Genetic Testing Divides Families

Genetic Testing Divides Families

Patients are faced with a complex process when deciding to disclose genetic test results to their family members, as reported in a study published in the Journal of Nursing Scholarship.

(PRWEB) May 12, 2005

Patients are faced with a complex process when deciding to disclose genetic test results to their family members, as reported in a study published in the Journal of Nursing Scholarship.

“Individuals who have a family history of a particular disease such as breast cancer or Huntington’s disease can now have a genetic test that will tell them if they, specifically, are at risk for that disease,” states lead researcher Rebekah J. Hamilton, RN, PhD, of theUniversity of Iowa. Hamilton looked at the decision making process of 29 participants, what and how they chose to disclose to family members, as well as the effects of test results. Knowing present or potential risk for children and being able to make plans for the future were cited as additional benefits of testing.

“Some evidence from this study indicated that cliques form in families composed of those who test positive for a mutation,” said Hamilton. Further research is needed to explore family dynamics over time after test results have been disclosed.

Researchers found that the type of disease, as well as the individualsÂ’ perceived need to prepare, influenced the timing of disclosure to family members. Some were selective in the information they revealed as well as with whom they shared the information.

Hamilton reports that even when family members are in agreement about having testing, receiving a positive result can have significant consequences on family connections. The data could influence clinical practice regarding genetic testing and what or how to discuss findings with family members.

Rescued, Rehabbed, Released -- National Aquarium Sends "Hastings" the Seal Back to Sea

Rescued, Rehabbed, Released -- National Aquarium Sends "Hastings" the Seal Back to Sea

National Aquarium staff and volunteers were joined by community members on the beach in Ocean City, Maryland to help “Hastings” the harbor seal with his oceanic return! Hastings suffered severe lacerations to his front flipper, but thanks to months of rehabilitation by The National Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Program (MARP), he was rescued, rehabilitated and safely released back to sea. The public can track his progress at www. aqua. org/trackhastings. html.

Ocean City, MD (Vocus) May 14, 2010

National Aquarium staff and volunteers were joined by community members on the beach in Ocean City, Maryland to help “Hastings” the harbor seal with his oceanic return! Hastings suffered severe lacerations to his front flipper, but thanks to months of rehabilitation by The National Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Program (MARP), he was rescued, rehabilitated and safely released back to sea. The public can track his progress at http://www. aqua. org/trackhastings. html (http://www. aqua. org/trackhastings. html).

The juvenile male harbor seal was stranded along the Atlantic coast of Maryland, in the town of Ocean City, on January 15, 2010. MARP responded, and the seal was admitted to the National Aquarium for rehabilitation. Upon admission, the seal was underweight, severely dehydrated, mildly emaciated, and medically compromised due to a wound behind the left front flipper. In addition to the wound, he was found to have an upper respiratory infection and a mild case of pneumonia at the time of being admitted for rehab.

The seal, called Hastings, was treated with antibiotics for several weeks, and his wound was treated every three days for two weeks. Hastings responded well to treatment and was soon interacting with enrichment devices, the animal equivalent of toys, and eagerly eating. While in rehab, Hastings gained nearly 20 pounds on a daily diet of herring and capelin.

“Hastings overcame many challenges while in rehabilitation, and we have every reason to believe that he will have a successful reintroduction back into his natural environment,” says MARP stranding coordinator Jennifer Dittmar, “We strive to return these stranded animals to the ocean as soon as they are ready, and to minimize contact while they are in our care, in order to avoid them coming to associate humans with food.”

Upon release, the healthy seal weighed 71 pounds and was eating 7 lbs of fish a day. He was named Hastings by the Pettus-Crowe Foundation, a private donor who funded a satellite tracking tag for the seal. The satellite tag was affixed to his fur so Aquarium staff and researchers can learn more about seal migration and travel patterns. The public is invited to follow Hastings’ progress by viewing a satellite map of his travels at the Aquarium’s website at http://www. aqua. org/trackhastings (http://www. aqua. org/trackhastings). Information will be gathered until the adhesive fails and the tag falls off.

This is the 83rd animal released by the National Aquarium. Formed in 1991 and staffed almost entirely by volunteers, the Marine Animal Rescue Program (MARP) is the cornerstone of the National Aquarium's ocean health initiative. Formed in 1991 and staffed almost entirely by volunteers, MARP’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and release stranded animals back into the natural environment whenever possible; share knowledge with the scientific community; and provide public educational programs through special events and presentations. MARP has successfully rescued, treated, and returned seals, dolphins, porpoises, pilot whales, pygmy sperm whales, sea turtles, and a manatee to their natural habitats.

Many of MARP’s patients are sick or injured due to human-related activities like boat strikes, gear entanglement or plastic ingestion. Weather, malnourishment, exhaustion and pollution also contribute to strandings. Rescuing and studying stranded animals provides vital information about the status of the ocean and coastal environments, as well as the biology and health of the animals that live in those environments.

The public in invited to help with the National Aquarium’s marine animal rehabilitation efforts. Txt ACT to 20222 to make a $5 donation. Msg & data rates apply or visit http://www. aqua. org (http://www. aqua. org).

Through transforming experiences, the National Aquarium inspires people to enjoy, respect, and protect the aquatic world. It is dedicated to education and conservation through more than a dozen programs that serve the environment and the community.

The National Aquarium is a member of the Northeast Region of the National Stranding Network through an agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Service. Musician-Environmentalist Jon Hartmann Addresses America's Oil Addiction with President George W. Bush Rap "Start A Business

Musician-Environmentalist Jon Hartmann Addresses America's Oil Addiction with President George W. Bush Rap "Start A Business

Artist responsibility. Freedom of Speech. Clarity through words. When politics, the environment and music meet, Jon Hartmann gets his message across through his artistry.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 30, 2007

President George W. Bush (PGWB) a Rap artist? With the Internet swarming with PGWB parodies, it was time to exercise the First U. S. Amendment, "Freedom of Speech" utilizing clearer communication about war, profits and the environmental impact. Writer-Producer-Musician-Environmentalist, Jon Hartmann has released "George Bush Sings" in a rap-funk-groove download on http://cdbaby. com/cd/jonhartmann4 (http://cdbaby. com/cd/jonhartmann4), featuring tracks, "Don't Believe Me," "Let Us Bomb," "Stay The Course," "My Heart Breaks," and "Start A Business" which talks about America's addiction to oil. Other new tracks will be added to the site for download as they are produced.

"George Bush Sings is an audio outing for those of us who happen to notice that the emperor's suit hides nothing. It was my thinking that if the Office of the President had truly become a theatre of the absurd, where words had no meaning, then it was time to arrange the order of the President's words so that they may better reflect the truth" states Hartmann. "This country has always had difficulty escaping the influence of big oil. The way we built our cities and the reasons we went to war were most often at the request and benefit of the folks at the petroleum concerns. Many of the decisions made by government were in the best interest of the oil stockholders but may have been disastrous for the well-being of the planet. At a time when government must take the initiative to fundamentally change our energy and environmental policy, we have a president whose background in the oil business suggests that he may not have been suited to the task of leading the nation away from it's addiction to oil. This president stated that he was a uniter, not a divider, and yet he has done more than any American president to polarize and disrupt the social fabric of the United States. Start A Business is Bush's version of "let them eat cake," Hartmann explains.

Hartmann's last album, "Pacific Electric," pays tribute to Los Angeles' long-lost Pacific Electric Railway and Hartmann's thoughts of energy, policy and interest of expanding rail service between and inside cities to promote healthier air and trying to understand the removal of the Pacific Electric Railway. His previous albums, "3 if By Air" and "The 10th House" both featured CD cover graphics which reflect Hartmann's passionate visual statement about the fragile nature of the orb we populate. He feels fossil fuels have no place in our future. "If we continue to burn them at the current rate, two things will happen as sure as night follows day.....our economy will be disrupted beyond repair, and our planet, likewise, may be damaged sufficiently to induce global catastrophe," states Hartmann.

Hartmann is a songwriter, musician, producer, music publisher and record label executive whose career has encompassed touring the world. From his first overseas gig in Southeast Asia to entertain soldiers for the USO, to performing with Ike & Tina Turner in Germany with the Rolling Stones as audience spectators. Jon was signed as a writer in 1975 for Peacock Music, where he and Jimmy Whitney co-wrote "Goodness Knows," recorded that year by Michael Jackson. He's currently producing his own works and others elaborating on his environmental beliefs as an activist and musical artist on his own independent label, Jon Hartmann Records.

For interviews, review copies and additional information, call Publicist, Stacey Kumagai at 818/506-8675 or email. To order Jon Hartmann's music CDs, go to www. cdbaby. com or go to www. jonhartmannmusic. com

Thousands of LPNs in BC Show Interest in Joining BCNU

Thousands of LPNs in BC Show Interest in Joining BCNU

New membership rights make practical nursing careers even more lucrative

Vancouver, BC (Vocus) September 17, 2009

The British Columbia Nurses’ Union recently opened the door to Licensed Practical Nurses who were interested in joining the union as full members with collective bargaining rights. With thousands of LPNs lining up for the new privileges, the time has never been better to enter the practical nursing field.

"With LPNs now able to join the BCNU as full members, the field of practical nursing will become even more desirable,” says Rose Pollock, Practical Nursing Program Coordinator at Vancouver Career College. “If pay and benefits increase for LPNs, it will definitely help legitimize LPNs hard work in this province."

The new regulations will help the thousands of new LPNs entering the nursing field in the next few years. The Canadian Occupational Projection System estimates that 2,403 LPN jobs will open up in BC by 2013, which means there’s still plenty of time for those interested in practical nursing.

Vancouver Career College offers its 52-week Practical Nursing program at campus locations in Burnaby, Abbotsford and Kelowna, making it a very accessible option for students in BC.

Once students have graduated, they must write the CLPNBC Licensing Exam, which certifies them to work as nurses in British Columbia. Now with the ability to join the BCNU, LPNs will be seen as a more important part of the health care system, and will likely be able to bargain on better benefits and wages.

Vancouver Career College is now accepting applications for the Practical Nursing program in Burnaby, Kelowna and Abbotsford. Students can choose from November 2009 and January 2010 start dates. Visit http://www. vccollege. ca (http://www. vccollege. ca) for more information.

The Truth About Vitamin Tablets: In this day and age of health a lot of us take some sort of multi-vitamin to supplement the nutritional needs that our body requires

The Truth About Vitamin Tablets: In this day and age of health a lot of us take some sort of multi-vitamin to supplement the nutritional needs that our body requires.

Did you know that most vitamin tablets don't disolve in your digestive system.

(PRWEB) July 24, 2004

But did you know that most commercial vitamins can be found un-dissolved in septic tanks. 90% of most vitamins are not dissolved in the digestive system. If vitamins donÂ’t dissolve quickly, they bypass the first part of the small intestine where most nutrients are absorbed. Use a cup of water with a tablespoon of vinager if in 30 minutes the vitamin is not disolved then you are not getting the full benefit of your vitamin.

Do a search on google. com for "Dicalcium Phosphate in Vitamins" (DCH) and you will find this in most vitamins. Dicalcium Phosphate is inorganic and is used as a binder which is not easily broken down. Find an alternate solution here:

They simply need the right tools, the right services and the right training.

On Sunday, May 21, 2006, National Association for Visually Handicapped (NAVH) will host its 33rd Annual Public Awareness Showcase and Counseling Center for the Visually Impaired at Einhorn Auditorium in Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.

Boots Becomes Exclusive Stockist of Celebrity Makeup Artist Cosmetics Brand

Boots Becomes Exclusive Stockist of Celebrity Makeup Artist Cosmetics Brand

Boots. com gain exclusive stockist status for myface. cosmetics the new cosmetics brand from renowned makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury.

(PRWEB) October 26, 2008

Charlotte Tilbury is one of the most influential make-up artists in the world, whose client roster includes Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, Gwen Stefani and Drew Barrymore, to name but a few. She is now allowing every woman "access" to her professional expertise with the launch of the make-up brand myface. cosmetics that syncs a person's make-up with their skin tone.

Boots (http://www. boots. com/ (http://www. boots. com/)) will be stocking myface. comestics exclusively on its website, which is the UK's number one health and beauty online retailer.

Combining the expertise of a high profile make-up artist with high quality products and high-tech packaging, myface. cosmetics has ceremoniously ended mass confusion in the make-up aisles. By merchandising colours and shades according to skintone, both online and in store, myface. cosmetics creates an easy-to-shop user-friendly experience.

Charlotte believes that the vast majority of women are concerned with the make-up colours that most suit them, rather than application techniques, and therefore the range is based on this insight, with each shade picked to work with a specific skin tone - fair, medium and medium/dark.

Charlotte Tilbury said: "The most common question people ask me is 'What colour lip gloss, blush etc. would you use on my face?' The right colours dramatically enhance your overall appearance and the wrong ones can really detract." This refreshingly prescriptive approach to make up (http://www. boots. com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay? catalogId=11051&categoryId=4711&langId=-1&storeId=10052 (http://www. boots. com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay? catalogId=11051&categoryId=4711&langId=-1&storeId=10052)) seems blindingly obvious and yet has never been done before.

The range consists of ten lines, from light ethereal foundations to lip pop gloss and upload mascara for loaded lashes. Each line has shades that are recommended for each of the skin types.

Celeste Sinclair, Beauty Buyer for boots. com said, "We are so excited to have myface cosmetics (http://www. boots. com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay? categoryParentId=3633&langId=-1&storeId=10052&catalogId=11051&categoryId=38342 (http://www. boots. com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay? categoryParentId=3633&langId=-1&storeId=10052&catalogId=11051&categoryId=38342)) as an exclusive brand on our site. Charlotte has earned iconic status in the fashion & beauty world and we know that our customers who are self-confessed 'beauty addicts' are absolutely going to love this new brand with such inspirational expertise behind it."

New England Fertility Celebrates 20th Anniversary by Introducing Gift of Hope Financial Program

New England Fertility Celebrates 20th Anniversary by Introducing Gift of Hope Financial Program

New England Fertility the first non hospital based fertility center in Connecticut, is celebrating 20 years of providing care to individuals and couples struggling with infertility. In honor of this milestone, New England Fertility will be offering qualifying patients 20 percent off the cost of fertility treatment through the Gift of Hope Program. The Gift of Hope program was established as a way to give back - and give hope to those who are having difficulty conceiving. By offering the Gift of Hope Program, New England Fertility hopes to make fertility treatment more affordable to those who have limited personal resources or are without insurance.

Stamford, CT (PRWEB) December 2, 2010

Program in honor of fertility clinic’s 20th anniversary provides qualifying patients 20 percent off fertility treatment

New England Fertility, a leading fertility clinic with offices in Stamford, Hamden, and Shelton, Connecticut, in honor of its 20th anniversary announced today that it would be offering qualifying patients 20 percent off the cost of fertility treatment through its Gift of Hope program.

Committed to providing patients from Connecticut, the United States, and around the world with the best assisted reproduction technologies and care for 20 years, New England Fertility created the Gift of Hope program as a way to give back – and give hope – to patients dealing with infertility, and help them achieve their dream of starting a family. Specifically, the Gift of Hope program was designed to help make fertility treatments more affordable by offering a 20 percent discount to our patients who have no insurance coverage and limited personal resources to cover the out-of-pocket expenses.

“Creating families has been the lifelong goal of New England Fertility,” said Dr. Gad Lavy, the founder and medical director of New England Fertility. “And we have been extremely successful in helping individuals and couples struggling with infertility to achieve that goal. Now, by creating a program that helps make the cost of fertility treatment more affordable, we can help more patients conceive and deliver a healthy baby.”

Enrollment in the Gift of Hope program opens on January 1, 2011, and closes on December 31, 2011. Procedures covered include IUI cycles, IVF cycles, and donor egg and surrogacy cycles.

Gift of Hope Program Eligibility Criteria:

O Annual household income must be $100,000 or less based on last 2 years U. S. federal tax returns (75% weighting toward most recent year).
O Patient must be under the age of 51 and meet normal medical criteria for desired treatment.
O Patient must be enrolled in program prior to baseline sonogram or cycle synchronization with a donor or gestational carrier.
O Patient’s insurance will not cover treatment/procedures or patient is uninsured.

About New England Fertility

New England Fertility was founded in 1991 by Dr. Gad Lavy with the goal of providing state-of-the-art fertility treatment to couples and individuals seeking help conceiving. New England Fertility was the first non-hospital-based outpatient in vitro fertilization (IVF) center in the state of Connecticut, as well as the first infertility treatment center in Connecticut to have a baby born from a cryopreserved egg. New England Fertility was also a pioneer in providing innovative fertility therapies such as ICSI, PGD, and egg freezing, and is recognized as one of the largest egg donor/gestational surrogacy programs in Fairfield County, Connecticut. XenaCare Holdings Announces Expansion of National Advertising Campaign for its Over-the-Counter (OTC) Pain Reliever, Cobroxin, as Retailer Commitments Grow

XenaCare Holdings has announced that it will be supporting the rapidly-growing network of retailers carrying its over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever, Cobroxin, by expanding its multimillion dollar national marketing campaign to include direct response mailings, television commercials, national sponsorships, and additional print advertising.

Delray Beach, FL (Vocus) January 20, 2010

XenaCare Holdings, Inc. (http://www. XenaCareHoldings. com) (OTCBB:XCHO), a company specializing in the marketing and retail distribution of consumer healthcare products, announced today that it is expanding its multimillion dollar national advertising campaign to include direct response mailings, television commercials, national sponsorships and additional print advertising to support the rapidly growing network of retailers carrying Cobroxin (http://www. Cobroxin. com), an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever clinically proven to treat moderate to severe (Stage 2) chronic pain.

“We introduced Cobroxin, through e-commerce websites, during the last quarter of 2009. This quarter, we are pleased to report that the product has been reviewed and accepted by 40% of the 105,000 retail stores selling healthcare products across the United States, as reported by Chain Drug Review magazine,” said Frank Rizzo, President and CEO of XenaCare Holdings. “We anticipate the average retailer will place an opening order of $80 per store location. With analgesic products producing up to 21 inventory turnovers per year, the upside potential is dramatic and very exciting for Cobroxin,” he concluded.

In addition to its current print advertising campaign, XenaCare Holdings has purchased advertising in several men’s, women’s and specialty magazines. These advertisements are scheduled to debut in February and are projected to generate approximately 108 million reader impressions over the next 3 months. Cobroxin will also be featured in several printed retail catalogs, reaching approximately 18 million households throughout the United States.

Recently, the Company became a National Proud Sponsor of the Arthritis Foundation. This sponsorship allows XenaCare Holdings to use the Foundation’s logo on packaging, websites, print advertisements, retail catalogs and when sending out direct mailers to 100,000 Arthritis Foundation members. XenaCare Holdings plans to continue strengthening its relationship with the Arthritis Foundation and supporting the Foundation’s mission throughout 2010.

In October, the Company announced that it would be advertising in the official annual publication of NASCAR, which reaches approximately 8,000,000 attendees, as well as the NFL Alumni Guide Program and Yearbook. The Company recently expanded this targeted outreach to include advertising in the upcoming 2010 Super Bowl XLIV program guide and the 2010 NBA All-Star Game program guide.

Cobroxin will also be featured in direct response advertising with 60 second spots beginning in late January 2010.

Finally, XenaCare Holdings has begun production for a series of television commercials scheduled to air in April. Additional details regarding these commercials will be released in the near-term.

Cobroxin is currently available to independent pharmacy owners through the Chain Drug Marketing Association (CDMA), one of the largest pharmacy organizations representing more than 6,000 retail outlets throughout 32 states. Additionally, Cobroxin will be sold through most mass market retailers, including major drugstore chains and supermarkets, as well as online at Cobroxin. com, Amazon. com, Overstock. com and Drugstore. com.

Cobroxin is the first over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever (http://www. Cobroxin. com) clinically proven to treat moderate to severe (Stage 2) chronic pain. Many other Stage 2 drugs require prescriptions, including Tylenol 3, Percocet, and Vicodin. The drug is currently available as an oral spray for treating migraine headaches, neck aches, shoulder pain, cramps, lower back pain, and neuralgia and is also available as a topical gel for treating joint pain and pain associated with repetitive stress and arthritis.

Additional benefits to Cobroxin include:
All Natural Non-Addictive Non-Narcotic Non-Opiate More Potent than Morphine Long Lasting XenaCare Holdings was granted the exclusive license by Nutra Pharma Corporation (OTCBB:NPHC) to market and distribute Cobroxin within the United States.

Is There Healing in Mysticism?

Is There Healing in Mysticism?

The Circle of the Healing Drum is pleased to announce their inaugural event, “Healing Through Mysticism.” The Circle of the Healing Drum is an active newly formed mystic circle in Bend, OR. They invoke the ancient practices of working with ones body energy field to heal emotionally, spiritually, and physically through use of drums and teachings, sometimes referred to as shamanic healing.

Bend, OR (PRWEB) January 17, 2005

Shamanic healing is a spiritual and energetic method of healing that deals with the spiritual aspect of illness. There are three common causes of illness, in the shamanÂ’s worldview. A person may have lost his or her power, causing depression, chronic illness, or a series of misfortunes. In this case, the shaman journeys to restore that personÂ’s lost power.

Over tens of thousands of years, mankind’s ancient ancestors all over the world discovered how to maximize human abilities of mind and spirit for healing and problem-solving. This remarkable system of methods has developed into what is know today as "shamanism," a term that comes from a Siberian tribal word for its practitioners: "shaman" (pronounced SHAH-mahn). The word shaman comes through Russian from the Evenk people of Siberia (referred to as Tungus by Russians). It is sometimes spelled saman, but shaman is more accurate. For much too long, Spirit has been left out of Western medicine. Now's a chance to bring Spirit back and assist in healing and living a longer, healthier life - through these shamans' ancient healing practices. The Circle of the Healing Drum will be exploring and teaching these principals in their inaugural workshop event, “Healing Through Mysticism”, on February 5th, 2005.

Institute of HeartMath® Feeds Food for Thought with Science of Thanksgiving Gratitude

Institute of HeartMath® Feeds Food for Thought with Science of Thanksgiving Gratitude

The Institute of HeartMath explains the science behind gratitude and offers a free appreciation exercise and e-book.

Boulder Creek, CA (PRWEB) November 16, 2010

Measuring someone's gratitude is quite literally possible with today's cutting-edge science and technology. So how exactly do you measure gratitude - scientifically?

Offering some food for thought this Thanksgiving - apart from turkey and mashed potatoes - the Institute of HeartMath® (IHM), a recognized leader in researching the physiology of emotions, is serving up a belt-buster when it comes to the latest understanding of gratitude.

The institute has been studying human emotions for nearly 20 years, among them gratitude and appreciation, emotions that are at the heart of an American holiday whose roots date back to 1621.

According to research at IHM, true feelings of gratitude, appreciation and other positive emotions can synchronize brain and heart rhythms, creating a bodywide shift to a scientifically measurable state called coherence. In this optimal state, the body's systems function more efficiently, generating a greater balance of emotions and increased mental clarity and brain function.

The level of coherence you experience during feelings of appreciation can be measured by sensitive instruments. Coherence also can be measured using heart-rate variability (HRV) - the naturally occurring beat-to-beat changes in heart rate, which can be see in an electrocardiogram (ECG).

This method of measuring appreciation is much more precise than attempting to guess by observing how much someone is smiling. Measuring coherence can accurately show heart, brain and nervous system interactions that are sensitive to changes in emotions.

While an individual - smiling or not - is experiencing coherence, the heart rhythm appears as a smooth wave-like pattern on an HRV graph. Contrast coherence with incoherence, created by negative emotions such as frustration and anger, and this can often disrupt the synchronization of the body's systems and create jagged or chaotic patterns on a graph.

Advanced research at the Institute of HeartMath and other elsewhere has provided evidence that gratitude is not simply a nice sentiment or feeling. Sustained feelings of gratitude have real benefits, including the following:
Biochemical changes - Favorable changes in the body's biochemistry include improved hormonal balance and an increase in production of DHEA, the "anti-aging hormone."

Increased positivity - Daily gratitude exercises can bring about a greater level of positive feelings, according to researchers from the University of Miami and the University of California, Davis who studied this process in 157 individuals over 13 days.

Boost to the immune system - The IgA antibody, which serves as the first line of defense against pathogens, increases in the body.

Emotional "compound interest" - The accumulated effect of sustained appreciation and gratitude is that these feelings, and coherence, are easier to recreate with continued practice. This is because experiencing an emotion reinforces the neural pathways of that particular emotion as it excites the brain, heart and nervous system. The downside is that you also can reinforce negative emotions.

Thankfully, gratitude and appreciation can create their own positive psychophysiological holiday in your body - without the necessity of a feast.

For some this holiday, the appreciation equation might be something like gobble + gobble = thank you and naptime. Sincere self-evoked feelings of gratitude and appreciation, however, are the only ingredients needed, as explained by IHM founder Doc Childre and Director of Research Dr. Rollin McCraty in the e-book, The Appreciative Heart: The Psychophysiology of Positive Emotions and Optimal Functioning.

This publication, which can be downloaded from a special link (http://www. facebook. com/InstituteofHeartMath) by liking IHM's Facebook fan page, explains how emotions are reflected in heart rhythms and creating a change in those rhythms can result in quick and substantial changes in whatever emotional state you may be experiencing.

The Institute of HeartMath is helping more people experience the benefits of the sincere feelings Thanksgiving celebrates by providing the following helpful exercise:

Appreciation Exercise
Instructions: Take a few short appreciation breaks during the day. During each break take one or two minutes to breathe deeply through the area of the heart. While doing so, try to hold a sincere feeling of appreciation in your heart area. This can be appreciation for a family member, friend who helped you with something or even a wonderful vacation, etc.

Why it works: The exercise of activating a positive feeling like appreciation literally shifts our physiology, helping to balance our heart rhythms and nervous system, and creates more coherence between the heart, brain and rest of the body.

Gratitude is a simple and effective practice and the benefits are real and attainable, thanks to modern science. Gratitude creates a healthier, happier and more fulfilling state of being for anyone who takes a few moments to feel and reflect on it.

You can follow the Institute of HeartMath on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for more resources and updates. The institute also offers free tips and tools for parents, teachers, caregivers and those who work with children on its HeartMath My Kids! Facebook page (http://www. facebook. com/HeartMathMyKids).

About the Institute of HeartMath:
The Institute of HeartMath, http://www. heartmath. org, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and education organization dedicated to teaching the principles of heart-based living around the world and promoting global coherence by inspiring people to connect with the intelligence and guidance of their hearts. IHM has been conducting scientific research on the physiology of emotions and the science of the heart for nearly two decades. A world leader in stress reduction and emotion-management research, IHM was founded in 1991 by Doc Childre. Through its research and education divisions, the institute has developed practical tools, education programs and services - collectively known as the HeartMath System - for the mental, emotional and physical benefit of children through seniors without regard to their social, economic or cultural status.
