When Are We Old Enough To Make Smart Choices? (Commentary)

When Are We Old Enough To Make Smart Choices? (Commentary)

This is a reaction to the reaction to the $3 billion damages awarded to lung cancer victim Richard Boeken. It suggests that as adults, we have a responsibility to make healthy choices for our children.

(PRWEB) June 18, 2001

When Are We Old Enough to Make Smart Choices?

I knew it would come, the barbs and insulting references about the $3 billion awarded to cancer victim Richard Boeken was excessive. And Saturday

A newspaper columnist compared lung cancer victims to people who overeat.

Let's get a few things straight about comparing tobacco to food. If we subscribe to the notion of a Creator or God, then we might assume that the

Primary purpose of food is to sustain us. The sugary, fatty and carb-loaded foods also have the potential to kill us if we use them unwisely.

On the other hand, cured tobacco is the only product that, when used as directed, simply kills you. Nicotine is defined first as a poison. Nearly a half-million Americans die prematurely every year due to smoking tobacco.

There is no upside to tobacco, other than that its use helps those addicted to feel better, very temporarily. It delivers basically the same thing that a fix does for any drug user.

When we award $3 billion dollars to the victim of lung cancer, it isn't about making him richer. It is about saying to tobacco companies: "Don't corrupt our youth with your poison." If, indeed, Big Tobacco ends up paying

That $3 billion--probably an unlikely event after the appeals process winds its course-- then the other positive impact of this case will be that it

Will cost more to buy tobacco products. We've proven that when the price goes up, demand for cigarettes goes down.

If nobody ever started smoking until they were the age of 21, then complainers about the Boeken award amount might have a valid point. The

Heart of the issue though, is that when you're 11 years old, you have not matured enough to make important decisions. When you combine that fact with the substantial evidence that tobacco companies have a long record of marketing their products to minors, then our society has a duty to stand up and do something about it. The vast majority of all smokers start smoking before they are 14 years old. By the time they are old enough to think about whether that was a good idea, many of them feel addicted, unable to

Stop.

In the course of my work as a smoking cessation coach, I've heard it over and over: "I just don't think I can quit. It's too hard. I started when I was 12 and smoking is like a part of who I am."

As adults, we are challenged to take responsibility for our decisions, for

Our lives. It is also our responsibility to look out for the best interests of our kids. One of the interesting things about human nature is that we tend to crave foods that are not good for us. It's so natural for a second grade student to go for the pizza and Pepsi if that is part of their

School's lunch menu. They get a little bit of a high from the caffeine and some short-term satisfaction from the fatty pizza. They are simply not old enough to realize the damage they can do from overindulgence.

If youth obesity and school-age smoking are both increasing, it is time for us adults to take a stronger stand on whether our kids smoke, what they eat and how they develop healthier habits. They are just not old enough to figure

It out by themselves.

CORI Receives $2.5 Million NIH Grant

CORI Receives $2.5 Million NIH Grant

The Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative (CORI) announced today that it has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.

(PRWEB) October 31, 2004

Portland, OR (PRWEB) October 31, 2004 – The Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative (CORI), a research organization dedicated to improving the overall practice of endoscopy, announced today that it has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The award supports the use of the existing National Endoscopic Database (NED) and the CORI consortium to perform research that will improve the quality of endoscopic practice. CORIÂ’s research goals are focused on four major themes:

Analysis of practice: Analyses of endoscopic practice patterns and fundamental endoscopic outcomes, changes in practice over time, and practice variation will inform decisions on resource utilization.

Translating research into practice: CORI will use the consortium to assess physician attitudes and knowledge, measure actual practice, and study the impact of new information on endoscopic practice in prospective studies.

Prospective research: Prospective research will focus on areas of practice that lack evidence of effectiveness. We will study outcomes of endoscopic surveillance, endoscopic therapies, and new endoscopic innovations, as well as factors that influence the quality of endoscopy as reflected in procedure complications, completion, and success.

CORI as a resource: The repository will be available as a resource to the research community.

With this new funding, CORI will be able to expand its research mission and advance scientific knowledge in the following ways:

· Analysis of practice will highlight variation, changes in practice over time, and the impact of new information and research on endoscopic practice (translation).

· Measurement of endoscopic findings based on procedure indication and patient characteristics will identify patients most likely to have serious pathology at endoscopy.

· Prospective studies will provide information about endoscopic surveillance (Barrett’s esophagus, colon neoplasia, ulcerative colitis), procedure quality and complications, and diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

· Prospective studies will investigate the impact of innovations in practice, such as capsule endoscopy, propofol anesthesia, and endoscopic treatments for reflux disease.

Analysis of the National Endoscopic Database (NED) can provide new information to improve the quality of care for patients with digestive diseases. Examples in other disciplines have shown that practice networks can influence clinical practice. CORI provides a tool for measuring clinical effectiveness in diverse practice settings where endoscopy is most commonly performed.

"The NIH has been a continuing supporter of our program and our technology," said David Lieberman, CORI Executive Director. "This grant award makes it possible both to advance our research efforts and to simultaneously develop our technology for further data collection and analysis. We are thankful to the NIH for their progressive approach to our research and technology."

About the Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative

The Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative (CORI) was founded in 1995 by the ASGE as a national data repository for endoscopic research. The shared repository is designed to promote endoscopic research among GI physicians. CORI is a leading source of GI research information, receiving more than 20,000 clinical procedure reports from more than 750 physicians nationwide each month. CORI research data have been used to support more than 50 major research initiatives to date. CORI operates as a not-for-profit subsidiary of the ASGE. How David Really Beat Goliath: New Book Details How A Run-Of-The-Mill Father Beat Capital One™ For An Alleged Credit Card Debt

How David Really Beat Goliath: New Book Details How A Run-Of-The-Mill Father Beat Capital One™ For An Alleged Credit Card Debt

This new book details how, with resiliency, determination, research, help from his legal coaches and Crem De La Crem investigative skills, he was able to turn it into a real life David beating Goliath match and won.

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) December 21, 2010

A new book titled "Turning the tables on credit card lawsuits" details how a run-of-the-mill father sued by Capital One for an alleged credit card debt he didn't owe, fought back and won. Ali Abdullah Ezzani says, "Just because you can't afford a lawyer on retainer, doesn't mean you have to give-up: use legal coaches and spend a lot of time researching in the law library and home. He goes on to say, "Black Friday has just left us and after Americans get done with their Christmas shopping of high definition televisions, Kinect X-Box, laptops, iPads, iPhones, and other items, this book will sell like wildfire, because the credit card lawsuits will be right around the corner."

While many would have thrown in the towel just by the names of one of the largest banks in America as well as a law office, he didn't. As a former senior employee for Barclay's bank in the collections department before and during the mortgage meltdown, he knew what came next if he decided to let them get a default judgment for not responding. Examples were wage garnishments, bank seizure, liens on his home, and worst of all, embarrassment in front of family and friends. While spending countless hours in the law library and home researching the laws surrounding this industry as well as finding legal coaches to help him with minor nuances he didn't understand, he did the impossible-he won. But it wasn't easy-instead of just going through the legal motions; he describes in his book the power of resilience, motivation, leverage, and how he mastered playing legal poker-which was vital in his success.

In terms of actual filings and legal procedure, he explains the following in his book that consumed this contentious process.

*How to answer a complaint

*The importance of setting a deposition

*Court filing of motions, including the filings of motions
Compelling the defendant to turn over documents and answer interrogatories

*Filing a motion for a cross complaint as well as a cross complaint for violations of various consumer laws, including, the Federal Debt Collections Practices Act, Rosenthal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, Deceptive Business Practices and Fraud

*Also, the filing of the ultimate motion: to terminate sanctions or in the alternative, a motion to dismiss with prejudice (can't ever file again against him on this matter resulting in a judgment for him as well).

Mr. Abdullah Ezzani has been a consumer, civil, and labor rights advocate since his junior year in college. In the year 2000, he received the prestigious award of "Who's Who in America-Most Influential College Leaders."

After finishing college with a 4-year degree in Psychology and Health Science, Mr. Abdullah-Ezzani, went on to teach English abroad were he also entered the arena of journalism, writing for an international newspaper on social and business issues. He currently writes for Ezine. com and Examiner. com. He is currently is pursuing graduate studies in both Human Resources and Teaching with an emphasis on Autism. Above all, his passion in life is to end discrimination against children with special needs and is also an advocate for children with special needs for little or no cost.

Mr. Abdullah Ezzani can be contacted for interviews and public appearances via email at: info(at)ezzani(dot)com or through his public relations agent, Sal Azzani, at: 866-347-1324

The Book Is Now Available On Amazon. Com As Well As His Personal Website, Ezzani. Com.

Broward Existing-Home Sales Drop in August

Broward Existing-Home Sales Drop in August

Residential sales in Broward County slowed in August mainly due to the expiration of the homebuyer tax credit, but are still significantly stronger than they were two years ago when they began climbing.

Miami, FL (Vocus) September 24, 2010

Residential sales in Broward County slowed in August mainly due to the expiration of the homebuyer tax credit, but are still significantly stronger than they were two years ago when they began climbing. In Broward County, single family home sales fell 16 percent compared to August 2009, but are 46 percent above August 2008 levels according to the MIAMI Association of REALTORS and the Southeast Florida Multiple Listing Service (SEFMLS).

Condominium sales dropped 7 percent in August, but were 24 percent higher than two years ago.
Beginning in August 2008, the Broward County real estate market experienced rising residential sales for nearly two years. After dipping slightly last month, single-family home sales are again reflecting healthy gains, while condominium sales continue to increase significantly.

“While sales have slowed somewhat after the expiration of the tax credit, the current market and its fundamentals reflect strength and stability,” said Terri Bersach, 2010 president of the Broward County Board of Governors of the MIAMI Association of REALTORS. “Pending sales, an indication of future sales, are rising, while closed sales are higher than they were in 2008, 2007, and even most of 2006.”

Statewide sales increased 22 percent for condominiums and one percent for single-family homes.
Nationally, sales of existing single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums, and co-ops rose 7.6 percent from July, but remain 19 percent below August 2009, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR).

Home Prices
After posting increases in the last few months, the median sales price of single-family homes in the Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Areas fell in August. The median sales price for single-family homes in August decreased five percent to $206,700 compared to a year ago. The median sales price for condominiums was $73,300, down 14 percent from a year ago. Statewide median sales prices decreased nine percent to $134,000 for single-family homes and 24 percent to $81,600 for condominiums.

Average sales prices, which have increased consistently over the last few months, rose again in August for single-family homes but dropped for condominiums. According to the SEFMLS, the average sales price in Broward County in August increased 7 seven percent from the previous year to $258,929 for single-family homes and decreased nine percent to $118,708 for condominiums.

Days on the Market and Inventory Levels Decrease
The inventory of residential listings in Broward County according to the SEFMLS dropped 6.4 percent from 22,579 to 21,143 since August 2009. The levels of active single-family home listings dropped four percent, while that of condominiums fell 11.4 percent from a year ago. Compared to last month, the total inventory of homes increased a negligible.8 percent. The average days a property stays on the market decreased 13.5 percent to 84 for single-family homes and 6.4 percent to 101 for condominiums. Nationally, total housing inventory at the end of August slipped.6 percent from the previous month.

“The real estate market in Broward County offers rare opportunities to all types of buyers,” said Natascha Tello, president-elect of the Broward County Board of Governors of the MIAMI Association of REALTORS. “We have record affordability and a wide selection of properties to choose from in all price points and locations. Buyers can also take advantage of the lowest mortgage interest rates in decades, allowing them to purchase a lot more for their money.”

About the MIAMI Association of REALTORS
The MIAMI Association of REALTORS was chartered by the National Association of Realtors in 1920 and is celebrating its 90th year of service to Realtors, the buying and selling public, and the communities in South Florida. Comprised of four organizations, the Residential Association, the Realtors Commercial Alliance, the Broward County Board of Governors, and the International Council, it represents more than 23,000 real estate professionals in all aspects of real estate sales, marketing, and brokerage. It is the largest local association in the National Association of Realtors, and has partnerships with more than 60 international organizations worldwide. MIAMI’s official website is www. miamire. com.

Note: The MIAMI Association of REALTORS and the Southeast Florida Multiple Listing Service are the sources for statistics reported by the National Association of Realtors and Florida Realtors. MIAMI reports average sales price as well as median sales price.

Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, Massachusetts Medical Society Announce Patient Safety Initiative to Prevent Medication Errors

Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, Massachusetts Medical Society Announce Patient Safety Initiative to Prevent Medication Errors

2 statewide medical groups collaborate in trying to reduce medication errors.

Burlington/Waltham, MA (PRWEB) October 14, 2006

The Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Medical Society, today jointly announced a health safety initiative for both patients and health care providers to reduce the growing incidence of medication errors. The new statewide initiative includes the promotion of a medication list (Med List) and tips for using medications wisely to patients and their families as well as promotion of a process known as reconciling medications by providers during medical visits. Reconciliation in the physician office setting involves, 1) comparing the patient’s current medication list with the list in the medical record, 2) making appropriate adjustments, and 3) ensuring the updated list is shared with the patient and the physician coordinating care.

Injuries from medications, known as adverse drug events (ADE), are far too common and costly in today's health care system, and most are preventable, according to experts. The Institute of Medicine estimates that at least 1.5 million preventable ADEs occur in the U. S. every year and cost in excess of $3.5 billion in additional hospital and medical costs.

Med List is a form that promotes patient health and safety through three steps: (1) by helping patients track their use of medications, herbs, vitamins, other dietary supplements and additionally helps track medication start and stop dates, when the medication should be taken, purpose of taking it, if any monitoring is required, and possible danger signs; (2) by assisting patients in discussing their medication history with physicians; (3) by giving physicians more complete and accurate information about a patient's medications to help provide a safer level of care. Med List and the helpful tips for using medications wisely may be downloaded free of charge from http://www. macoalition. org/consumerDirectory. shtml (http://www. macoalition. org/consumerDirectory. shtml).

Paula Griswold, M. S., Executive Director of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, said "Poor communication between patients and physicians during office visits is a significant contributor to medication errors. The physician or nurse practitioner may not be aware of all the medications the patient is taking, or may not know that the patient has stopped taking a medication because he’s experienced side effects. The patient may not know the purpose of her medications, or side effects to watch for that might indicate trouble. The medication list we’ve developed includes reminders that improve communication in order to make care safer.”

As physicians see patients for medical appointments, the Med List is reviewed and decisions made whether to continue, discontinue, or change medications listed. The purpose of the reconciliation process is to avoid medication errors associated with omission, duplication of therapy, drug-drug, and drug-disease interactions. According to the IOM, physicians should educate their patients about the medications they are taking, why they are taking them, what the medication looks like, what time they should take them, potential side effects, and what to do if they experience side effects. Physicians should also remind patients about appropriate medication self-management.

Kenneth R. Peelle, M. D., president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, said "The distinguishing characteristic of Med List is that it can be an important tool for both patient and provider in reducing errors. It allows the patient to be more involved and more of a partner in his or her health care, and it can facilitate and improve communication between patient and provider - a critical element in improving health care and patient safety."

To help transition consumers to completing and carrying a medication list, Brooks Pharmacy is participating in this initiative by providing patient medication profiles as well as making the Med List available to its pharmacy customers throughout 165 Massachusetts stores. The patient profile includes medications filled for the customer and can be used to complete the Med List. Patients may check with other Massachusetts chain or independent pharmacies as they may be willing to do the same.

"Actions for Prescribers," a checklist for inpatient and outpatient providers, nursing homes and assisted living facilities with IOM recommendations for improving medication safety is available to providers at http://www. macoalition. org/initiatives. shtml (http://www. macoalition. org/initiatives. shtml). Pharmacists may also access the checklist, “Actions for Pharmacists” from the same web site.

Med List was developed with the support of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction. According to Nancy Ridley, Director of the Betsy Lehman Center, “This is an important initiative that will help make the use of a medication list and reconciling medications a common practice at medical visits for patients and providers across Massachusetts.”
