Offered as a simultaneous satellite broadcast, webcast, and telephone audioconference premiering Wednesday, August 12, 2009, from 12:00 p. m.-1:00 p. m. ET, the activity will identify and utilize evidence-based management strategies to improve outcomes for patients with schizophrenia. This activity also includes a special "After the Show" segment from 1:00 p. m.-1:30 p. m. ET during which the faculty answers additional audience questions in an informal Q&A session. The recorded webcast will re-air from 3:00 p. m.-4:00 p. m. ET on August 12, and will be repeated at noon ET on September 9 and October 7, 2009. This CE activity will also be available on demand as a webcast, podcast, and telephone audioconference shortly after the broadcast premiere.

Statement of Need:
Schizophrenia is notable for its substantial impact on everyday functioning, being one of the top five causes of disability in individuals under the age of 25. In most cases, individuals who develop schizophrenia manifest behavioral changes prior to the formal diagnosis of the condition. These changes, referred to as the "prodrome," are variable across individuals who may eventually develop schizophrenia. Proactive risk assessment in other chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and cancer has brought about advances in early detection and intervention leading to substantial reductions in morbidity, mortality, and improved quality of life. It is imperative that this type of proactive intervention becomes part of timely diagnosis and better outcomes for patients with schizophrenia.
Clinicians face challenges designing treatment plans for patients with schizophrenia that will maximize adherence and reduce side effects. Relapse rates tend to be quite predictable, can be affected by adherence, and have multiple adverse consequences. Minimizing relapse requires a coordinated effort between the patient, provider, family, and multidisciplinary treatment team. In this interactive neuroscienceCME activity, faculty will focus on the impact of treatment selection, phase of illness, medication adherence, and side effect burden on the journey toward remission and recovery in schizophrenia.

Utilize available tools and evidence base to improve early recognition of schizophrenia. Identify the key considerations that may impact adherence and outcomes when creating a treatment plan. Create a treatment plan that includes patients, families, and the treatment team and utilizes the Competency Assessment Instrument to focus on recovery.
