For many of us, defining ourselves and our careers is an arduous task, yet others seem to characterize themselves almost effortlessly. In the case of Michele Milton, it would seem that she had a sense of herself right away. "I was dressed and indulged as a child, and surrounded by family and relatives who had a definite sense of style. I loved every minute of it!"
As a youth, Michele traveled extensively though out the U. S. and Europe, eventually ending up in New York City. This way of life allowed her to experience many images and cultures. Graduating from the prestigious LIM (Laboratory Institute for Merchandising) in New York City, her talents were immediately recognized as she was recruited into the Macy's Corporate Intern Program, launching the now well known "Little Shops Concept." Following this, she joined the Public Relations Department at Bonwit Teller, organizing trunk shows & special designer events. An opportunity presented itself at the Marshall Field's Buying Office in marketing, tracking trends and reporting on new designers.
Michele's keen eye for design - along with her marketing and managerial skills - soon lead her to the prestigious houses of Oscar de la Renta, Hermes, Fendi, Ungaro, Donna Karan and others. But as all people with vision, she yearned to establish her own business, and in doing so, launched the successful shoe company, Unicorn Shoes. Michele moved to Los Angeles where she again worked with impressive companies such as BCBG and Superga. The move also made it possible to share time with her soon to be husband, film producer and acclaimed artist, Clive Milton. The two currently divide their time between Los Angeles, New York and London.
In 1998, a huge challenge entered Michele's life…she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After the initial shock, Michele decided she would not allow the disease to define her, but instead, let the circumstances furnish her with the opportunity to discover a greater and deeper sense of purpose, especially in her work. "I have a renewed sense of life and every day is a gift that enables me to make a difference." She goes on, "I want to offer a perception of style and inspiration that evokes confidence in one's identity, particularly those women of my generation!" Michele's belief is that many clothing designers have forgotten women of the 40 and over age bracket. "I was tired - from a fashion standpoint - of being rubber stamped, processed and mislabeled with the same generic look." She aspired to create something that was not just about fashion but more importantly, about collecting those essential classic items that are unique and striking. "If you are seeking an alternative look, then Brilliantbyz. com is for you."
Michele wanted to make the website experience to be as pleasing as possible, much akin to shopping at one's favorite boutique or clothing store. The site is easy to navigate and there are excellent photos of all products. You can find quality items to choose from, from all over the world, yet many are made in the U. S. The site also offers books and other resources that Michele feels adhere to her concept of total wellness. Michele has also continued her commitment to give back.
While in LA, she spent time fundraising for the MS Society as well as Guide Dogs of America and the Leukemia Society. She also created Shop for Charity, i. e. events organized to highlight artists and designers whose work is not commercially available. To add to it, a portion of all monthly sales profits from Brilliantbyz. com goes to worthy charities and organizations.
In the end, Michele demonstrates qualities not only of a savvy business woman, but also someone who makes the most out life. "Teaching other women how to empower and enrich themselves, even when under great adversity, has brought a lot of personal satisfaction." She concludes, "When you look great, feel great and have the right outlook, you can prevail." Michele is inspired by role models such as fashion icons, Coco Chanel and Diana Vreeland, basically those who created empires and reinvented themselves against many odds. Michele's Philosophy "Dare to be different…make your statement and live your life to the fullest with confidence" And in fact, she certainly does.
