Invibio® Expands Further into Asia-Pacific Market

First Implantable Medical Device Using PEEK-OPTIMA® Polymer Approved for Use in Japan

SHENZHEN, CHINA (PRWEB) September 17, 2005

Invibio®, a leading provider of biomaterial solutions to the medical device market, today announced the first implantable medical device using the company’s PEEK-OPTIMA® polymer has been approved for use in Japan. The arthroscopy device, a tissue repair system used in shoulder procedures, was approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the governing body responsible for regulating all drugs and medical devices in Japan.

PEEK-OPTIMA polymer is now available globally and is utilized by medical device manufacturers throughout the world including the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa, China, Taiwan and now Japan. It is currently used in the development of cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurological, drug delivery, dental and arthroscopy applications.

“Since its introduction, PEEK-OPTIMA polymer has gained the confidence and acceptance of the medical device community as a highly reliable biomaterial,” said Michael Callahan, president of Invibio. “We are very pleased to expand the availability of PEEK-OPTIMA polymer to the Japanese implantable device market as we continue our on-going penetration of the Asia-Pacific medical market.”

InvibioÂ’s PEEK-OPTIMA polymer is a thermoplastic designed for medical device applications requiring blood or tissue contact of more than 30 days. Its combination of strength, stiffness and toughness, together with biocompatibility and the ability to be repeatedly sterilized without the degradation of its mechanical properties, make it ideally suited for long-term implantable medical device applications.

Additionally, PEEK-OPTIMA polymer offers superior imaging compatibility compared to other materials. Because it is inherently radiolucent, the polymer enables clear visualization through imaging techniques such as x-ray, Computer Tomography (CT) and MRI. Furthermore, Invibio can modify the biomaterial to offer varying degrees of radiopacity.
