Nicole Johnson Inspires Children and Families with Diabetes and Discusses Blood Sugar Control

Friends for Life: National Children with Diabetes Conference

Pasadena Convention Center

July 18-21, 2002, Pasadena, CA

Managing diabetes is a challenge, even to the most dedicated people.

Balancing insulin with food and exercise is a difficult task

That requires discipline, knowledge and education.

-- Nicole Johnson To Share Personal Experience --

WHAT: Former Miss America Nicole Johnson will be available for one-on-one interviews during the Friends for Life: National Children with Diabetes conference. She will share her inspiring personal experience with diabetes and how she stays healthy using an insulin pump. Pump users can set insulin delivery to suit their individual needs, with the goal of keeping blood sugar levels in check around the clock.

New studies presented at the ADA annual meeting found that insulin pumps provide tighter glucose control than any other insulin delivery method for many diabetes patients. Achieving tight glucose control with a pump can reduce the risk of eye disease by up to 76%, nerve disease by up to 60% and kidney complications by up to 56%. Furthermore, tight glucose control can prolong a patientÂ’s life an average of five additional years.

In Los Angeles County, approximately 657,064 adults have diabetes (both diagnosed and undiagnosed). Approximately 4,629 youth are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (from the Diabetes Control Program, California Dept of Health Service, 2000).

WHO:  Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999, National Spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association, and author of “Living with Diabetes”

Nicole was diagnosed with diabetes as 19 year-old sophomore at the University of South Florida. She immediately started intensively managing her disease with more than four insulin injections a day. But, Nicole still was unable to effectively control her blood sugar levels. ThatÂ’s when she switched to insulin pump therapy.

Crowned Miss America in 1999, Nicole spent her 12-month term educating the public about diabetes. She currently serves as an international spokesperson for numerous organizations, including the ADA, and is the founder of Take the LEAD, an educational program to increase Leadership, Education and Awareness in Diabetes.

Currently, Nicole is lobbying in Congress with the ADA to increase funding for diabetes research.

WHEN: July 18 through July 21, 2002

Stratos Celebrates 20 Years of Innovation

Stratos Celebrates 20 Years of Innovation

Products developed during the firm's first 20 years touch the lives of most Americans as the company evolves to stay ahead of emerging technologies.

Seattle (PRWEB) October 10, 2007

Most people have probably never heard of Stratos, but there is a very good chance their lives have been touched by one of the hundreds of new products it has developed. The Seattle-based company celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, which may be a significant achievement for most businesses, but pales in comparison to the long list of product and technology innovations it achieved in its first two decades of business.

"We began like most small businesses, with a vision, enthusiasm and youthful naïveté," says Stratos Founder and CEO Allan Stephan. "Over the years we evolved as we came to understand the needs of major corporations and venture backed companies in life science, consumer electronic and software products. We added skills, but more importantly, we created two organizations with separate strategies to assist company growth: Stratos Product Development LLC., for their immediate development needs, and Stratos Group LLC., for the longer range mission of identifying and cultivating emerging technologies and companies for corporate acquisition."

"Our staff of scientists, engineers, designers and program managers create efficiencies and relationships that accelerate our client's time-to-market," said Sean MacLeod, president of Stratos Product Development. "For 20 years now, many of the world's most successful technology organizations have turned to Stratos for their hardware and software solutions. For a service organization, long term business relationships that create significant growth for our clients is a true measure of success."

Some of the more recognizable consumer products developed by Stratos Product Development are the first laptop computer touchpad (an input device on which a user moves their finger to move the cursor and common for most laptops today) for Apple's PowerBook line, the game controllers for the first generation Microsoft X-Box gaming system and the first internet connected biometric device (a wireless sports pedometer to monitor exercise performance) for a start-up called Sportbrain.

For the past 10 years, healthcare and life science corporations have relied on Stratos Product Development's expertise converting biology, biochemistry and physiology to the digital domain for software analysis or therapeutic treatment. Stratos has several in-vitro diagnostic, molecular analytic instrumentation, and minimally invasive medical device efforts currently under development. The company was also recently engaged to help a leading medical device manufacturer develop a new category of patient worn, wireless devices for vital sign monitoring for the hospital environment.

The Stratos Group looks to the future with a focus on understanding unsolved or predicted problems facing mankind, and creating solutions through the application of emerging technologies or the innovative combination of existing technologies. "Typically, we identify or have intellectual property or emerging technology brought to our attention through our academic and corporate relationships. This permits us to address market opportunities that are beyond the product horizon of major corporations," says Stratos Group CEO, Allan Stephan. "Our goal is to bridge the gap between early fundamental research and its development into a commercially viable format."

To date, Stratos Group has founded, co-founded or incubated nine Puget Sound-based companies including Amnis, a biological imaging instrumentation company, and Therus, a therapeutic ultrasound medical device company. Stratos Group has also partnered with Micronics, a micro-fluidics and molecular detection technology leader, since 2002 to address the critical need for lowering the cost of disease detection.

The Stratos Group has intensified its focus on solutions for personalized medicine to address the crisis of rising healthcare cost. A new spin-off, Stratos Biosystems LLC, is developing an affinity biochip for the capture and detection of disease indicating proteins (biomarkers) from blood or saliva far in advance of noticeable symptoms, which could enable early cancer detection, faster pharmaceutical development and lower cost medicine. Other Stratos' teams are working on extremely low cost DNA sequencing, which would help determine the best course of treatment or drug for an individual, and the development of a wearable consumer device for the non-drug treatment of chronic and acute pain. Financially, the Stratos Group partners with capital sources interested in advancing solution to problems facing healthcare and the environment.

"Much of our success is driven by the incredible passion our employees bring to work every day," says Mike Nelson, co-founder and vice president of industrial design. "Starting with a blank sheet and ending up with a product that is useful, functional and desirable is as much a thrill today as it was when we founded the company."

Buffalo, NY (Vocus) July 3, 2009

There is a growing interest in the relationship between food and health as more and more consumers reach for organic foods and foods made without chemicals, hormones and additives. Motivational speaker and specialty cookbook author Lisa A. Lundy makes available for the first time to the public a document aptly titled "Could Food Be Making You Sick and Tired?" which you can now download free from her website http://www. TheSuperAllergyCookbook. com (http://www. TheSuperAllergyCookbook. com). The document is an excellent primer addressing why there is such an explosion in the gluten-free diet, the value that the Feingold Association (http://www. Feingold. org (http://www. Feingold. org)) offers to people who want to be healthy, as well as the prevalence of celiac disease and other health conditions that are often helped by a change in diet including autism, ADD, ADHD, gastrointestinal issues, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel, behavioral, emotional and learning issues in children, allergies, depression and anxiety for starters.

Once source for people feeling sick or tired can be undiagnosed celiac disease. According to the University of Chicago's Celiac Disease Program, just over 3 million Americans have celiac disease, yet 97 percent of the people with celiac disease are undiagnosed. Celiac disease is more common than several other diseases that have become "household" words such as epilepsy, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, Parkinson's disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that can affect both children and adults. In people with an active case of celiac disease, eating gluten, an amino acid sequence found in wheat, barley, rye, some oats and other grains containing gluten, triggers the body's immune response and can damage or destroy the villi in the small intestine. While there is no cure for celiac disease, strict adherence to a gluten-free diet is the recommended treatment. Undiagnosed and untreated celiac disease increases the risk of cancer by 200-300% according to a fact sheet produced by the Celiac Sprue Association USA, Inc., a non-profit consumer organization dedicated to supporting individuals with celiac disease has a website with information and resources on the topic: http://www. CSACeliacs. org (http://www. CSACeliacs. org)

"More and more Americans are reaching for organic foods and foods made without additives, preservatives and food dyes because consumers are realizing that food can have a big impact on how they feel. U. S. food manufacturers are reacting to consumer demand and preferences by removing additives," Lundy stated. "It is an exciting time for consumers as we now see some of the major food producers on TV promoting the fact that their food is either organic or made without hormones, antibiotics, preservatives or additives" Lundy said.

Lundy is the author of The Super Allergy Girl™ Allergy & Celiac Cookbook (From A Mother Who Knows™), a gluten-free, casein-free, dairy-free, egg-free, peanut and tree-nut free and other allergen-free resource for both the beginner and experienced baker. She has more than a decade of experience with food allergies and celiac disease and has taught gluten-free baking classes in the Western New York community for many years.

Her cookbook, with more than 225 excellent recipes and over 100 pages of essential information has received extraordinary reviews from other mothers as well as from internationally known physicians like Doris J. Rapp, M. D. http://www. DrRapp. com (http://www. DrRapp. com). Order now to receive 10% off the list price of this exceptional book from http://www. TheSuperAllergyCookbook. com (http://www. Baxa Sponsors Exhibitor’s Theatre on Reducing Environmental Exposure to Hazardous Drugs at ASHP Mid-Year Meeting

Baxa Sponsors Exhibitor’s Theatre on Reducing Environmental Exposure to Hazardous Drugs at ASHP Mid-Year Meeting

Baxa Corporation is sponsoring a presentation to discuss the impact of the recent NIOSH Alert on safe handling of hazardous drugs for pharmacy practice and the use of closed-system devices for reducing the risks of occupational exposure. The Exhibitor’s Theatre presentation will take place on Monday, December 6th at the meeting of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) to be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Englewood, CO (PRWEB) December 1, 2004

Baxa Corporation is sponsoring a presentation to discuss the impact of the recent NIOSH Alert on safe handling of hazardous drugs for pharmacy practice and the use of closed-system devices for reducing the risks of occupational exposure. The Exhibitor’s Theatre presentation will take place on Monday, December 6th at the meeting of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) to be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

The presentation details the findings from a study on biological uptake of cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide in the infusion center pharmacy and nursing staff at the newly built cancer center of the University of Utah. The presenter, Jim Jorgenson, RPh, is Director of Pharmacy for the Huntsman Cancer Institute, where the study took place.

Study data documented that standard worker precautions and safe handling guidelines were not effective in preventing environmental exposure and subsequent uptake of the chemotherapy drugs in the healthcare workers tested. These findings have been supported in a NIOSH Alert entitled, “Preventing Occupational Exposures to Antineoplastic and other Hazardous Drugs in Health Care Settings” published in March to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Web site.

The program will include discussion of recommended precautions for safe handling of hazardous drugs, the effect of the adoption of closed system technology (CST) on the facility’s environmental contamination levels, and the impact of both the NIOSH Alert and USP 797 on pharmacy practice standards.

ASHP is a 30,000-member national organization representing pharmacists practicing in hospitals, homecare, HMOs and alternate-site facilities. The Society provides extensive published and educational resources that help pharmacists improve their professional standards and make the best use of medicines and technology for patient safety and improved outcomes. ASHP holds two annual meetings for members and industry representatives.

The complimentary educational program will be held Monday, December 6th in Exhibitor’s Theatre 07, Room 311D of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, beginning at 11:15 AM. Participants are eligible for one credit hour of Continuing Education (CEU).

Pharmaca Relaunches eCommerce Site on UniteU Platform

Pharmaca Relaunches eCommerce Site on UniteU Platform

Pharmaca’s goal to bring the in-store energy, shopping experience and product mix to the online shopper was achieved by replatforming their website with UniteU’s on-demand ecommerce solution.

Rochester, NY (PRWEB) October 15, 2010

UniteU Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of integrated, on-demand ecommerce applications, announces the launch of http://www. pharmaca. com. UniteU will be providing a full range of ecommerce and e-marketing services to support consumer online sales of Pharmaca products.

Since opening its first store in 2000, Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy has offered traditional pharmacy services alongside holistic remedies so customers can choose how they want to approach their health. Pharmaca’s staff of certified practitioners helps guide customers through a selection of over-the-counter medications, alternative remedies, and natural cosmetics and body care products for a stress-free shopping experience.

Pharmaca’s goal to bring the in-store energy, product mix and shopping experience to the online shopper was achieved by replatforming with UniteU’s on-demand, software-as-a-service approach (SaaS) ecommerce solution. "UniteU has the ecommerce tools and technologies to help companies like Pharmaca more effectively and efficiently sell directly to the consumer on a global basis," said Soumen Das, UniteU’s CEO. "We can tailor our application to handle complex requirements. We deliver global ecommerce capabilities as well end-to-end ecommerce services.”

Pharmaca had outgrown its internally developed ecommerce system and needed a cutting edge solution that would support the aggressive growth objectives for its online channel and leverage their existing retail store inventories. UniteU’s solution provides a rich product presentation, improved shopping navigation, and a more personalized online buying experience. By deploying the UniteU solution, Pharmaca has gained superior personalization and merchandising features that are built into the hosted solution. Web Managers have more control over the way shoppers interact with the web store and make it easier for shoppers to research relevant products related to a specific medical conditions.

“We looked at a lot of other companies and what really set UniteU apart is that they are more than just a SaaS technology provider”, says Wayne Aiello, Pharmaca’s E-Commerce Director. “Their focus is on retail, and in particular, they understand the ecommerce niche extremely well. During implementation the UniteU team managed the overall project for us, coded the site and trained us on how to best use it. As a leading merchant of integrative health and wellness products, we were grateful we didn’t have to worry about building all the functionality ourselves and instead could focus on the tasks that help set us apart from our competition. I have worked with many technology vendors in the past but never had anyone hand hold us through an implementation as well as UniteU did.”

Pharmaca’s daily online sales jumped more than 30% the day after moving to the UniteU platform. But according to Aiello, the best benefit of partnering with UniteU is yet to come. “Now that our site is live,” comments Aiello, “UniteU continues to coach us on ways to grow sales. UniteU’s Strategic Partner Program enables us to leverage the expertise of the UniteU team as well as their network of commercial users. We are getting a true retail partner with UniteU.”

“We are ecstatic to be partnering with Pharmaca and to be assisting with their growth objectives”, said Jacqueline Segura, Director Merchant Solutions Group at UniteU. “We are confident they will see an immediate impact on site traffic, online sales, and their bottom-line from backend efficiencies. We work in partnership with all our customers to help them attain their business goals.”

UniteU is a comprehensive hosted ecommerce solution available via Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) with dedicated hosting and managed services. The UniteU Connected Commerce platform enables merchants to quickly implement a new web storefront, outsourcing hosting and database administration to UniteU experts. With UniteU’s ecommerce platform, a merchant is able to provide a personalized online buying experience and making it easy for shoppers to find desired products, register for gifts, pre-order products, redeem coupons, comparison shop and checkout with ease using a one page checkout process.

ASTROLOGY AND THE ART OF HEALING BY A. T. MANN - A revolutionary view of health and astrology

ASTROLOGY AND THE ART OF HEALING BY A. T. MANN - A revolutionary view of health and astrology

(PRWEB) September 24, 2004 -

Conventional medicine treats symptoms with surgery and drugs rather than healing the root causes of illness. Alternative or complementary therapies act by addressing the whole self, which of itself can often raise awareness of the imbalances that create disease. There is a wide range of such therapies -- psychotherapy or meditation work with the emotions and mind; bodywork or herbs act on the physical; aromatherapy or massage work through the senses; and oriental medicines with the energy body. Astrology and the Art of Healing approaches healing and astrology in a new and revolutionary way. Physical, emotional, mental and spiritual therapies relate to stages of your life process; from conception through birth, and from childhood to old age and death. Many example horoscopes show how to understand the origins of health imbalances in your life and suggest correlations to appropriate therapies that will enhance the expertise of your doctors. A free astro-chart is included.

“This is the first time I have read about astro-health without going into hypochondria overdrive. The chart contains not only the astrological story of health issues, but the seeds of their resolution through fascinating combinations of therapies.” -- Journal of the Scottish Astrological Association

“These ideas are highly original and yet still close enough to traditional astrology to force one to think carefully, making the book a must read.” -- Plymouth Evening Herald

From the West Coast to the Midwest, two Chicago Natives Host the GirlsGuideTo. com Launch Party on Saturday August 12

Brette Borow, Founder of Girls’ Guide To, LLC and founding member, Cassie Mancuso of Lake Forest Sports Cars host the Midwest Girls Guide To Launch Party Saturday August 12, 2006 at Chicago hotspot, Enclave.

Los Angeles CA (PRWEB) August 9, 2006

Brette Borow, Founder of Girls’ Guide To, LLC and founding member, Cassie Mancuso of Lake Forest Sports Cars host the Midwest Girls Guide To Launch Party Saturday August 12, 2006 at Chicago hotspot, Enclave.

Growing up is hard to do. Brette Borow, Founder of Girls’ Guide To, LLC is committed to making the transition easier. Brette has brought together a group of women and together they have created the first digital handbook for women ages 17-25. With GirlsGuideTo. com the transition for young women is guaranteed to be less painful.

Brette Borow, along with Founding Circle members Cassie Mancuso, Jenny Kuzma and Olivia Johnson, are excited to bring Girls Guide To back home to Chicago. Girls Guide To is an interactive online destination for women 17-25 with 100% of the content driven by the audience. Girls Guide To allows girls to connect, speak out, and ask questions they might not be able to ask anywhere else.

“I am excited about bringing Girls Guide To back home to Chicago. It all started because the eight other girls in the founding circle (which includes Chicago natives Olivia Johnson, Cassie Mancuso, and Jenny Kuzma) and I got tired of feeling that everyone was talking about us rather than to us. We set out to create a place that not only spoke to us but let us speak out too,” said Borow, “A place where we could share our stories, ask our questions, and get advice, from people going through the exact same thing. A place that was honest, ripe, and organic. We did it, and that place is now Girls’ Guide To. Our goal is to inspire every young woman to feel positively about herself. Girls’ Guide To was created to resonate with all females in our audience. It’s feminine, fun, and straight to the point,” Borow said.

The site whose rolling launch began in May of 2006 with a Hollywood event provides a source of education, information, and support. Users easily navigate between the six main sections: Love and Sex, Beauty and Style, Mind and Body, College and Career, and 411. The site is still in its beta testing phase combines user generated content with online forums, streaming video and lots more in the works.

The Midwest Launch Party sponsored in part with Lake Forest Sports Cars will be held on Saturday August 12th, at Enclave, beginning at 9 p. m. with an open Svedka Vodka Bar from 9-10. There will also be a raffle with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Eileen Shea Lupton Memorial Foundation/Dream for Eileen. To reserve your spot on the guest list, or to learn more about Girls Guide To. com please contact Brette by email or visit the website www. girlsguideto. com.

“Girls Guide To, really is more than a website. It truly is a destination. It’s the stuff we dealt with or are even still dealing with. Love, life, relationships, body changes, finances, grad school, finding the perfect career, or even just an apartment,” Isabel Mize, founding circle member, said. “Young women going off to college or making their way in the real world are living on their own for the first time and it’s scary. We’re trying to offer as real a look as possible and to help other girls know they are not alone.”

Controversy over CVD Screening Debated in Op-Ed, Blog and Symposia Heart Attack Eradication Advocates Challenge Critics in the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine

Controversy over CVD Screening Debated in Op-Ed, Blog and Symposia Heart Attack Eradication Advocates Challenge Critics in the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine

The Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication (SHAPE) announced several public education efforts to further the cause of preventive heart attack screening. The efforts include a new blog and a symposia on the groundbreaking SHAPE Guideline. The blog is intended to allow cardiovascular specialist to dialogue with each other on atherosclerotic plaque, vulnerable patients and the fight against heart attack. The first symposia will be held in Orlando, Florida as a satellite event to the American Heart Association's convention and is titled, Coronary Heart Disease Risk Stratification: Dealing with the Vulnerable Patient. The announcements coincide with an op-ed published in the esteemed Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine entitled: Vulnerable patients are between a 'ROC and a hard place': Yes, it's time to screen for coronary artery disease.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 2, 2007

The Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication (SHAPE) announced today several public education efforts to further the cause of preventive heart attack screening. The announcement coincides with an op-ed piece published in the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine entitled: Vulnerable patients are between a 'ROC and a hard place'.

"We welcome frank and open discussion of the facts, but reject the efforts of those who would delay the implementation of the most powerful screening tools for coronary artery disease currently available," said Dr. Morteza Naghavi, co-author of the editorial and Founder of SHAPE. "We look forward to honest scientific debates during our upcoming symposia at the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology conventions. Heart attack is not an earthquake; it can be predicted and thereby prevented."

The editorial is the latest in the vibrant and at times hot debate sparked by the publication of the SHAPE Guideline. The SHAPE Guideline calls for all apparently healthy men 45-75y and women 55-75y (except those with a very low risk factor profile) to be screened for atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the heart and arteries).

The organization also launched, The SHAPE Blog (http://shapesociety. blogspot. com/), an online forum dedicated to discussion of atherosclerotic plaque, vulnerable patients and the fight against heart attack.

"The ongoing debate on which apparently healthy adults should be considered for atherosclerosis imaging or measurement of biomarkers is moving the medical community in the right direction," said Dr. Roger Blumenthal of the Cardiology Division of Johns Hopkins Hospital. "Traditional risk assessment ignores family history of heart disease, triglyceride levels, dietary and exercise habits. The SHAPE Guideline allows clinicians to better identify 'vulnerable patients,' individuals who are at very high risk of a near future heart attack."

Heart attack and stroke account for more death and disability than all cancers combined. Unlike cancers, heart attack strikes more than half of its victims by sudden death. More than 600,000 Americans unexpectedly suffer heart attacks each year, over 200,000 of which die in the span of an hour.

Multiple screening tests are approved for sub-clinical (asymptomatic) cancers such as mammography and colonoscopy. However, none are approved for sub-clinical atherosclerosis, which underlies both heart attack and stroke. This void leaves many individuals - even those with severe atherosclerosis - totally unaware of their risk because they have no symptoms.

A common objection to mass screening of pre-symptomatic individuals is cost effectiveness. However Dr. Alan Boyar's recent calculations, published in the American Journal of Cardiology, estimate that the National Cholesterol Education Program's annual gross cost is estimated at $12 .3 billion, preventing some 250,000 cardiac events and 15,000 deaths. His analysis determined that SHAPE Guideline's estimated annual gross cost is $13.3 billion. His analysis determined that the SHAPE Guideline could prevent as many as 400,000 cardiac events and 24,000 deaths per year.

About SHAPE:
SHAPE's mission is to eradicate heart attack by promoting effective tools for prevention while advancing the scientific quest for a cure. Additional information is available on the organization's website: www. shapesociety. org or call 1-877-SHAPE11.

Personal Life Coach Gives Tips on Stress Management

Personal Life Coach Gives Tips on Stress Management

Diane Baskind, personal life coach out of Arizona, has a new article on her website to help people with stress management. The article is called “5 Quick Stress Busters”, and that’s what it delivers. It can be found along with other resources on Diane’s website, www. NewPerspectivesInc. net.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) March 23, 2006

Diane Baskind, personal life coach out of Arizona, has a new article on her Web site to help people with stress management.

The article is called “5 Quick Stress Busters" and the tips include:

Sleep more. It’s very common in our society to exist on less than 6 hours of sleep a night. But experts keep telling us we need at least 8 hours. Not just to rest our bodies, but to rejuvenate our minds. “Tired” and “cranky” seem to go hand in hand. Don’t use your bedroom to watch the news or finish up some work from the office. Make that room your haven, a place to relax and escape the day. Have a hot cup of tea, take a warm bath, or read a paperback to help you unwind.

Have faith. Saying a short prayer in times of stress can give you a sense of calm, especially when the situation is one you really have no control over. Studies have shown that people who trust in a higher power have lower blood pressure. Being able to forgive people also can affect your blood pressure. Holding a grudge is not good for your health!

Turn it off. The convenience that cell phones have added to our lives can actually be a double-edged sword. We depend on them so much it seems we can’t live without them. This increased accessibility means not only can our loved ones reach us at any time, but so can work. If your employer legitimately needs to have your cell phone number, make sure you set clear limits on when you can and cannot be reached. Your time off is yours.

Take a holiday. It doesn’t have to be a fancy vacation resort. A day at the beach, or an afternoon at the park will do. Just anywhere you can be and not think about the bills, work, or whatever tensions you may have. It’s important to take time for yourself, so do it! You’ll feel better with a fresh outlook.

Treat yourself. Sign up for a yoga class at your local gym or community center. The costs are nominal, and you’ll feel more relaxed after even just one session. A monthly massage or a spa treatment is also a great way to recharge. You’ll walk out feeling like a million dollar bowl of jelly.

"Sometimes it’s hard to get a handle on what causes the stress," said Baskind, “but dealing with it doesn’t have to be so hard. Once you find the technique that works for you, you can use it any situation."

Along with the article, the Web site includes other resources, including a monthly e-zine, to help people learn how to live happier lives.

Frost & Sullivan Awards Imaging3 and Its Dominion Vi Scanner

Frost & Sullivan Awards Imaging3 and Its Dominion Vi Scanner

Imaging3™, Inc, (OTCBB: IMGG), developer of a breakthrough medical imaging device that produces 3D medical diagnostic images of virtually any part of the human body in real-time, is proud to announce Frost & Sullivan has recognized Imaging3, Inc with the 2008 North American Medical Imaging Product Innovation of the Year Award for the Dominion Vi Scanner™.

Burbank, CA (PRWEB) February 20, 2008

Imaging3™, Inc, (OTCBB: IMGG), developer of a breakthrough medical imaging device (http://www. imaging3.com/3d_medical_imaging_technology. htm) that produces 3D medical diagnostic images of virtually any part of the human body in real-time, is proud to announce Frost & Sullivan has recognized Imaging3, Inc. (http://www. imaging3.com/) with the 2008 North American Medical Imaging Product Innovation of the Year Award for the Dominion Vi Scanner™.

Quoting Nadim Daher, Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst, "The Dominion combines speed and accuracy to offer fluoroscopic imaging in 3D, that is, real-time 3D imaging. It is the only system capable of 3D imaging in real time, which makes it a valuable clinical tool in a wide array of applications. Its cost effectiveness and versatility make the Dominion an exceptional asset for today's healthcare enterprise."

"3D imaging has become a reality in the medical imaging world. Its clinical utility is further demonstrated every day in radiology, as well as in various specialties, where it provides physicians with a more intuitive depiction of anatomy and function, non-invasively. However, the techniques that today are described as four-dimensional (4D) imaging still require lengthy post-processing times, which limit their clinical utility and hamper their routine utilization."

"Using breakthrough, patented technology, the Dominion can provide 3D images at a rate of thirty frames per second and display them in less than one second - thereby meeting the definition of real-time dynamic imaging. The system combines the speed advantage of high-speed photo fluoroscopy with the benefits of 3D imaging and the precision of computed tomography (CT)."

"The Dominion can be utilized for both diagnostic and interventional procedures, in a variety of clinical areas including trauma, pain management, pediatrics, orthopedics, sports medicine, cardiovascular imaging, and neuro-vascular imaging. During interventional procedures in particular, its dynamic 3D imaging capabilities make the Dominion a useful image guidance tool to assist in placing catheters and medical devices and in performing a broad range of surgical interventions. Current devices used for image guidance - such as ultrasound - are limited to 2D imaging and/or offer poor image quality, which makes them less practical and less reliable."

"Therefore, the Dominion can further enable minimally invasive surgery by providing a more robust modality, with the end-result of improving surgical productivity as well as patient safety. Given its light-weight, small-footprint profile, the Dominion is a truly mobile imaging system that can go through any doorway and be moved around freely to where it is needed. This allows bringing the equipment to the patient at the point of care, thereby offering the flexibility and timesavings that are so critical in an acute care environment."

Sleep, Mood and Your Mattress

Sleep, Mood and Your Mattress

Overlooking the obvious? Two-thirds (66 percent) of Americans report they are not likely to evaluate their mattress for comfort and support and, if needed, consider buying a new one.

ALEXANDRIA, VA (PRWEB) May 24, 2006

In our 24-7 society, exhausted Americans seem to be willing to try almost anything to cope with sleep-deprivation and emotional stress; however, they may be missing some of the most obvious solutions. According to the findings of the 2006 Better Sleep Month Survey, Americans may be turning to “quick fixes” in lieu of focusing on lifestyle changes and potential long-term solutions to improve their sleep.

The annual poll revealed that more than half of Americans are unlikely to take some basic steps to improve the quality of their sleep. Sixty-six percent are not likely to evaluate their mattress for comfort and support and, if needed, consider buying a new one. (As a rule of thumb, after five-to seven years of use, it’s a good time to evaluate your sleep set.)

“The survey results show that people overlook some of the most obvious components of quality sleep,” said Nancy Shark, executive director of the Better Sleep Council. “Take for example the reluctance, even if needed, to replace an old mattress. The mattress is literally the foundation of our sleep. Comfort and support aside, we spend an average of four entire months every year entirely on our bed. Given that kind of usage, your sleep surface cannot be an afterthought.” For more on survey results visit www. bettersleep. org/national-survey. asp (http://www. bettersleep. org/national-survey. asp).

Catch 22: Sleep and Emotional Well-Being

It is well-known that sleep problems can be a key sign of depression. What people may not realize is that the reverse is also true — sleep disorders can actually trigger mood disorders and depression. As researchers learn more about the underlying cyclical connection between sleep and our mental health, the important balance is becoming even more apparent.

The Better Sleep Month survey found that better sleep did result in better mood among respondents. When asked to rate their sleep quality, quantity, and overall mood over the course of one week, people who obtained seven or more hours per night were more likely to rate their general mood as excellent (57 percent), as opposed to those receiving an average of six hours of sleep or less (45 percent).

Five Tips to Improve Sleep

In the 2006 Better Sleep Month survey, only 25 percent of respondents rated the quality and quantity of their sleep as excellent. That means that 75 percent need to take action to improve their sleep. The Better Sleep Council offers the following advice for Americans this May: www. bettersleep. org/emotional-well-being. asp (http://www. bettersleep. org/emotional-well-being. asp )

About Better Sleep Month

Each May the Better Sleep Council sponsors Better Sleep Month to help educate Americans about the impact of sleep on various aspects of our health and quality of life. Word Sell, Inc. Completes National Customer Service Training for Elkay Plastics Co., Inc

Word Sell, Inc. Completes National Customer Service Training for Elkay Plastics Co., Inc.

In today's uncertain economy, understanding customer needs is more important than ever. Training firm helps major industrial supplier take its customer care performance to the next level.

St. Charles, IL (PRWEB) February 18, 2008

Word Sell, Inc. (www. wordsellinc. com) recently completed an extensive customer service training program for Elkay Plastics Co., Inc. (www. elkayplastics. com), a leading national supplier of flexible packaging bags and film. The program, "Building Unbreakable Customer Relationships", was designed exclusively for Elkay Plastics and involved more than 60 participants in eight locations.

Word Sell, based in St. Charles, IL, creates and conducts modular, customizable training and coaching programs for sales, sales management and customer service personnel. Elkay expanded the scope of their program to include employees in several operational departments that engaged customers on a daily basis.

Gordon Tyler, Elkay's Vice President of Operations and Technology, noted that customer care has always been a top priority for the firm. "Today's customers are more sophisticated and demanding than ever before," said Tyler. "We are always looking for ways to better understand our customers and exceed their expectations. Word Sell's training is proving to be an important part of getting that done."

"The fact Elkay was willing to devote so much time and energy to customer care training speaks volumes about their organization," said Word Sell president, Brad Shorr. "Lots of companies train sales people, but how many make a real effort to develop the skills of their customer service personnel? Those are the folks who have the most contact with customers, and sometimes the most impact."

Word Sell has seen greater interest in sales and customer service training since the beginning of 2008. Shorr believes economic conditions may be the reason. "There's a growing perception that business activity is likely to be slow for the rest of the year," he said. "That being the case, companies want to develop the people they have rather than add to the staff. In addition, they want to do everything possible to retain and do more with existing customers. Our programs help companies do those things."

SCD Wholesale Prescription Club: Welcome Relief For Business Owners And Their Employees Who Cannot Afford Health Insurance

SCD Wholesale Prescription Club: Welcome Relief For Business Owners And Their Employees Who Cannot Afford Health Insurance

SmartChoiceDrugstore's Wholesale Prescription Club affords businesses and their employees the opportunity to obtain prescription drugs at wholesale costs not attainable via any other program outside of high cost health insurance coverage. This incredible benefit is available to businesses and their employees for an average of $5 per month.

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) May 5, 2006

SmartChoiceDrugStore’s (SCD) new wholesale pricing model is capturing the attention of business owners nationwide who are struggling to meet the needs of their employee’s health care requirements. Business owners are finding the new wholesale program’s business plan a welcome relief from the skyrocketing costs of health benefits, most notably prescription drugs.

SCD Wholesale Club’s membership plan for businesses is based on their consumer membership model, but at lower costs for the employer and their employees. In addition, there is one very significant difference; employee’s family members can enroll in the club for 75% less than the normal club membership. The business version of the club is available to all businesses in the United States.

The SCD Wholesale Club allows employers, who cannot afford health insurance coverage for their employees, the ability to still offer a prescription drug benefit that substantially reduces the employee’s prescription drug costs. Although the Club is not insurance, it does offer prescription drugs at wholesale prices that are not attainable through any other benefit program outside of health insurance coverage. In many instances, the medications are sold to club members at prices lower than some pharmacies actually pay for the drug.

SCD believed it was necessary to implement a new, wholesale pricing schedule for those business owners who cannot afford the astronomical costs of prescription drug coverage for their employees and is reflected in the low, annual Club membership costs. These costs are:

Owner: $80 annually (free with 5 or more employees) Employee (each): $60 annually Family Members: $20 annually

SCD CEO, Chatrick Clark, says that SCD Wholesale Club’s pricing is substantially lower than any retail pharmacy has offered before. “We are addressing the prescription drug needs of an enormous segment of the population that has been left to fend for themselves. The need for low cost medications has become critical in this nation and our belief is that the SCD Wholesale Club’s business and consumer model can address this need head on. It’s a win-win situation for both the member and SCD,” Clark says.

Business club members can access pricing, place orders, and obtain information regarding prescription medications through a toll free, club member support line. In the next few weeks, Club members will also be able to access their account online at www. smartchoicedrugstore. com. For more information please call 866-BUY-MEDS.

Media packets and information are available by calling Angela Jenkins at 866-289-6337 ext 107. Texas pharmacy license #24171.

Real Life Clutter Clean-Ups

Real Life Clutter Clean-Ups

Spring is a great time to help older adults get organized for their own safety and well-being. As a matter of fact, June is Home Safety Month, a good reminder that too much clutter can lead to safety hazards in the homes of older adults. Professional CAREGivers from the Home Instead Senior Care® network know all too well the dangers that clutter can pose for seniors. They also know how to help clean it up.

Omaha, NE (Vocus) May 21, 2010

Seniors hang on to their possessions for a variety of reasons from sentimental attachment to health issues that stand in the way of home upkeep and even safety. CAREGiversSM from the Home Instead Senior Care network have witnessed why seniors don’t want to give up their stuff, and they’ve offered solutions for what to do about it.

The advice is timed appropriately both for spring cleaning and Home Safety Month in June, sponsored by the Home Safety Council (http://homesafetycouncil. org/AboutUs/HSM/au_hsm_w001.asp); an observance that focuses on how to help keep homeowners safe in their homes.

CAREGiver Betty Collins remembers the half a dozen strips of yarn she found on her client’s rug. When she bent down to pick up and discard the yarn, her client stopped her with a resounding “no, no, no.” “She told me that her daughter, who has since died, played with the yarn when she was little,” Collins said. “She had to see that every day.

“In addition, older adults are often set in their ways and everything to them becomes important,” Collins said. “Junk to us is their life. That builds up, and some seniors just don’t know what to do with it. A lot of older adults walk with a walker and live by themselves. They just set things aside and then become overwhelmed.”

Clutter can creep up on seniors before they know it, said Paul Hogan, co-founder and CEO of the Home Instead Senior Care network. “Piles of mail and unpaid bills, difficulty walking safely through a home, frustration trying to organize and difficulty managing activities of daily living are all signs that clutter could be posing a danger to older adults and driving families to the breaking point (http://www. homeinstead. com/resources/familyresources/BreakingPoint. aspx),” Hogan said. “That’s when it may be time for family caregivers to offer help and support.”

Sometimes, there’s no obvious reason for accumulating possessions, and health hazards can result. Home Instead CAREGiver Karen Reymore said that one client had collected so many boxes of food, she could no longer walk safely in her home.

Helping seniors de-clutter is often a matter of time and patience, Reymore noted. “I took time for this client to get to know and trust me then I explained how dangerous it was for her to have so many boxes. Also, much of the food was outdated. So I sat everything in front of her, we went through that together and she decided what to keep. It took a year. We could do nothing in a hurry because some days she didn’t want to sort.”

Physical limitations can get in the way as well. One client packed many of her things in 10 plastic containers for a temporary move while her apartment was being renovated. When she moved back, it was too much for her. “For three years she couldn’t unpack,” Reymore said. “So I’m helping her do that; we’re still in the process.”

Some de-cluttering projects become a poignant trip down memory lane. When Lisa Barr Kazmierczak’s client sent her downstairs to retrieve a newspaper, she found 20 years worth of papers and magazines neatly stacked in rows. The client was dying and worried about the mess he could be leaving his family. So Lisa offered to help. Over the next four months, she hauled out the newspapers and magazines while her client told her what to save and what to toss.

“The articles he wanted to save I clipped and put in a folder for him by date. Many were stories about family members, so it was a history of sorts. Before you knew it, we were down to one stack of papers. We finished, and two days later he died. I presented the folder to his children. They were blown away.”

Graphic Screens from The CDC Group Promote New Baycare Sports Medicine Center in Green Bay

Graphic Screens from The CDC Group Promote New Baycare Sports Medicine Center in Green Bay

The CDC Group, Inc. completed one of the largest graphic shade image installations in the country at the new BayCare Clinic Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center in Green Bay, WI. The CDC Group, which is based in Chicago, designed the series of ten custom automated window shades which measure 24 feet tall by 20 feet wide. Each window shade features a double-sided image of an athlete in action to promote the sports medicine services at the clinic.

Chicago (PRWEB) February 5, 2009

The CDC Group, Inc. completed an installation of eye-catching graphic shades at the new BayCare Clinic Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center, part of the Aurora BayCare system in northeastern Wisconsin. The windows, which measure 24 feet high by 20 feet wide, are covered with motorized shades featuring illustrations of athletes in action, from football to biking to tennis.

"This is one of the largest graphic shade image projects in the country," said Sam Lallas, president of The CDC Group. The installation included 10 windows with double-sided graphic shades, so images are visible from the building's interior and exterior. The shades are housed in custom 6 ½ inch diameter tubes, and The CDC Group designed and installed custom pockets for the motorized components.

"These windows are a great marketing tool for BayCare's Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center," says Lallas. "Everyone who passes the clinic notices the huge images and immediately understands that the center serves athletes."

The motorized shades also support the BayCare center's overall green design and are factored into the building's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating. Automated window treatments, which allow users to automatically adjust window coverings to control light and heat, are a key component of green design. "Daylight harvesting can make a huge difference in energy use and operating costs," notes Lallas.

The CDC Group client list includes many hospitals and health care centers, among them Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, St. Mary's Medical Center in Madison, WI and Adventist-Bolingbrook Hospital in Bolingbrook, IL.

About The CDC Group, Inc.:
The CDC Group, formerly Chicago Drapery and Carpet, provides full-service consulting, design and installation of custom window treatments, architectural interior products and floor coverings for commercial customers. Window treatments include automated and manual shades, blinds, draperies and other window coverings. Spicing up Breast Health

Spicing up Breast Health

Bionutraceutical Company Focuses on Health Benefits of Turmeric and Black Peppers.

Mount Kisco, NY (Vocus) December 22, 2009

Curcumin, a powerful component of turmeric, a popular Indian spice, and piperine, an extract found in black peppers have been demonstrated to stop the growth of stem cells that spawn breast cancer tumors, according to a study from the University of Michigan (http://www. umich. edu/).

The research findings show a decreased number of stem cells while having no effect normal, non-cancerous stem cells. These results are the first to suggest that dietary compounds have the potential to reduce the risk of cancer by targeting stem cells. The results of the study are published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment (http://www. springerlink. com/content/y27556643833025w/).

These exciting research results follow findings in November from a study published in the British Journal of Cancer (http://www. nature. com/bjc/journal/v101/n9/abs/6605308a. html). The study found that the “curry spice” curcumin, a powerful component of turmeric and a popular Indian spice, demonstrated to help kill cancer cells in patients with esophageal cancer. Researchers believe that curcumin can inhibit the growth and metastasis of tumors in certain types of cancers. Curcumin has also been used and studied in treatment of a wide variety of diseases, from cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and type II diabetes to Crohn’s disease, psoriasis and arthritis.

Essence of Life, LLC™, a bionutraceutical company based in Mount Kisco, N. Y., has been at the forefront of the movement to promote curcumin and piperine’s health benefits. The company has developed innovative products based on these natural spices and others including fermented soy, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon. According to co-founder and CEO Dr. Vijaya Nair, “Independent research studies show that in Asian countries where consumption of natural herbs and spices such as curcumin and fermented soy is integral to traditional diets, we see a much lower cancer rate in the population.”

The company’s line of Jiva™ natural nutritional supplements includes Curcumin Plus capsules that also use BioPerine, an ingredient dominated by piperine and made by Sabinsa, which was used in the study from the University of Michigan shown to possibly reduce the risk of breast cancer formation. “Today’s research has shown that the underlying cause of arthritis, heart disease and cancer is chronic low-grade levels of inflammation in the body,” Nair said. “By combining the power of curcumin and bioperine, we can help prevent and reverse inflammation and its associated health risks.”

Nair’s background includes training in both Eastern and Western medical traditions, including a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. She developed Essence of Life’s line of supplements after conducting extensive clinical research on alternative therapies from Eastern medicinal approaches such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine at Columbia University’s School of Public health. “It is gratifying to see that the latest research confirms the efficacy of these safe and natural preventative therapies,” Nair said.

Combined Insurance Outlines Top Reasons Consumers Should Not Drop Life Insurance - Even During Difficult Economic Times

Combined Insurance Outlines Top Reasons Consumers Should Not Drop Life Insurance - Even During Difficult Economic Times

A top provider of supplemental insurance provides several key factors consumers should consider before making life insurance decisions

Chicago, (PRWEB) July 22, 2008

Combined Insurance, a top provider of supplemental (http://www. combinedinsurance. com/insurance-basics/about-insurance. html) insurance, advises consumers to avoid drastic measures, such as dropping or cashing in life insurance policies, to help cope with today's challenging economic environment. The insurer outlines several key factors to consider before making a decision to discontinue coverage.

According to a recent report in The Wall Street Journal (June 2, 2008) some consumers are resorting to pricey, often-risky alternatives such as tapping insurance policies or 401(k) accounts to help stay afloat financially. Due to a combination of factors including job cuts, decreasing home prices and increasing food and energy prices, there is a growing demand for cash-raising techniques to quickly provide access to the value of assets such as life insurance, retirement accounts or mortgages.

According to Steve Saurs, vice president of Marketing for Combined Insurance's Life & Health Division in the U. S., "While today's economic picture is uncertain due to the recent housing crisis, rising prices for fuel and other goods, and job losses in some industries, consumers in need of financial relief should make a careful evaluation before cashing in or cancelling existing life insurance coverage."

Combined Insurance outlines several important factors to consider before cashing in life insurance (http://www. combinedinsurance. com/insurance-types/life-insurance. html) policies or letting coverage lapse:
Drop Your Policy - Lose Your Rate Life insurance premium rates are based on a number of factors including age. If you cancel your coverage then decide to repurchase later, you will likely need to pay more for a like amount of coverage. Healthy Now Does Not Mean Healthy Later Health status, like age, is a key factor in determining life insurance premiums and coverage. If you cancel coverage now, while healthy, there is no guarantee you will qualify for the same coverage at a similar cost. Employer Health Plans Often Change If your life insurance policy was purchased through your employer, remember that employer benefit plans often change and life policies can be impacted. If you drop an existing supplemental life insurance policy and your employer subsequently changes or reduces benefits, you might not be able to purchase coverage through your company. Don't Think Fast Cash - Life Insurance Plans Can Offer Income or Mortgage Protection If you purchased a family income policy and you die, your family will receive monthly income for a period of time to make up for your lost wages. This type of shorter-term protection can help a family get back on its feet in the event the breadwinner's income is lost due to a death. Likewise, if you purchased mortgage insurance and you die, your mortgage is paid off. Expect the Unexpected Remember the reasons you selected life insurance coverage in the first place. Generally people select these policies to help financially protect their loved ones. Think about the impact on those left behind if your life insurance policy is dropped.
