The newest Affiliate of the Healthcare Business Women’s Association (HBA), Greater Philadelphia, officially launched on February 16. More than 300 women attended the launch meeting hosted by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Collegeville, PA. This local Affiliate was formed to provide area women in the healthcare industry new opportunities to network and enhance their industry knowledge. This meeting is the first step toward establishing a Chapter in the Greater Philadelphia Area. The kick-off featured Philadelphia-area guest speaker Molly Shepard, CEO of Leaders Edge and author of “Stop Whining and Start Winning: Eight Surefire Ways for Women to Thrive in Business”

The Philadelphia-New Jersey corridor has been called “one of the most vibrant biopharmaceutical industry clusters in the country” by the authors of The Milken Study. In 2005, the HBA considered support for a new Chapter to serve the Philadelphia Region based on area growth in the healthcare industry. Need for a more local Affiliate was clearly demonstrated at a mobilization event held on October 17,2005. ”After more than 200 women attended our meeting, we knew there was interest in the networking, knowledge enhancement and mentoring opportunities that a local HBA Chapter can provide” said Elizabeth Dare, GPHBA Program Director from Astra-Zeneca.

HBA relies on the generosity of volunteers and sponsors to provide support for its local Chapters and Affiliates. These volunteers and corporate sponsors provide the foundation needed to keep a local Chapter active. “The support we’ve received from local corporations and individuals is outstanding,” said Lee Ann Kimak, GPHBA President from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. She continued, “This level of support underscores the importance of women in the pharmaceutical industry and the desire to identify and sustain meaningful programs for women by our corporate sponsors. We are grateful for their support and look forward to a close collaboration in the future.”

The Greater Philadelphia Affiliate’s calendar of events continues on April 4 with an evening seminar hosted by Endo Pharmaceuticals in Chadds Ford, PA. The seminar will feature guest speakers Doni Tamblyn from Humor Rules LLC and Sally Morgan from Effective Communications. Together the speakers will provide insights for women on effective presentation skills.
