records department of Dana Farber in NH.

Laurie Rennie and Carol Barnaby's training was made possible in part by the financial aid they received through WIA (Workforce Investment Act) funding through the Career Center. Both had worked in computer manufacturing before being downsized. Laurie completed both the Medical Office Assistant and the Medical Transcription programs. Carol earned her certificate in Medical Billing and Coding. Both are currently employed at Sleep Me, Inc.

The Career Center was able to assist Maureen Surles, who had this to say about her experience at NTI, "I would like to take the time to thank the staff and instructors for all the help you have given me with going back to school after almost 40 years of being out. I am very pleased with the choice I made in taking the Medical Office Assistant program. I have also recommended this school to a friend of mine who is attending classes there now to become a Clinical Medical Assistant."
