Great Neck, N. Y. (PRWEB) November 1, 2006

Need another incentive to stay healthy? How about a cash prize awarded monthly to defer the cost of a health club, buy some healthy food, or pay for his and her full body massages?

Beginning November 1, Health Site Guide, http://www. healthsiteguide. com (http://www. healthsiteguide. com), the unique healthcare information portal with direct links to information on hundreds of health concerns as they appear on dozens of recognized health sites, will be awarding a monthly visitor $250 in their "Cash for Health" sweepstakes.

There's no obligation, nothing to buy and no surveys to fill out. Visitors simply join Health Site Guide for free by providing a "nickname" and password of their choice (no personal information is required to join), and they can enter the sweepstakes. As a member, in addition to fast access to health concern information, and special features like videos, animations and interactive tools, members can view today's medical news (by category), write blogs, participate in forums and more.

Featuring overviews of sites that include WebMD, MerckSource, Mayo Clinic and many recognized health websites including leading US government sites, Health Site Guide was created to take the search out of searching, and provide easy-to-access, fast results by linking viewers to exactly what they need.

Now in its fourth month since the official launch, Health Site Guide is making a difference for people who haven't decided on a specific health site, and don't want to search endlessly for information.

As one user commented "Everything is there, categorized by health concerns A to Z, and that helps when I really need information fast. The search engines are still far too broad-based."

Commenting on the benefits of Health Site Guide, Bob Lipp, co-creator, said, "There are a lot of great health sites, but unless someone has chosen one, the results of their search can be daunting as they try to figure out which site is right for them. We've taken the guesswork out by pre-searching dozens of recognized sites, and providing overviews on each; as well as direct links to hundreds of health concerns and special features like video, animation and much more. The Cash for Health Sweepstakes is another way to thank our visitors for their support."

Sweepstakes information is available on the home page of Health Site Guide, near the top of the page.

Coconut Water: A Hot Trend For Health Nuts

Coconut Water: A Hot Trend For Health Nuts

Dr. Tim's Juices Touts Advantages of Coconut Water

Saint George, UT (PRWEB) October 29, 2010

A couple of years back Dr. Timothy Hollingshead experienced firsthand the hydration benefits of coconut water while traveling down a tributary of the Amazon River in a dugout canoe.

The former podiatric surgeon was searching remote areas of Brazil for acai fruit sources to be used in a drink produced by his St. George-based company, Dr. Tim's Juices. Although he had served a mission for his church in Brazil many years earlier, Hollingshead discovered that he was trying to stay hydrated in the equatorial climate.

Some Brazilians traveling with Hollingshead inspired him to try some coconut water they had with them. He claims the positive results were speedy.

Immediately I felt better, he says. My thirst was gone. I stopped sweating. I got my focus back.

It was then he realized that he could do something commercially with coconut juice.

Upon returning to the U. S., Hollingshead began researching coconut juice, which is present in young coconuts. It isn't the same substance as coconut milk, which is culled from the fruit of more mature coconuts.

During his research, Hollingshead revealed that coconut juice had been employed as a temporary intravenous drip during World War II because the juice contains lots of the same characteristics as blood plasma. The IV stem would run from the coconut itself through tubes to a needle in the arm of an infantryman.

“It's sterile so they were able to stick an IV stem in there”, he indicated.

Hollingshead began working on assorted formulations and at last developed ISO-5, a sports drink like Gatorade, where coconut water is the first ingredient. The three major coconut water drinks include Vita Coco, Zico and O. N.E.

Vita Coco incorporates a few stars among its investors while Coca-Cola has a minority stake in Zico and Pepsi distributes O. N.E. In some states. Hollingshead says his product is a grassroots rival with room to grow in the rapidly developing market.

“Coconut water is really a growing trend right now”, he said. “Coconut water is going to play a vital role in the hydration market in the years to come.”

Like other sports drinks, ISO-5 contains electrolytes needed for rehydration like potassium and sodium. Kristeen Bybee, a diet therapist for Dixie Regional Hospital, says coconut water has substantial amounts of both potassium and sodium.

In addition, coconut water has a low quantity of sugar with only 23 calories in a half cup. This is one aspect where coconut water is not like coconut milk, that it has 276 calories in a half cup and 29 grams of fat. Coconut water is largely fat free, Bybee asserts.

ISO-5 starts to make inroads in professional athletics through one outstanding ice hockey team. Hollingshead claims the Chicago Blackhawks the defending Stanley Cup champions have been using the drink for three seasons now.

Dr. Tim's Juices is even working with the Blackhawks' trainers and their dietitian to develop a new protein drink called Pro ISO-5. Hollingshead says this drink fuses the electrolytes from coconut water with protein for better cellular uptake.

We will be able to use less protein and get more of an effect than in a conventional protein drink, he asserts.

However, one problem sportsmen have noticed with coconut water is that the heavier fluid seems to sit in their stomachs, Hollingshead claims. With his company's coconut water beverages they discovered a way around this difficulty by developing a system called cryoflux, which freezes the water out of the juice to create concentrate from fresh coconuts in the source nations. The process preserves the bioactive constituents, the flavor and color of juice from any fruit, according to Dr. Tim's website.

Dr. Tim's Juices imports the concentrate from the source states and manufactures it here in St. George, creating a lighter drink than other coconut water drinks through this process.

Hollingshead asserts other benefits include about half of the sugar content of standard sports drinks and a 100 percent natural chemistry. Yet it comes in a variety of flavors like Gatorade or Powerade.

When comparing the product to other coconut water drinks, Hollingshead claims ISO-5 is lighter, better-tasting and more functional than its bigger-named competitors. He says those benefits will help them compete with the larger brands as Dr. Tim's Juices grows.

The company just signed its 1st acquisition order Wed. with Kehe Food Distributors, a nationwide distribution company.

Dr. Tim's offices are found a little to the south of Dixie State University and the producing plant is in the Fort Pierce Industrial Park south of Bloomington Hills.

Scott Van Orden, the chief operating officer for Dr. Tim's Juices, says the company hopes to be in a position to create local jobs as it grows.

Its products can be found in about 1,000 retail stores countrywide and through Utah at supermarkets like Harmons Food store, many Albertsons stores and some Associated Foods outlets like Lin's.

The Marine Mammal Center Hosts First "Home for the Holidays" Open House December 11, 2010

The Marine Mammal Center Hosts First "Home for the Holidays" Open House December 11, 2010

Watch the whale film “In the Wake of Giants”, learn how the experts rescue seals and sea lions, and take a family photo with Frannie the Fur Seal!

Sausalito, CA (PRWEB) December 1, 2010

The public is invited to The Marine Mammal Center’s first “Home for the Holidays” open house at its new facility in Sausalito to learn more about the Center and its work as volunteers and staff help to get patients healthy so they can return “Home for the Holidays.” The event will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2010, from 10 a. m. - 5 p. m. Visitors will be treated to a wide range of free activities of interest for all ages as well as a gift with purchase in the gift shop, while supplies last, and a rare photo opportunity with Frannie the Fur Seal. An expanded schedule of Docent-Led tours will also be available.

“Our mission is to expand knowledge about marine mammals – their health and that of their ocean environment – and to inspire their global conservation. What better way to work toward this goal than an open house that offers a chance to connect with the community,” explained Jeff Boehm, executive director of The Marine Mammal Center. “By engaging with the community, we strengthen this symbiotic partnership by making new relationships and reinforcing already established ones.”

Schedule of Day’s Events:
12:30 p. m. and 2:30 p. m. – Reading and book signing for Astro: The Steller Sea Lion with author Jeanne Harvey
1:30 p. m. and 3:30 p. m. – Film screening of In the Wake of Giants and Q&A with executive producers
11 a. m., 1 p. m. and 3 p. m. – Docent-Led Tours (book early at http://www. marinemammalcenter. org)

One of the much anticipated events that day is the screening of the documentary “In the Wake of Giants.” The film is about humpback whale rescues in Hawaii and features experts freeing whales from ocean trash that the animals have become entangled in and dragged for thousands of miles. Much of the exciting footage was filmed from helmet-mounted cameras as the rescue efforts took place. In 2009, approximately 11% of the 1,706 seal and sea lion patients were admitted to The Marine Mammal Center as a result of an entanglement or ocean trash-related injury. On December 11, visitors will also have a chance to meet the film’s Executive Producers Mara Kerr and Mark DiOrio. The documentary won the award for Best National Marine Sanctuary Short at the 2010 Blue Ocean Film Festival in Monterey.

The open house will include an opportunity for children to enjoy a story time reading of the book Astro: The Steller Sea Lion by author Jeanne Harvey who will also sign books. This delightful story tells about the rescue of Astro, a former patient, who wandered ashore at a local school. In addition, demonstrations of simulated animal rescues and tube feedings will take place throughout the day.

The highly popular Docent-Led tours times have been expanded for the holidays. November 29-December 17 tours will take place on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a. m., 1 p. m., and 3 p. m., and Mondays and Fridays at 1 p. m. and 3 p. m. December 18 - January 2, tours will be available daily at 11 a. m., 1 p. m., and 3p. m. Docents will share fascinating tales about former seal and sea lion patients while guiding visitors around the exhibits and animal viewing areas. Tours are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, free for children who are 4 years old and younger, and $5 for members and their guest.

Visitors can also get their holiday shopping started early at the gift shop. All purchases fund the work of the Center. Open house visitors who spend $30 or more in the gift shop will receive a free canvas tote bag while supplies last.

In addition, Frannie the Fur Seal will make a rare appearance and is available for photographs – perfect for family holiday greeting cards!

Ando Corporation to Unveil IndustryÂ’s First High-Performance OC-48c MPLS Probe for Carrier IP Core Networks at Networld + Interop in Las Vegas on May 7-9

Ando Corporation to Unveil IndustryÂ’s First High-Performance OC-48c MPLS Probe for Carrier IP Core Networks at Networld + Interop in Las Vegas on May 7-9

Ando Will Exhibit the ProbeÂ’s Unparalleled MPLS and IP Reporting Capabilities with an OC-48c Traffic Generator and Standard Network Management Solutions in Booth #1809

(PRWEB) May 4, 2002

San Jose, CA, May 1st, 2002 – Ando Corporation’s IP Products Division today announced plans to exhibit a demo of its Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) upgrade for the first-to-market AU1500 IP Core Network Probe for OC-48c Packet-over-SONET (POS) networks at Networld + Interop in the Las Vegas Convention Center on May 7-9.

AndoÂ’s AU1500 already provides IP carriers and ISPs with unsurpassed layer 2-7 detailed traffic monitoring for high-speed IP core networks with its unique hardware accelerated design and industry standard RMON2 and SNMP reporting. With the addition of the MPLS upgrade, the AU1500 now also offers IP carriers unrivaled reporting capabilities to effectively monitor and manage their MPLS networks as well as implement exciting new MPLS based services. The AU1500 is the industryÂ’s first OC-48c MPLS probe that monitors MPLS label-switched path (LSP) and MPLS VPN traffic. The detailed MPLS statistics provided by the AU1500 include volume (packets and bytes), protocol distribution, class of service (CoS), and TopN by MPLS forwarding label, by MPLS VPN label and by a combination of the two.

“Ando is very excited to be the first solution provider to offer a robust monitoring and management tool for MPLS network management,” says Hiroyuki Sato, general manager of Ando Corporation’s IP Products Division. “MPLS is currently a carrier core technology of choice for not only enhancing the performance of their networks, but also enabling advanced services such as VPNs and SLAs based on classes of service (CoS). Ando offers the only tool that will allow them to effectively monitor, manage and, most importantly, optimize their MPLS networks at up to OC-48c.”

Ando’s demo at Networld + Interop will employ “live” traffic provided by an OC-48c traffic generator operating in both IP and MPLS modes. Industry standard reporting and management tools, including Concord Communication’s eHealth ™ Suite, will be used to showcase the AU1500’s MPLS, IP, and RMON2 statistical output in real-time. Ando will also have sales engineering staff on hand to discuss compelling real world applications for the AU1500, such as advanced SLA management; traffic engineering, LSP sizing, route optimization, and capacity planning based on real time statistics; network health and management; usage based billing between peering providers; SLA verification; and advanced MPLS management.

AndoÂ’s hardware-accelerated AU1500 IP Core Network Probe is centered around a sophisticated statistical engine that offers true wire speed performance and reliability. Additionally, the AU1500 is a passive device deployed independently of existing network equipment that offers detailed, layer-2 and above information without impacting router performance. Moreover, since the AU1500 does not require proprietary management or reporting software, the AU1500 can be readily integrated into IP carriers existing network management toolset for ease of deployment.

“The AU1500 with the MPLS upgrade is arriving in the marketplace just in time to help IP carriers who are looking to reduce capital expenditures and overhead while at the same time increasing their bottom line through new revenue opportunities,” says Sato. “Carriers need to understand their networks from the edge to the core. They need the right amount of bandwidth in the right spots. And they need to generate revenue by offering new and exciting services like enhanced SLAs and VPNs that can be supported and managed with robust network monitoring. The AU1500 is a critical piece of the carrier toolset to make these unmet needs a reality.”

The AU1500 IP Core Network Probe and AU1500 MPLS upgrade are currently in the final stage of customer network trials. The MPLS enhancement for the AU1500 can be obtained as a software license upgrade to the AU1500 AOS version 1.4.0.0 and higher. Both will be available in June 2002.

Breakthrough Leadership with Emotional Intelligence for Vital & Successful Businesses, Schools, and Communities: WorldÂ’s Premier EQ Conference in Europe for First Time

Breakthrough Leadership with Emotional Intelligence for Vital & Successful Businesses, Schools, and Communities: WorldÂ’s Premier EQ Conference in Europe for First Time

The premier world conference on emotional intelligence, NexusEQ offers top speakers in a highly effective forum. Leaders in business, education, and community access best practices and the latest research to create vitality and sustainable success. Next conference is June 12-14, 2005, in Holland.

(PRWEB) March 31, 2005

Since the 1995 publication of Daniel Goleman’s international bestseller Emotional Intelligence, Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, a global movement has developed to bring “EQ” into practice in businesses, schools, and communities around the globe.

Goleman and other leaders in the field will share best practices and current research at the 5th annual NexusEQ Conference, June 12-14 in Holland (http://www. nexuseq. com (http://www. nexuseq. com)). Titled “Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Tools and Wisdom for a Sustainable World” and featuring speakers from 19 countries, this is the most comprehensive EQ world summit ever.

“This is a worldwide movement, but people are isolated,” Goleman explains. “To everyone who is laboring in solitary circumstances -- in a school, in a business, in a hospital, a university, where ever you may be: You are part of a community -- a virtual community of like minded people pursuing this important work. This chance to come together and meet others in your ‘family’ is enormously important.”

From American Express to Avon, businesses have begun to embrace the concept. Jack Welch has begun discussing EQ (Wall Street Journal, 1/23/04), and the Harvard Business Review calls it “the key to professional success” (April 2003). Schools, hospitals, and government agencies world-wide are adopting EQ practices. From elementary school students to army officers, a curriculum of emotional awareness is providing a new perspective on people.

What makes emotional intelligence so appealing? Partly because it answers a widespread longing to understand the complexities of human interaction. Partly because it allows practitioners to bring compassion, empathy, and wisdom to schools and organizations. And partly because emotional intelligence delivers impressive bottom-line results (see business case examples on http://www. EQperformance. com (http://www. EQperformance. com) and http://www. NexusEQ. com (http://www. NexusEQ. com)).

According to Goleman, one key benefit is that “emotional intelligence can help people make better decisions.” This increased effectiveness is invaluable for business, essential for education, and transformational for personal life.

The conference highlights the growing international interest in this work. Part laboratory science, part popular psychology, the “EQ Movement” continues to gain ground. Business, education, healthcare and the public will come together to see the progress at NexusEQ in Holland, June 12-14, 2005. Information and registration is online http://www. ASPCA Appoints Animal Fighting Specialist Terry Mills to Combat Blood Sports in U. S

ASPCA Appoints Animal Fighting Specialist Terry Mills to Combat Blood Sports in U. S.

New Research Supports Need to Tackle Cruel, Illegal Practice of Animal Fighting

New York, NY (Vocus) December 13, 2010

The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) announces the appointment of Terry Mills as Animal Fighting Specialist to provide training to law enforcement officials and investigate blood sports, such as dog fighting and cockfighting, across the country. Mills will collaborate with law enforcement and other agencies to spearhead investigations involving blood sports as part of the ASPCA’s Field Investigation and Response team.

According to a recent blood sports poll conducted by the ASPCA, one in every 10 Americans suspects that someone they know is involved in organized animal fighting, a notable statistic considering that animal fighting is an underground, illegal activity. Additionally, the survey reveals that more than half—51 percent—of respondents are aware of the connection between organized animal fighting and other serious crimes, and 81 percent of the general population say that more resources are necessary to stop animal fighting, particularly training for law enforcement.

“As the public learns more about this issue, the ASPCA is being called to respond to more blood sports investigations than ever before,” said Tim Rickey, senior director of ASPCA Field Investigations and Response. “Terry’s background will be a vital resource in training law enforcement to combat this cruel form of animal abuse.”

Mills is widely known in the animal welfare community for his work with the Missouri State Highway Patrol on the federal dog fighting raid in 2009, which covered eight states and resulted in 26 arrests and the seizure of more than 400 dogs. Prior to the raid, he spent 18 months as an undercover officer, gaining access to the underground world of organized dog fighting and collecting extensive evidence. His efforts ultimately helped eliminate one of the largest dog fighting operations in U. S. history and resulted in federal indictments in six districts and state charges in nearly a dozen counties in Missouri. Mills received the ASPCA’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award in October 2009.

Prior to joining the ASPCA, Mills spent more than 30 years with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, where he investigated major crimes and participated in undercover operations involving narcotics, terrorism, and gang-related activities. His background in undercover work helped him infiltrate an outlaw motorcycle gang and various drug organizations throughout the United States.

“Often times, drugs, weapons, and other illegal activities are linked to organized animal fighting,” added Rickey. “Although animal fighting is illegal, people continue to participate in this brutal sport. The ASPCA created the blood sports unit not just to rescue animal victims, but also to help prevent other serious crimes. Terry’s background will undoubtedly help the ASPCA protect both animals and people.”

The ASPCA’s Field Investigation and Response team responds to large-scale animal cruelty operations and natural disasters and in 2010 investigated nearly 120 cases including dog fighting incidents and one of Florida’s largest cockfighting seizures of 650 fighting roosters.

Local Chiropractic Marketing Expert Helps Doctors Flood Their Practices with New Patients

Local Chiropractic Marketing Expert Helps Doctors Flood Their Practices with New Patients

Through local chiropractic marketing on the internet, consultant Dr. Matthew Loop has been helping doctors get an extra 10-20 new patients per month for their chiropractic practices without spending money on advertising. He proudly and passionately serves this industry through his innovative website DCincome. com

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 29, 2010

Internet marketing consultant and mentor, Dr. Matthew Loop, is providing much needed local marketing services to an underserved constituency -- chiropractors. Loop, who is a chiropractor, knows first-hand the challenges that these healthcare professionals face. For Loop, the key to success for any skilled chiropractor is the ability to engage the internet in local chiropractic marketing. It's been his experience that this is an avenue that many chiropractors overlook or have little experience in, yet the web can bring doctors a flood of new patients if harnessed correctly.

"The thing is," said Loop from his office in Atlanta, "Chiropractors, like any healthcare professional, are dealing with paperwork, bureaucracy and bookkeeping issues while serving the public. The profession is time-consuming and leaves little time for doctors to increase the number of patients who come to them. That's why I created DCincome. com. Through this website I offer an informative blog and various products / services that allow individuals to utilize local chiropractic marketing (http://DCincome. com) strategies that have been proven to work across the internet."

As an internet marketing consultant and veteran, Loop works with clients teaching them how to use some of the most powerful advertising mediums society has ever known. His services focus on Web 2.0, social networking and the use of various forms of social media and methods designed to create mass online exposure, local market domination, and celebrity status. The end result being more new patients for doctors and substantial increases in income.

When asked about Web 2.0 and its importance, Loop replied, "Web 2.0 is the 'new' internet. For the first decade, the internet was known as a place where you could quickly find information and where people could sell things. And, although the web is still used in that manner, Web 2.0 focuses on the internet as a social networking platform, where people create connections, share information and resources." He noted, "A large part of marketing on the net, including local chiropractic marketing (http://www. DCincome. com), has nothing to do with the sales pitch and everything to do with becoming a trusted resource for information and for developing a community of people with the same interests."

Although the Internet is world-wide, it may be utilized effectively through search engines like Google and Yahoo and sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to create an effective, dynamic presence for local businesses. It has surpassed all other forms of information distribution to become the primary source for those seeking any type of information. This single source is what Loop teaches chiropractors to utilize to its fullest.

For more information on DCincome. com and how local chiropractic marketing will benefit your practice go to http://DCincome. com/blog (http://DCincome. com/blog). Along with the blog, you'll find information on Web 2.0, social media and video marketing as well as information regarding Dr. Loop and his consulting services.

Best Friends Animal Society Celebrates National Feral Cat Day, Oct. 16, 2009

Best Friends Animal Society Celebrates National Feral Cat Day, Oct. 16, 2009

Best Friends Animal Society encourages people to use National Feral Cat Day on Oct. 16 as an opportunity to learn how they can be part of the solution to make life better for homeless cats.

(Vocus) October 12, 2009

Best Friends Animal Society encourages people to use National Feral Cat Day on Oct. 16 as an opportunity to learn how they can be part of the solution to make life better for homeless cats.

Started in 2001 by Alley Cat Allies, National Feral Cat Day has become "an effective way to highlight the issue of overpopulation of feral and stray cats, and the humane approaches to helping them," said Shelly Kotter, Focus on Felines campaign specialist for Best Friends Animal Society.

Kotter explained that Best Friends Animal Society believes that the needs of free-roaming cats and the issues surrounding them -- which exist in every community -- are best encapsulated in the term "community cats."

"There is no one description that fits all free-roaming cats," Kotter added. "These homeless cats are the result of a failure in the community -- unneutered housecats that wandered away from home, cats abandoned when the family moved, or cats that have never been socialized to people in the first place. None of these cats would be on the streets if people had spayed or neutered their pets and kept their cats safe."

Kotter outlined some simple steps to help homeless cats:
"You can get involved as much, or as little as your schedule and budget permit. Don't underestimate what seems like a small contribution to the cause: many people doing little things add up to major accomplishments," she said.
If you feed stray cats, spay and neuter them so that the breeding cycle is stopped. Keep your own cats from becoming statistics. Have them live in the home. Get them spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you want your cat to have outside experiences, please consider screening-in a porch or patio, building a cattery, investing in special cat fencing, and/or teaching your cat to walk on a harness. Support your local community trap/neuter/return (TNR) groups. Donate -- even small amounts add up. Volunteer a couple of hours a month. Become a caregiver for a local cat colony. Foster adoptable kittens or lost housecats rescued during TNR operations.

"Best Friends believes the solutions for these cats rest with the community as well. Through a variety of strategies, people have the power to help the cats lead a humane life as well as reducing the number of cats who are eking out an existence on the streets," Kotter said.

"We like to think that every day is 'community cat day.' We are working with communities across the country on innovative and proactive programs to help lessen the numbers of feral and stray cats euthanized in shelters.

"Through our work, several rural Iowa communities have embraced TNR programs, fostering and re-homing kittens and tame cats rescued from colonies. If the cats are in a place where they are at risk, the people in these towns follow strict relocation protocols to provide the cats a new home," Kotter said.

Other successful components of Best Friends Focus on Felines program includes:

Four Directions Community Cat Program (southern Utah)

This unique program works with more than 38 urban and rural communities in southern Utah. Best Friends' clinic as well as five veterinary clinics around southern Utah participate in this low cost spay/neuter program. The program has six new relocation colonies that re-home feral cats that otherwise would have been euthanized.

FixNation (Los Angeles)
Best Friends works in Los Angeles with FixNation, a nonprofit clinic that cares mainly for feral and stray cats but also operates as a low cost spay/neuter clinic. The first of its kind in the United States, the ground-breaking clinic leads the way as a model for community cat clinics around the country. The clinic works with local groups and individuals to battle cat overpopulation, providing free spay/neuter services for feral and stray cats, as well as shots and health checks. In addition, FixNation and Best Friends work together to lower the shelter euthanasia rates in East Valley, an impoverished area of Los Angeles. The program targets East Valley residents, offering TNR as an alternative to trap and kill. In the first year of the program, estimates are that East Valley shelter cat intake statistics will be reduced by five percent.

First Coast No More Homeless Pets (Jacksonville, Florida)

The killing of community cats has ended in Jacksonville.

The Feral Freedom Program is a collaboration between the city of Jacksonville, First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP), the Jacksonville Humane Society and Best Friends Animal Society. Cats who arrive at the shelter in traps are turned over to FCNMHP to be spayed/neutered, then returned to their original trap location. Other communities are adopting this program as a way to save lives and taxpayer dollars.

No More Homeless Pets (northern Utah)
NMHP Utah and Best Friends work together with local governments to improve the shelter systems in northern Utah using tax dollars to combat the over population of community cats.

About Best Friends Animal Society:

Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit, membership organization building no-kill programs and partnerships that will bring about a day when there are No More Homeless Pets®. The society's leading initiatives in animal care and community programs are coordinated from its Kanab, Utah, headquarters, the country's largest no-kill sanctuary. This work is made possible by the personal and financial support of a grassroots network of members and community partners across the nation. In 2009, Best Friends celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Flu Shot or Not? Author/Physician Reveals 5 Essential Ways to Protect Yourself

Flu Shot or Not? Author/Physician Reveals 5 Essential Ways to Protect Yourself

Author documents "The Top 5 Ways to Protect Yourself if You Can’t Get a Flu Shot” during a guest appearance on a www. MyTrainer. com telephone seminar

Maplewood, NJ (PRWEB) January 20, 2005

While the American government has increased supplies of flu vaccine doses, millions of Americans are looking at alternatives if they can’t get a flu shot (http://www. MyTrainer. com/flu). According to Joel Fuhrman, M. D., there are certain steps people can take to – if not “flu-proof” themselves entirely – significantly reduce their chances of experiencing any flu symptom (http://www. MyTrainer. com/flu).

“Most people think that getting the flu is a direct and inevitable result of coming into contact with the flu virus or someone with a flu symptom (http://www. MyTrainer. com/flu),” Fuhrman notes. “But if that were true, then everyone who breathed in a flu germ would get sick. That’s obviously not the case. There are other factors that determine whether an individual who ingests the flu virus will develop a flu symptom and become sick. Most of these are in our direct control – and they’re actually more effective than a flu shot.”

Dr. Fuhrman, author of several books, including "Eat to Live, Fasting and Eating for Health" and the soon-to-be-released "Disease-Proof Your Children" is a board-certified family physician who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods.

Dr. Fuhrman shared his findings on “The Top 5 Ways to Protect Yourself and Your Family from the Flu Even if You Can’t Get a Flu Shot” during a special guest appearance on a www. MyTrainer. com telephone seminar.

John Allen Mollenhauer (http://www. my-trainer. com/johnallen/), founder of www. MyTrainer. com, interviewed Dr. Fuhrman on five specific nutritional strategies that are more effective than a flu shot and help a personÂ’s immune system resist the flu virus.

John Allen added, “It’s important that with all the media hype about this topic, to highlight the insights of Dr. Fuhrman, a true giant in the field of evidence-based, preventive medicine. I encourage as many people as possible to get this advice before the flu season hits. We recorded this session and posted it on our public website for anyone to hear or download. We also posted the transcript for easy reference.”

To listen to the flu shot interview (http://www. MyTrainer. com/flutalk) or read the transcript free, go to www. MyTrainer. com/flu (http://www. Caffeinated Kids

Caffeinated Kids

What will the future look like for this "buzzed" generation?

Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 24, 2007

The caffeine consumption of America's teenagers has risen steadily in recent years, spurred by a variety of social, cultural, and market drivers. Both their rising caffeine consumption and their choice of the coffee shop as a favorite hangout will likely shape the lives of today's teens as they mature as social beings and as consumers.

That is the forecast of "Caffeinated Kids: A Buzzed Generation," a recent report by the futurist consulting firm Social Technologies.

"A 2007 study found a 12% increase in both coffee and iced-tea servings at commercial food service outlets since 2001--with double-digit increases among consumers under age 18," explains Social Technologies analyst Kevin Osborn, author of the report. "This growth in caffeine consumption--and the rise of coffee drinking as an adolescent social activity--may lead to a number of different outcomes. Some are relatively benign, of course, but others may be cause for concern."

Potential outcomes
Osborn suggests that many of the teens who grow up drinking coffee will likely be coffee drinkers for life. "Indeed, the number of young adults who continue to drink coffee daily is already on the rise," he shares, noting that according to the National Coffee Association, the number of 18- to 24-year olds who say they drink coffee nearly doubled between 2003 (16%) and 2006 (31%).
Many teens will also likely remain loyal to Starbucks or other brands of coffee they now drink well into adulthood.

However, Osborn points out that caffeine can lead to a variety of health problems.

"The stimulating effects of caffeine--which include a boost in both heart rate and blood pressure--can be more drastic for young bodies due to their smaller size," Osborn says, referencing a 2006 research study in Chicago that reported an increase in caffeine-abuse cases over the previous three years. According to the study, 12% of the cases required hospital treatment. The average age of the patients was 21.

"The introduction of elevated amounts of caffeine at young ages, and continued into adulthood, may result in future cardiovascular problems for the Millennial generation," he notes. "Since too much caffeine can interfere with calcium absorption, doctors and nutritionists also worry about the bone health of our youths. And since teens have developed the habit of guzzling sweetened, calorie-laden coffee drinks, there is concern that this will only add to the growing problem of obesity among both children and adults."

Business implications
Although a backlash against caffeinating kids is already underway, bans on coffee and energy-drink sales to teens seems unlikely in the US, Osborn forecasts.

However, "to counter any potential backlash, regulators might begin monitoring caffeine content, and beverage manufacturers and confectioners could consider voluntarily disclosing their caffeine content on product labels as a way to forestall regulation," Osborn suggests.
"Some industries may benefit from the trend. The pharmaceutical industry, for one, may see growth in the market for blood pressure medication as coffee-quaffing teens move into adulthood."

The social patterns established by today's teens will also likely persist into their adulthood.
"The teens and tweens currently hanging out at Starbucks and other coffee bars," Osborn suggests, "will continue to look for comfortable, hassle-free, time-fluid hangouts well into their adulthood."

With FAMILY FLEX plans you can customize your family coverage and get the protection you need at a price you can afford. You get to pick and choose the plans you need. You can select a higher deductible, lower premium plan for the member of your family who may need only basic health care insurance coverage. At the same time you may want a plan with a lower deductible and higher premium for a family member with more health care needs. You can get health insurance for yourself and kids or you can get Dental insurance for the kids, and life insurance for the you or the kids.

(PRWEB) September 30, 2004

Most of Unicare Insurance plans offer the flexibility of choosing your own Doctor, but you can save money by using the independently contracted doctors and medical facilities that are part of UNICARE'S network. When you use one of these contracted network doctors that have agreed to accept lower 'negotiated' rates for services, you pay a lower percentage of the provider's rate. Also, the in-network providers who accept our 'negotiated' rates would make more customer savings by paying a lower percentage of the lower 'negotiated' rate. Before you choose your Doctor check the provider finder on the Unicare web site at www. unicare. com. The final financial safety net applies to the $5,000,000 per member per lifetime maximum in benefits. There are many different options for your family and you can get the break downs from the Policy Store by calling toll-free 866-526-9669, or send an e-mail: terry@policystore. com

Minnesota Massage Pioneer Sister Rosalind Gefre Announces New Family Caregiver Programs to Relieve Caregiver Burden

Minnesota Massage Pioneer Sister Rosalind Gefre Announces New Family Caregiver Programs to Relieve Caregiver Burden

Minnesota-based massage pioneer Sister Rosalind Gefre has launched Sister Rosalind's Family Caregiver Programs to relieve "caregiver burden" for family caregivers of the chronically ill. These programs will include weekend retreats featuring massage, aromatherapy, education and support. Over 50 million people now provide care for a family member or friend during any given year, and that number is expected to grow. The stress from caregiving has resulted in higher rates of depression, divorce and death among caregivers.

St. Paul, MN (PRWEB) August 23, 2007

Minnesota-based massage pioneer Sister Rosalind Gefre has announced the launching of her new programs to relieve "caregiver burden" for family caregivers.

Sister Rosalind's Family Caregiver Programs will feature massage, aromatherapy, relaxation and education during weekend retreats in a peaceful natural setting. Guest speakers will give presentations about caregiving issues and advice about self-care. There will also be the opportunity for spiritual fellowship and group discussion.

Caregivers may choose from two separate retreats to be held in Fall 2007, from Friday through Sunday, either October 12-14 or November 30 - December 2. Both retreats, which are open to the public, will take place at the Riverwood Conference Center in Monticello, Minnesota, located 35 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Other retreats are also planned for the future.

Since 1983, Sister Rosalind has been serving the community with therapeutic massage through her "Massage Ministry". In the same spirit of serving the community, she is now turning her focus to the increasing number of family caregivers who are undergoing extraordinary stress from the competing demands of work, family and caregiving. This stress has resulted in emotional, physical and financial hardships and higher rates of depression, divorce and death among caregivers.

According to the Center for Disease Control estimates, 90 million Americans live with chronic illness. The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion states that at least 25 million people have chronic, disabling conditions. The National Family Caregivers Association reports that more than 50 million people provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year. And John Hopkins University research predicts by the year 2030, nearly 150 million Americans will have some type of chronic illness.

For over two decades Sister Rosalind and her massage students and therapists have generously donated tens of thousands of hours of free massage therapy to the community. Sister Rosalind has built a large massage ministry through her Sister Rosalind's Schools and Clinics of Massage - (www. sisterrosalind. org) - with five professional schools and seven wellness centers and clinics in Minnesota and North Dakota. To date, more than 10,000 people have attended schools bearing her name. Her biography, "Hands That Touch, Hands That Heal", (available at Amazon. com) documents her remarkable contribution to the popularization of massage in the past 20 years, in spite of formidable obstacles.

Sister Rosalind says:
"It has been my dream for many years to create programs where people can experience the healing of the body and mind in a beautiful and peaceful natural setting. Sister Rosalind Caregiver Programs are dedicated to supporting caregivers of those with chronic illness in a place where people can enjoy the healing power of nature and seek regeneration of body and soul."

For more information, including the cost of attending the retreats, visit the Web site at www. caregiverprograms. org. Inquiries are welcome about possible scholarship funds to attend the retreats, as well as possible reimbursement for respite care through cooperating nonprofits such as the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Minnesota. To volunteer and/ or to make a tax-deductible contribution to help support a family caregiver to attend a retreat, contact Peter Fahnlander at Sister Rosalind Schools and Clinics of Massage at 651-554-3013.

Active Power Selected by Nestlé Waters Algeria

Active Power Selected by Nestlé Waters Algeria

Green UPS system to provide critical backup power to mineral water production facility.

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) July 11, 2007

Active Power, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACPW), inventor and manufacturer of the most energy-efficient critical power systems in the world, recently shipped one of its integrated flywheel-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems against an order received from Nestle Waters Algeria. Located in the city of Blida, Algeria, Nestlé Waters Algeria is one of the main producers of mineral water in the region. The facility ordered Active Power's CleanSource® UPS 250 kVA, two 1,000 kVA transformers, switchgear and GenStart™, which delivers redundant starting power for generators, significantly increasing system availability.

"Reliability coupled with new technologies played a crucial role in our selection of a UPS system," said the project manager of Nestlé Waters Algeria. "We were in search of a field proven backup power system that can operate seamlessly in environments with challenges presented by power grid fluctuations. The energy efficiency and reliability of Active Power's flywheel-based UPS system impressed us the most."

Active Power engineers will assist Nestlé Waters Algeria in designing the layout for proper placement of the CleanSource UPS and transformers. Installation of the entire system is scheduled to begin at the end of July.

"The fact a Texas-based UPS manufacturer competed against two leading European based UPS providers for the Nestlé Waters Algeria contract and won speaks volumes about Active Power's flywheel-based technology," said Jim Murphy, vice president of Sales, EMEA and APAC for Active Power. "Our field proven UPS systems provide inherent reliability to customers working in challenging physical environments. Active Power has deployed more than 1,600 flywheels in UPS system installations in more than 40 countries around the world."

Nestlé Waters is the world leader in bottled water with a presence in 130 countries. Nestlé Waters Algeria plays a significant role in Nestlé Water's development strategy for Africa and the Middle East. Bottled water consumption is particularly high in Algeria and North Africa with an annual consumption of more than 16 litres of bottled water per person at the end of 2004. There are approximately 32 million people in Algeria.

BodyBolster Presents Innovative 47 Exercises to Manage Aging

BodyBolster Presents Innovative 47 Exercises to Manage Aging

The BodyBolster™, an innovative tool for better health, presents 47 exercises to fight and prevent deteriorating posture as an inevitable part of aging.

Australia (PRWEB) February 2, 2010

The BodyBolster (http://syndacast. com/go/BodyBolster)™, an innovative tool for better health, presents 47 exercises to fight and prevent deteriorating posture as an inevitable part of aging.

Flavia Abbate, CEO of Bolster Trading begins, "It's a well accepted fact that as you age you need to pay more attention to your skin, your hair, your teeth and managing that little bit of extra weight. But equally as important is posture. Posture can add or subtract up to ten years to how you look."

"Add to that decreasing flexibility and limited range of motion, and not only do you look aged but you feel old."

Today we lead a sedentary lifestyle more than ever before so it is inevitable that our bodies will be strained from sitting for prolonged periods. This has serious implications - our muscles weaken, our ligaments shorten, our spine calcifies, our organs and systems (nervous, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, etc) fail to work efficiently. So to counter the ill effects of our lifestyle we need to perform specific daily stretches that strengthen our structure.

The BodyBolster™ can help to prevent and manage poor posture (http://syndacast. com/go/BodyBolster), increase flexibility and improve range of motion so you feel strong, stay looking younger and perform everyday tasks (like carrying the groceries) without the strained back.

The unique texture (firm yet malleable) is designed to give gentle feedback to the nervous system to invite a sense of letting go - allowing movement rather than forcing it. The idea of heightened sensory awareness is based on mind-body principles of learning such as in Pilates, Yoga and Feldenkrais

The BodyBolster™ is self-inflating - with the turn of the valve, and deflates with a squeeze. Providing an all-in-one very affordable, versatile, portable, effective back support and exercise tool, the BodyBolster™ helps people with back pain to stretch, release muscle tension, stiffness, aches and pain - even in the sitting position.

The BodyBolster™ comes with a free user guide DVD demonstrating 47 exercises to increase range of movement, improve flexibility and build core strength. More information about the BodyBolster™ available at "www. bodybolster. com" (http://syndacast. com/go/BodyBolster)

Northern Virginia Breast Enhancement Patients Opt for Younger Look

Northern Virginia Breast Enhancement Patients Opt for Younger Look

More breast enhancement patients are seeking plastic surgery techniques in Virginia that promise a dramatically younger look. Board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Andrew Goldberg and Dr. Mitchel Krieger highlight the top options for "age-defying" breast enhancement.

Fairfax, VA (PRWEB) August 23, 2009

Women have chosen breast augmentation in Virginia to enhance their breast volume for years, but for many women the focus is shifting away from "standard" procedures and toward more complex options that focus specifically on creating a more youthful look. Dr. Andrew Goldberg and Dr. Mitchel Krieger (www. virginiaplasticsurgery. com) explain the reasons so many women are choosing dual breast lift and breast augmentation procedures for a more comprehensive change.

"Lately, we've been hearing a lot more questions from patients who want to know why their breasts look 'old,' and what they can do to get a more slender, perky look that makes their body look younger," Dr. Krieger explains. "For some patients that means a 'younger' look means pairing a breast augmentation in Virginia with liposuction, tummy tuck, or breast lift, but in any case the demand for this kind of procedure is definitely growing."

While the "typical" lists of aging signs tend to focus more on facial features and skin quality, for many women considering plastic surgery in Virginia, sagging breasts take priority because they can so dramatically influence how feminine and attractive a woman looks and feels. Even women who are young and healthy can experience this problem due to genetics, pregnancy, significant weight loss, or simply due to gravity and time, and for younger patients especially breast procedures offer a chance to look and feel closer to their real age.

"Because of this focus on a younger shape, many more of our patients are having a breast lift to reverse some of the premature signs of aging early on," notes Dr. Goldberg. "Women are discovering that they can still take advantage of breast enhancement procedures even if their goal is only a smaller-scale adjustment."

A breast lift can be performed alone or in conjunction with another breast enhancement procedure such as breast augmentation, and typically involves removal of tissues either below or just above the areola to tighten the breasts and shift them upward.

"These procedures have to be customized very precisely to the needs of the patient - they are definitely not 'one size fits all' options," notes Dr. Krieger. "In the past, fewer surgeons performed breast lift with augmentation because of the extra level of skill these procedures required. At our practice, we offer a full range of options and strive to deliver results that are impressive - not only visually, but also in terms of how vibrant a patient feels. And in the end, it's that goal that matters the most."

Dr. Andrew Goldberg and Dr. Mitchel Krieger (www. virginiaplasticsurgery. com) are board-certified plastic surgeons serving cosmetic surgery patients in Fairfax County, Virginia and the surrounding areas. Dr. Andrew Goldberg received his medical doctorate from the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey and has been performing plastic surgery in Virginia since 1991. He specializes in aesthetic and complex reconstructive surgical procedures, including breast and body contouring. Dr. Mitchel Krieger earned his medical degree at Albany Medical College, and completed his internship and general surgery residency in San Francisco. He specializes in aesthetic surgery and has co-authored a book on post-bariatric plastic surgery.

WWF: Oil Giant Plans New Platform Near Feeding Ground Of Critically Endangered Gray Whale

WWF: Oil Giant Plans New Platform Near Feeding Ground Of Critically Endangered Gray Whale

Platform’s construction could threaten future of sub-species

Washington, D. C. (Vocus/PRWEB) January 17, 2011

Sakhalin Energy Investment Company – part owned by Shell – has announced plans to build a major oil platform near crucial feeding habitat of the Western North Pacific gray whale population in the Russian Far East.

Only around 130 whales of the critically endangered Western population exist today, and their primary feeding habitat – off Sakhalin Island – is already besieged by multiple oil and gas exploration and development projects.

The construction and operation of an additional offshore platform could have numerous negative impacts on the whales, potentially disrupting feeding behaviors and increasing the chance of fatal ship strikes. Also, a third platform heightens the risk of an environmentally catastrophic oil spill in this sensitive habitat.

“Just around 30 female western gray whales of breeding age remain – the population is already on the brink of disappearing forever,” said Aleksey Knizhnikov, Oil & Gas Environmental Policy Officer for World Wildlife Fund-Russia (WWF-Russia). “The loss of even a few breeding females could mean the end for the population.”

Gray whales live on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. However IUCN classes the critically endangered Western population as separate from the Eastern population, as genetic studies indicate that the two populations probably do not mix.

The Western population of North Pacific gray whales depends on the waters off Sakhalin Island for their survival. During feeding season the whales must consume enough for the rest of the year, when they migrate great distances to their breeding grounds. Their primary feeding area, near the proposed platform, is doubly important as the shallow waters are one of the only places where mother whales can teach their calves to feed on the sea bed.

Sakhalin Energy already has two platforms in the area, and said previously that drilling technology advances eliminated the need for a third. The company acknowledges that having two rather than three platforms “significantly reduces the potential for environmental impact,” according to an official Sakhalin Energy document. Moreover, Sakhalin Energy studies from ten years ago show that the area being proposed for the third platform is unsuitable due to unstable clay at the seabed in the earthquake-prone area.

“We are astonished by the announcement from Sakhalin Energy that it intends to build a third platform,” said Wendy Elliott, Species Program Manager, WWF-International. “The company’s own detailed assessments concluded previously that two platforms would be preferable, both for environmental reasons and for the efficiency of the operation.”

The company plans to conduct a seismic survey in the summer of 2011 to determine where to begin platform construction. The surveys are used to detect oil deposits under the ocean bed and involve shooting loud pulses of noise into the ocean floor.

Three seismic surveys were conducted around whale feeding habitat last summer causing severe pressure on the animals. Noise from the surveys can be devastating for species such as gray whales that rely on sound to navigate, communicate and find their food.

“We still do not know how badly the whales were affected by major seismic activity last summer – and will not know until the whales return to their feeding grounds again this year and scientists can determine if any are malnourished. It is totally inappropriate for Sakhalin Energy to plan another seismic survey in 2011 before we have the opportunity to examine the health of the animals,” said Doug Norlen, Policy Director at Pacific Environment.

Assessments of the impact of Sakhalin Energy’s operations on Western gray whales are routinely made by a panel of independent experts – the Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel (WGWAP). However the panel’s assessment and subsequent advice has been based on the operation of two, not three platforms. The proposal for a third platform calls into question whether all previous recommendations from WGWAP and regulatory approvals from the Russian government need to be re-evaluated.

“IFAW has been involved in and supported regular annual monitoring of the WGW at their feeding grounds at Sakhalin Island since 2000,” said Masha Vorontsova, Director of IFAW Russia. “We are deeply concerned by the plans of Sakhalin Energy to install the third platform in this area, which is a critical habitat for the survival of the Western gray whale. IFAW will continue its regular monitoring of the Western gray whale feeding grounds, and activities of the oil companies at the area through summer 2011 to ensure that there are no violations of the existing regulations, which would negatively impact the Western gray whale.”

Editor’s notes:
An NGO statement outlining why the platform should not go ahead is available on http://www. panda. org  The Sakhalin Energy document stating that two rather than three platforms “significantly reduces the potential for environmental impact” is available online at http://www. sakhalinenergy. ru/en/documents/doc_32_pab. pdf
