The Very Reverend Martha J. Horne, dean and president of Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS), announced the creation of The Kreitler Environmental Fund, aimed to empower clergy and the church with a strong environmental ethic in order to help conserve and preserve the environment.

“The Kreitler Environmental Fund is a wonderful tribute to the Kreitlers, as well as a splendid new resource for this community,” said Dean Horne, “It is vitally important for those who would be leaders in the Church to understand the responsibility we have to safeguard ‘this fragile earth, our island home’… this generous gift will enable us to equip men and women for the critical work of environmental stewardship in the congregations and neighborhoods in which they live and carry out their ministries.”

The Kreitler Environmental Fund is being established by Peter Gwillim Kreitler (VTS ’69), his wife Catharine B. Kreitler, brother Jay Kreitler, and friends, in memory of John (Jack) Henry Kreitler and Muriel (Billie) Gwillim Kreitler, the parents of Peter Gwillim and John (Jay) Taylor Kreitler.

“Our family has initiated this Environmental Fund because Virginia Seminary has had a long and distinguished heritage of sending men and women into the world in service to God throughout all of God’s creation,” said the Rev. Peter Gwillim Kreitler, minister for the Environment in the Diocese of Los Angeles and creator of the Southern California television Series, Earth Talk Today, “…this legacy has inspired the Kreitler family and friends to help foster and embolden new leadership informed by a strong environmental ethic that will help form a sustainable model for the future.”

“Our parents, Billie and Jack Kreitler, always had a great love of the Episcopal Church and God’s natural sanctuaries from Cape Cod to the Florida Keys… they became increasingly concerned that future generations would not inherit as healthy an environment and they encouraged me, my brother Jay and all our family in our desire to preserve the places we love.”

Once fully funded, the Fund will support initiatives such as lectures, fellowships, and scholarships. The Kreitler Environmental Lectures, which will be held at the Seminary every other year, will explore the ways one’s appreciation and stewardship of the environment is enhanced by informed theological beliefs; the Kreitler Environmental Fellowships, awarded to a member of the Episcopal Church on an every other year basis, who would be in residence at the Seminary for one month, will provide recipients opportunities to deepen the Seminary community’s understanding and appreciation of why, from a Christian perspective, the environment matters; and the Kreitler Environmental Scholarships, will provide financial assistance for a student or member of the faculty of the Seminary to participate in a significant international or national consultation, conference, or event related to the environment.

On the eve of the Presidential election, Americans continue to support human space flight and endorse the Space Exploration plan to return to the Moon and to Mars, but they also question the relationship of NASA to its constituents.

A comprehensive, in-depth study by Dittmar Associates aimed at understanding public perceptions of NASA and particularly the Space Exploration Program reveals that Americans continue to support human space flight, with 69% supporting Space Exploration and 26% opposed. In addition, when provided information about the percentage of the U. S. budget allocated to NASA each year (less than 1%), 42% of the respondents indicated that it should be increased, 29% said it should be decreased, and 29% believed it should remain at its current level.

In an announcement on October 20, Dittmar Associates described the study, in which the researchers invited participants to offer their own ideas, thoughts, and suggestions as if they could be heard by NASA. The results of the study are therefore similar to a marketing survey, but more importantly they serve as a dialogue – one-sided though it may be – between a sample of the American public and its space agency. Some of the results include:

42% of Americans believe that NASA is either “very relevant” or “relevant” to their day-to-day lives;

Americans are concerned about terrorism, healthcare, and education, but the degree to which they believe NASA is relevant to their daily lives is the most important determinant of their attitudes toward funding;

61% of Americans indicated that the success of the Mars Rovers has had a positive effect on attitudes toward NASA in general, but this does not necessarily carry over to human space flight;

79% of respondents believe that NASA is “marketed” poorly or very poorly

When given the opportunity, Americans have a variety of suggestions about how to better promote the space program and make it more relevant to them personally.

In order to place ECG electrodes properly, women patients will have to bare their chests and men will need to let their dentists shave body hair.

Hard as it is to believe, the State of Maine dental board is poised to approve new regulations that will require some patients to "strip and shave" for even common dental procedures, such as root canals and fillings, according to a group calling itself "Stop the Pain in Maine".

The approval could come as early as Friday, September 12, when the Maine Board of Dental Examiners (MBDE) votes on a plan to require Maine dentists to administer an electrocardiogram (ECG) to all patients who opt for a popular, safe form of pain and anxiety sedation.

Maine will become the only state in the nation to ask dentists to place electrodes on their patients' bare chests, arms and legs in order to administer this widely accepted "standard-of-care" sedation, according to the group. Local dentists note that many physicians prescribe the exact same medication to patients, who administer it to themselves at home without any medical supervision whatsoever.

Dr. Michael Silverman, a nationally recognized expert on so-called "oral conscious sedation" says the Maine dental board's proposed ECG requirement is "patently absurd." More than 2 million adults in the U. S. have been treated safely, painlessly and effectively by their family dentists using the exact same sedation medication without the need for an ECG, Dr. Silverman notes.

Neither the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry nor Dr. Silverman's organization - DOCS Education - recommend the use of an ECG for the same protocols Maine's board says require an ECG.

Maine residents who are already squeamish about visiting their dentist now face the very real specter of having their dentists require them to remove their shirts or blouses. (To be effective, some dentists may ask women patients to remove their bras as well.) The ECG may also require dentists to shave body hair off their patients, in order to be effective.

Oral conscious sedation, also known as OCS, has helped high-anxiety dental patients receive fear-free dental treatments for more than a decade. Last fall, after a prolonged and in-depth review, the American Dental Association issued nationwide guidelines for OCS to ensure its safe use by family dentists. The ADA guidelines do not require or even recommend the use of an ECG.

Some local Maine family dentists believe the Maine dental board is seeking to require the use of an ECG in a thinly veiled bid to force patients in the state to seek out higher-priced dental specialists, including oral surgeons.

"This is all about greed, not public safety," says Daniel L. Steinke, D. D.S., M. A.G. D., one of the concerned Maine dentists. "Members of the Maine dental board are betting that rather than having dentists placing electrodes under their blouses/shirts, most patients will seek out the high-priced specialists or avoid the dentist altogether."

It is the likelihood that patients in Maine will avoid the dentist altogether that has Dr. Steinke and his fellow Maine dentists so concerned. He points out that the medical evidence is abundant showing a correlation between poor oral health and poor overall general health.

Dentists nationwide have contacted the Maine dental board and Governor John E. Baldacci, who appoints members to the board, to point out the harm the new rules will unleash. Governor Baldacci has made access to care and preventive medicine one of the foundations of his administration.

The Maine dentists are asking area residents to phone Governor Baldacci at 207-287-3531 to express their opposition to the Maine dental board's proposals. The board is scheduled to approve the measures this Friday, September 12, 2008.

In an annual ritual repeated around the country, Libertarian activists in San Francisco will be protesting the annual shearing of America's taxpayers and educating the public about voluntary alternatives to legalized theft.

Activists from the Libertarian Party of San Francisco will gather at the Montgomery BART and Muni station in downtown San Francisco, where the IRS will be "servicing" productive wage-earners by taking their money, from 4:00 to 7:00 P. M. this evening.

Libertarians believe that taking money from someone by force, even for a good cause, is theft. Voluntary charity and user fees, they say, will result in a healthier society, better care for those unable to care for themselves, and a more vibrant economy.

As government services have no competition, the money is often spent inefficiently, "or just flat-out wasted," says Chris Maden, Chair of the city Libertarians. "Private charities respond to market pressure. If we allowed people to spend their taxes locally and directly--by giving dollar-for-dollar tax credits for charitable contributions--eventually we'd be able to phase out income taxes altogether."

Americans are the most generous people in the world, as measured by the percentage of take-home pay given to charity. If income taxes were ended, it would be the equivalent of a 25% pay raise for most workers, and charitable giving would rise accordingly. "Without that money filtering through a red-tape laden government bureaucracy, it would go a lot farther," adds Maden.
