PK: MDDM), a company currently positioning in the less-lethal products market with its ShockRounds(TM) development, advises that the Company has established a biodefense division to identify areas of urgent need and opportunity dealing with emergency events related to biological warfare and bioterrorism. The biodefense initiative will complement the company's development stage advanced technologies and its marketing efforts and global relationships in law enforcement, military and homeland security.
The new MDM division will evaluate its priorities and capabilities to respond to opportunities arising from the mandates of several coordinated Departments and Agencies of the U. S. Government: Health and Human Services, Agriculture, Attorney General, the CIA, Defense, Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Labor, and others.
The events of terrorism around the world during the first few years of the 21st century reinforce the urgency for development of countermeasures against bioterrorism. The Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 calls for forward planning that includes "Developing and maintaining medical countermeasures (such as drugs, vaccines and other biological products, medical devices, and other supplies) against biological agents and toxins that may be involved in such emergencies."

The MDM Biodefense Division will evaluate opportunities for development of treatments that are highly targeted to specific threats as well as pharmacological prevention and treatment modalities that are "broad spectrum" and may be used in synergistic combinations. In all cases, preference will be given to projects for which a rapid development track is feasible, including opportunities for re-deployment of existing technology in new systems. MDM will also assess projects on their potential for development of related pharmaceutical products with medical and veterinary applications. MDM's evaluation will address initiatives pertaining to the "Strategic National Stockpile" provisions of the Bioterrorism Act and related legislation, and the recently approved $5.6 billion "Project BioShield" with a focus on opportunities in novel vaccine technologies.
The MDM new business division in bioterrorism countermeasures will commence its work immediately and will report progress as its team develops, initial evaluation is completed, and opportunities are confirmed.
