When more than 100 people converged on the golf course on June 14 for the Armed Forces Insurance (http://www. afi. org) Hacker’s Classic sports celebrity tournament, the result was more than $27,000 raised to benefit the United Way of Leavenworth County.

“Our annual golf tournament is a fun way to give our employees and other members of the community an opportunity to support the work of the United Way,” said Col. Tom Dials (Retired, U. S. Army), chairman, AFI. “This year’s donation is the largest yet, thanks to the generosity of those who attended.”

Numerous sports celebrities from the Kansas City area partnered with corporate sponsors on 28 teams that competed in the tournament. Sports celebrities in attendance included former Kansas City Chiefs tight end and current Chiefs Ambassador Walter White, former Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Neil Smith and former Kansas City Chiefs safety David Whitmore, and former University of Kansas basketball player Isaac “Bud” Stallworth. The event, which has been held annually for the past 18 years, attracted numerous corporate sponsors, including Commerce Bank, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, and National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, Inc. The tournament launched with an outdoor barbecue and auction event that included a football signed by the Kansas City Chiefs Ambassadors, a Sports Illustrated Magazine featuring 2008 NCAA Champions Kansas Jayhawks signed by Bill Self, a golf club signed by professional golf legend Tom Watson, an autographed picture of ABC’s Modern Family actor (and Kansas City native) Eric Stonestreet, and much more.

“Because of supporters like AFI who host events to support the United Way, we are able to achieve long-lasting change in our community,” said Derald Linn, executive director of United Way of Leavenworth County (http://www. unitedwaylvco. org), which sponsors 23 local service agencies in Leavenworth County, Kansas. “The money raised by the Hacker’s Classic makes a big impact on local families in need each year.”
